Philadelphia’s defense once soared like a bald eagle over the Rocky Mountains—untouchable, fierce, legendary. But the NFL’s offseason is a fickle beast, shaking rosters like autumn leaves in a Nor’easter. When the Eagles traded C.J. Gardner-Johnson to Houston, it wasn’t just a transaction. It was a tremor.

A puzzle piece ripped from a Super Bowl tapestry. Now, the City of Brotherly Love holds its breath, wondering: Who fills the void left by a warrior’s exit? Remember 2017? The “Philly Special” underdog magic? Or Reggie White bulldozing quarterbacks like freight trains?

Defense has always been Philadelphia’s heartbeat. But time marches. Dawk’s hits fade into highlight reels. Now, the Eagles face a new crossroads. And there enters Julian Blackmon—a name whispered in scouting circles, a shadow darting across the Colts’ film. Could he be the next chapter in Philly’s defensive saga?

Blackmon: The Chess Piece in Fangio’s Symphony

The C.J. Gardner-Johnson trade left a crater in Philadelphia’s secondary. But Vic Fangio, the Eagles’ defensive maestro, thrives on reinvention. Julian Blackmon isn’t just a safety; he’s a Swiss Army knife. Slot coverage? Check. Ball-hawking free safety? Check. At 26, he’s a blend of youth and grit—a perfect fit for Fangio’s labyrinthine schemes.

“He could be a proverbial chess piece in Vic Fangio's defense, used specifically in advantageous coverage matchups,” says Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox. Imagine Blackmon lurking in the shadows, waiting to pounce like a linebacker in a 1980s Bears highlight reel. Meanwhile, Blackmon’s stats sing a siren song.

174 tackles, 7 interceptions, and 12 pass deflections over two seasons. For a defense craving versatility, he’s a triple-shot espresso. But here’s the kick—he’s affordable. At $5 million for a one−year “prove−it” deal, he’s a low−risk, high−reward gamble. The Eagles love bargains. Remember Nick Foles’ 1.5 million comeback tour? Yet, Blackmon isn’t flawless.

His run defense? Spotty. But in Philly, where Fletcher Cox and Jordan Davis eat double-teams for breakfast, weaknesses get camouflaged. Picture Blackmon roaming center field like Derek Jeter, snagging errant passes while the trenches roar. So why hasn’t Indy locked him down?

The Colts splurged on Charvarius Ward and Camryn Bynum, leaving Blackmon adrift. Philadelphia’s gain? Maybe. But the Eagles’ front office moves like a silent storm. Quiet. Calculated. Unrelenting.

C.J. Gardner-Johnson Trade: Swifties Sing, Philly Breathes Fire

The C.J. Gardner-Johnson trade wasn’t just about cap space or draft picks. It was a breakup. A love affair cut short. Gardner-Johnson’s swagger—part Deion Sanders, part WWE heel—made him a cult hero. Six interceptions, 59 tackles, and a Super Bowl ring? Irreplaceable. But Philadelphia’s front office plays the long game.

Enters the Swifties. When Gardner-Johnson trolled Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift with a parade hoodie reading “Swifties can LIX my balls,” he ignited a fanbase fiercer than a Texas wildfire. After the trade, Swifties flooded social media like a Nashville honky-tonk at midnight. “Karma is a guy not on the Eagles any more,” one tweeted. Another crowed: “He’ll never sniff a Super Bowl again.” For Philly fans?

Mixed emotions. Gardner-Johnson’s edge was electric—but his antics? A double-edged sword. The Eagles’ return? Kenyon Green, a 23-year-old guard with first-round pedigree and a $2.9 million salary. It’s a classic Howie Roseman move—buy low, develop quietly. Remember when Jason Peters arrived as a tight end project? Green could be the next Lane Johnson. Or another cautionary tale.

Meanwhile, Houston gains a playmaker. Gardner-Johnson’s Instagram farewell dripped with pride: “This decision wasn't mine, but I walk away proud of what we built together.” Philly’s response? A shrug and a nod. This city thrives on underdogs. Always has. From Rocky’s steps to T.O.’s sit-ups, drama fuels the engine.

Philadelphia’s defense stands at a crossroads. Julian Blackmon offers youth and versatility. The C.J. Gardner-Johnson trade leaves a void—and a lesson. In the NFL, loyalty is fleeting. Legends rise and fall like autumn leaves. But the Eagles? They adapt. They evolve. Whether Blackmon dons midnight green or another star fades into memory, one truth remains: In Philly, every loss sparks a new beginning. And every beginning? It’s poetry in motion.

According to several reports, Diggs is a top 5 free agent who is shockingly still on the market but at the same time, many teams are hesitant to take a risk on him. Originally selected in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL Draft, the former Maryland product became one of the best receivers coming out that year before injuries have been slowing him down lately. Diggs will be coming off a season-ending injury which held him for the rest of the 2024 campaign if he signs with a team so suitors will be taking on a gamble if they sign him.

Even though he had a slow one-year season with the Texans, he put up six straight 1,000-yard seasons with the Vikings and Bills in his prime. It was shocking that the Bills made the move to trade him last offseason but it's looking like they won the deal before injuries were starting to kick in. Despite the injuries, he's already a capable wide receiver and while he won't be in a starting role anymore, the wideout could fight for the WR2 spot. Diggs has been explosive to create some space and be a lane switcher, especially in his Minneapolis Miracle play so he could earn at least a one-year prove-it deal.

Former Receptions Leader Stefon Diggs Still Available in Free Agency - He Should Sign in Coming Days

Possible Next Teams

Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys were "very in the mix" of acquiring wide receiver Cooper Kupp. However, he's heading to Seattle so the team will look at other options. This means the Cowboys are looking for a new wideout to pair with star CeeDee Lamb. Diggs is the perfect man in the Cowboys' scenario since he could come a cost-effective bargain the team is searching for. The veteran will be effective as long as he can stay healthy and reuniting with his brother Trevon Diggs could rejuvenate his love for the game again.

Los Angeles Chargers

The Los Angeles Chargers are finally getting some help in the wideout department after signing Mike Williams to a one-year deal. Ladd McConkey is still the only capable set of hands since it might take Williams a few games to adjust back in the Chargers offense. The team signing Diggs would allow them to move on from first-round draft Quentin Johnston who had two depleting NFL seasons. Diggs might not be the permanent solution but it gives the team another wideout to work with for an AFC Championship run.

New Orleans Saints

After losing Marquez Valdes-Scantling, the team has yet to address the wideout position other than adding a depth piece like Dante Pettis. Chris Olave could wind up requesting a trade or release if the Saints don't improve so the team should act quickly and sign a worthy wideout to take them to the playoffs. Diggs has the experience unlike Rashid Shaheed that can turn the passing game around for quarterback Derek Carr.

Breaking: First-Round Pick Signs Contract With Houston Texans https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/03/10/derek-barnett-signs-contract-houston-texans/ https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/03/10/derek-barnett-signs-contract-houston-texans/#respond Mon, 10 Mar 2025 17:19:47 +0000 https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/?p=216853 Eight-year veteran edge defender Derek Barnett has signed a new contract with the Houston Texans. Barnett, a former first-round pick and one-time Super Bowl champion, spent the 2024 season with the Houston Texans but has also played for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Derek Barnett, Houston Texans, Agree to Contract

The Houston Texans had one of the leagues deepest group of pass rushers in 2024, and Derek Barnett played a large role in that success. Appearing in 16 games, the edge defender finished the season with five sacks, 26 tackles, four tackles-for-loss, seven quarterback hits, and two forced fumbles. He also recovered two fumbles and returned both of them for touchdowns. With his help, Houston made the playoffs but ultimately fell to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Derek Barnett originally entered the league as a first-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. Selected by the Philadelphia Eagles, the Tennessee product spent most of his rookie season contributing in a situational role. Appearing in 15 games, Barnett finished his inaugural season with five sacks, 21 tackles, eight tackles-for-loss, and 16 quarterback hits. Philadelphia, of course, won the Super Bowl that season, defeating the New England Patriots to hoist their first Lombardi.

After an injury-plagued 2018, Barnett earned a full-time starting role in 2019. Playing up to his draft capital, the former first-round pick recorded 6.5 sacks, 30 tackles, 10 tackles-for-loss, and 22 quarterback hits.

Derek Barnett continued to be a solid, if unspectacular, starter and earned a two-year contract extension prior to the start of the 2022 season. Unfortunately, this backfired immediately, as the veteran tore his ACL in Week 1. While he returned in 2023, Barnett’s playing time dropped dramatically.

The Eagles ultimately chose to release the disgruntled playmaker midway through the 2023 season. Helping Houston win the AFC South with a rookie C.J. Stroud, Barnett recorded 2.5 sacks, 19 tackles, eight tackles-for-loss, and eight quarterback hits in six games with his new team.

BREAKING: Houston Texans Release $36 Million Star – 3 Suitors Emerge https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/03/07/breaking-houston-texans-release-shaq-mason-next-teams/ https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/03/07/breaking-houston-texans-release-shaq-mason-next-teams/#respond Fri, 07 Mar 2025 17:23:11 +0000 https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/?p=221207 After spending the past two seasons protecting quarterback C.J. Stroud, the Houston Texans have decided to release starting guard Shaq Mason. A fourth-round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, Mason used to be one of the league's premier blockers. A force in the run game, Mason helped the New England Patriots win two Super Bowls and was a fixture on the late 2010s Patriots.

While he's no longer an elite player, Mason remained a reliable starter for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2022 and the Texans in 2023 and 2024. Last year, the Georgia Tech product finished the season with a 60.5 PFF grade, the 44th-best mark out of 77 eligible players. However, his $14.5 million cap hit was too much for Houston, so they moved on shortly after acquiring wide receiver Christian Kirk.

Mason isn't worthy of an eight-digit salary at this stage in his career, but multiple teams should be interested in acquiring the 10-year veteran. After all, there aren't enough good offensive linemen to go around, and Mason is still a starting-caliber player. In no particular order, don't be surprised if these three teams pursue his services.

BREAKING: Houston Texans Release Shaq Mason - 3 Teams Could Sign Him

Possible Fits

New England Patriots

The Patriots traded Shaq Mason in 2022 and are still searching for his replacement. While Mike Onwenu is an above-average guard, New England desperately needs a left guard to protect franchise quarterback Drake Maye. Fourth-round pick Layden Robinson didn't do much to inspire confidence as a rookie, and Cole Strange cannot stay on the field and might be transitioning to center. Mason spent most of his career on the right side, but he should be able to learn left guard easily enough. Even though he never played under current head coach Mike Vrabel, there are enough leftovers from the Belichick organization in Foxboro who should be able to voucher for Mason's abilities.

New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints need help at just about every offensive line position. Quarterback Derek Carr is poised to return for another season, which means the team must improve the offensive line if they want their quarterback to survive a full 17-game season. Carr is one of the worst quarterbacks in the league when pressured, and the Saints must do something about their interior offensive line. Perhaps Shaq Mason isn't the player he once was, but the Texans guard could easily start for this team following his release.

Los Angeles Chargers

The Los Angeles Chargers have the game's best tackle duo in Rashawn Slater and 2024 first-round pick Joe Alt. Unfortunately, that didn't really matter due to the ineptitude of the interior offensive line. Zion Johnson isn't the worst guard in the league, but right guard Trey Pipkins was an active liability. The team can save $6.75 million by releasing him, and Mason is a far superior player even at his advanced age. With great tackles and reliable guards, the Chargers should be able to execute Jim Harbaugh's vision and dominate in the trenches.

Chiefs Projected To Sign Longtime Rival To New Contract – Other Suitors Involved https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/03/01/chiefs-projected-to-sign-free-agent-stefon-diggs/ https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/03/01/chiefs-projected-to-sign-free-agent-stefon-diggs/#respond Sat, 01 Mar 2025 18:00:32 +0000 https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/?p=220070 Wide receiver Stefon Diggs is one of the biggest names on the free agent market, and the former All-Pro could sign with a longtime rival in the offseason. Origianlly entering the league with the Minnesota Vikings, Diggs joined the Buffalo Bills in 2020 before joining the Houston Texans in 2024. In four of the past five seasons, Diggs' season ended at the hands of Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. Now set to reach unrestictred free agency, one prominent NFL insider believes the veteran could join his longtime rivals.

According to Bleacher Report's Moe Morton, Stefon Diggs is the ideal free agent for the Chiefs, as his injury will likely drive down his cost on the open market and the team could use a reliable set of hands for their inevitable postseason run.

"Coming off a significant injury, DIggs may be available on the free agent market at a discounted rate...The four-time Pro Bowler is an ideal fit for a team that doesn't need him at full strength early in the season but could use a boost down the stretch and in the playoffs."

Chiefs Projected to Sign Free Agent Stefon Diggs

It would be weird to see Stefon Diggs in a Chiefs uniform, but stranger free agent signings have happened. As alluded to above, Diggs tore his ACL in October and the 31-year-old may not be at full strength in Week 1. However, the Chiefs boast one of the best rosters in football and the regular season is something of a formality for them. They will make the playoffs, and they must be at their best when the postseason kicks off.

Due to his age and injury status, Stefon Diggs will not be the most popular name on the free agent market. However, he should draw some interest, and the Chiefs won't be the only team interested in signing the veteran. In no particular order, the following three teams could also make a push for his services.

Other Fits

Washington Commanders

The future is bright for the Washington Commanders. After making the NFC Championship Game with a rookie quarterback and first-year head coach, the team now has over $81 million in cap space to address their remaining needs and secure another Lombardi Trophy. Terry McLaurin is a great receiver who thrived with second-overall pick Jayden Daniels, but another reliable would make this offense all the more dangerous. Stefon Diggs won't break the bank as a free agent, which means Washington can use most of their money to address the secondary and offensive line.

Los Angeles Chargers

Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh believes in the power of the run game, but even the old-school head coach knows Justin Herbert needs more help. Second-round pick Ladd McConkey should be a featured part of this offense for years to come, but the rest of the depth chart desperately needs more help. While the interior offensive line will probably be Harbaugh's primary offseason focus, the team should invest in another set of hands. With Tee Higgins and Chris Godwin unlikely to reach the open market, Diggs might be one of the better options available.

Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jacksonville Jaguars have a budding superstar in first-round pick Brian Thomas, but first-year head coach Liam Coen could use another receiver. With Christian Kirk a likely cut candidate and Gabriel Davis disappointing in 2024, Jacksonville could sign Stefon Diggs as a free agent and immediately plug him in as the WR2 in the offense. Trevor Lawrence may not have lived up to his insane pre-draft billing, but he's still an above-average quarterback who should get the most out of the veteran.

Wide receiver Stefon Diggs is one of the biggest names on the free agent market, and the former All-Pro could sign with a longtime rival in the offseason. Origianlly entering the league with the Minnesota Vikings, Diggs joined the Buffalo Bills in 2020 before joining the Houston Texans in 2024. In four of the past five seasons, Diggs’ season ended at the hands of Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. Now set to reach unrestictred free agency, one prominent NFL insider believes the veteran could join his longtime rivals.

According to Bleacher Report‘s Moe Morton, Stefon Diggs is the ideal free agent for the Chiefs, as his injury will likely drive down his cost on the open market and the team could use a reliable set of hands for their inevitable postseason run.

“Coming off a significant injury, DIggs may be available on the free agent market at a discounted rate…The four-time Pro Bowler is an ideal fit for a team that doesn’t need him at full strength early in the season but could use a boost down the stretch and in the playoffs.”

However, he should draw some interest, and the Chiefs won’t be the only team interested in signing the veteran.

Stefon Diggs won’t break the bank as a free agent, which means Washington can use most of their money to address the secondary and offensive line.

While the interior offensive line will probably be Harbaugh’s primary offseason focus, the team should invest in another set of hands. Nico Collins: Dynasty Outlook for Star Texans Receiver https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/02/25/nico-collins-dynasty-outlook-for-star-texans-receiver/ https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/02/25/nico-collins-dynasty-outlook-for-star-texans-receiver/#respond Tue, 25 Feb 2025 17:00:39 +0000 https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/?p=219170 The Houston Texans did not take the leap many people expected them to in 2024. Injuries decimated the receiving corps, and C.J. Stroud went through a sophomore slump. One player who continued his stellar play from 2023 was Nico Collins. The former Michigan receiver proved he belongs amongst the elite. This is the dynasty outlook for Nico Collins in an exciting Texans offense.

Nico Collins: Dynasty Outlook for Star Texans Receiver

Current Production

Collins started the season in incredible form. He was the WR2 before an injury in Week 5, which kept him out until Week 11. He totaled over 100 receiving yards in three of his first four weeks and was on pace to do it again in Week 5. Unfortunately, Collins slowed down a bit after returning from his injury. He only scored over 20 fantasy points once in the final seven weeks.

He still finished with 1,006 yards and seven touchdowns in just 12 games. Collins notably plays much better at home than on the road, as six of his seven touchdowns came at NRG stadium, continuing a trend from 2023. He enjoyed a great season, but had it not been for his hamstring injury, it could have been a legendary one. He still finished as the WR7 in points per game, cementing himself as a true fantasy WR1.

Collins Dynasty Price

According to KeepTradeCut, Collins is the WR8 in dynasty and the 20th-ranked player overall. It goes without saying that with ranks like those, he won't come cheap. On FantasyCalc, most trades featuring Collins include multiple first-round picks or other fantasy superstars such as Amon-Ra St. Brown, De'Von Achane, or Drake London.

Collins will be one of the toughest players to acquire in dynasty, and with good reason. He's entering his prime and has been producing elite numbers for two seasons now. If you want to trade for him, be ready to part ways with some of your most valuable pieces.

Collins Dynasty Outlook

Coming into the season, there was a slight worry that Stefon Diggs and Tank Dell would eat too much into Collins' volume. This season proved that those worries were baseless, as Collins left no doubt as to who the best receiver in Houston is. He signed a contract extension with the Texans in 2024, so he's tied down until at least 2027.

Collins is only 25, so he still has a lot left in the tank. These next three seasons should be his peak years. Dell is recovering from a serious injury and Diggs may leave in free agency, so Collins will have to shoulder the load even more at the start of 2025. His combination of size, speed, and end zone threat make Collins a seriously dangerous receiver who will wreak havoc for years to come.

What to Do With Nico Collins in Dynasty Leagues

Unless you're seriously desperate in other positions, hold on to Collins. He's a genuinely outstanding receiver who only seems to be getting better and is a tremendous dynasty piece to have. He's not as young as someone like Brian Thomas Jr. or Malik Nabers, but he could be the overall WR1 next season, and it wouldn't be too much of a shock.

According to reports, Woods desires to re-sign a new deal with the team but it will be up to the organization if they have the same feelings back. Texans General Manager Nick Caserio already said he wants star wideout Stefon Diggs but there has yet to be on what this means for Woods' future. Originally selected in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft, the former USC product made his NFL season debut with the Buffalo Bills serving primarily as a starting wideout building a tandem with Sammy Watkins until the two parted ways and joined Sean McVay with the Rams in 2016.

He was a viable receiver for the McVay era until 2021 when he tore his ACL and hasn't been the same player he once was. Woods became a journeyman since then and joined the Titans in a trade but later joined the Texans in 2023. The veteran was more of a depth fill behind Diggs, Nico Collins and Tank Dell while falling out of the chart but still a capable weapon to grab the balls when he got the chance. It's fair to say Woods won't earn a starting role again but be more of a rotational receiver if anyone desires any consistency in their passing game.

Veteran 8,000-Yard Free Agent Robert Woods "Ready to Revamp" - Could Leave for These 5 Teams

Next Possible Destinations

Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers need just about any wide receiver to help Ladd McConkey in the aerial attack. The team doesn't have a ton of experience for quarterback Justin Herbert in the postseason. Robert Woods might be slowing down but he knows what it takes to go to the Super Bowl and is a significant upgrade over Quentin Johnston.

Los Angeles Rams

Since the Rams are putting Cooper Kupp on the trade block, the team will be in the market to find another capable weapon to pair with Puka Nacua. While they do that, they should find a veteran to help salvage the unit since the team will likely test the waters in this year's NFL Draft by finding their next pass-catcher. Woods has what the Rams are looking for and his last tenure with them was a success despite his brutal injury. The veteran probably won't earn the WR2 role but he's going to be efficient no matter who the next quarterback will be for the franchise.

Baltimore Ravens

Nelson Agholor will likely sign a one-year deal with a new team if the Ravens don't re-sign him back already. Zay Flowers and Rashod Bateman are still Lamar Jackson's two fine options in the passing attack but they lack depth behind them. Woods is not going to beat out Bateman or Flowers, but he's a dependable security veteran blanket to come in situational plays.

New Orleans Saints

The Saints are on a budget so they can't get the best wide receiver available in the market. This means they need a capable third man for whoever the next quarterback will be to succeed in Kellen Moore's offense. Woods could be a dependable option to help Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed.

Carolina Panthers

As for the Panthers, the team is getting younger and quarterback Bryce Young is finally showing signs of life. The same can be said for two young promising wide receivers Xavier Legette and Jalen Coker. However, if they want a shot to earn a spot in the wild card, the team should sign Woods for the experience to give the pass offense a chemistry boost.

Texans GM “Absolutely Open” to Star Free Agent Return – Chargers, Commanders, Saints Likely to Intervene https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/02/23/texans-gm-nick-caserio-absolutely-open-to-star-free-agent-stefon-diggs-return-chargers-commanders-saints-likely-to-intervene/ https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/02/23/texans-gm-nick-caserio-absolutely-open-to-star-free-agent-stefon-diggs-return-chargers-commanders-saints-likely-to-intervene/#respond Sun, 23 Feb 2025 18:30:48 +0000 https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/?p=218669 Texans General Manager Nick Caserio is open for star free agent Stefon Diggs to return to the team before he hits free agency. According to several sources, the general manager is leaving the door open for Diggs to return so he said they will keep an open mind. Originally selected in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL Draft, the former Maryland product became one of the most elusive wide receivers playing alongside veteran Adam Thielen as a full-time starter for the Minnesota Vikings. Diggs was the man responsible for the "Minneapolis Miracle" play that got the Vikings into the NFC Championship. However, after a trade to the Bills, he became one of the fastest players to surpass 100 catches with Buffalo, leading with 127 receptions for 1,535 receiving yards.

The tenure came to an end last offseason for the Bills where the team sent Diggs to Houston where they immediately restructured his contract that puts him on track for free agency next month. It was a "prove it" season for the veteran but the plans fell through after tearing his ACL. The injury is hindering his stock value so he will likely sign another one-year deal even if it's not with the Texans to prove he can stay healthy. Despite the roadblock, Diggs is still a dependable pass catcher who's able to put up big numbers when he's out there in the aerial attack so he should have some type of market.

Texans GM "Absolutely Open" to Star Free Agent Stefon Diggs Return - Chargers, Commanders, Saints Likely to Intervene

Help for Herbert's Offense

The Los Angeles Chargers have a promising roster but they will only get better if head coach Jim Harbaugh brings in a few capable pass catchers for quarterback Justin Herbert. The team had to survive without a consistent wide receiver for the majority of the season while Ladd McConkey is the latest wideout that's becoming Herbert's fan-favorite weapon. Quentin Johnston will probably be cut this offseason since he hasn't been able to remain reliable for Herbert to thrive in the passing game. Meanwhile, Joshua Palmer will become a free agent so they would need more than a superstar wideout but the good news is that they have money to burn.

Perhaps, they could give Diggs a lucrative two-year deal to pair with McConkey on the slant route plays. Last season, the passing game was torn apart to the point they had to bring in Jalen Reagor to give Herbert another target. It's time for the Chargers to make a splash move to give some relief to McConkey.

Other Fits

Many should expect the Commanders to find a reliable wideout to pair with Terry McLaurin. He had one of the most phenomenal wide receivers for second-year Jayden Daniels' offense. However, as Noah Brown and Olamide Zaccheaus are free agents, it's better to find the superstar wideout to boost their chances for a Super Bowl run. Diggs might not be the same player but he's easily the best replacement for that No. 2 spot to give McLaurin some support in the deep attack.

For the Saints, no matter who the quarterback will be, the wide receiver position should be one of their priorities too. Chris Olave has an uncertain future and the Saints don't have the financial liberty to pay for the top-notch talent. Perhaps, they could sneak in a deal for Diggs to sign with them if they get a new promising quarterback.

Texans Coach DeMeco Ryans On New Offensive Coordinator: “He’s The Right Guy For Our Team” https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/02/15/texans-demeco-ryans-new-offensive-coordinator/ https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/02/15/texans-demeco-ryans-new-offensive-coordinator/#respond Sat, 15 Feb 2025 18:15:07 +0000 https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/?p=216953 The Houston Texans made a huge move on their coaching staff this week, when they introduced a new Offensive Coordinator, Nick Caley, on Thursday. Caley replaces Bobby Slowik, who helped the team to back-to-back playoff appearances, but never found much postseason success. Caley joins the Texans after spending the last two seasons under Sean McVay with the Los Angeles Rams. He originally served just as the Rams' tight ends coach. However, in 2024, he began coordinating the passing game, while McVay called the plays. With that combination, the Rams finished 10th in passing in 2024.

A New Leader On Offense For DeMeco Ryans

Is Nick Caley The Key To Super Bowl Success?

Immediately, Caley will be taxed with helping CJ Stroud develop into an elite, top-level NFL quarterback. While the 2023 Offensive Rookie of the Year put up unbelievable numbers in his initial campaign, he slumped at various points in 2024. The second-year signal-caller threw for just 3,727 yards, with 20 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.

"I talked to a lot of great people throughout this process," Ryans told the media during his introduction of Caley. "It was clear, as I kept going through it, talking to people and going through my process, it was very clear that Nick was the right guy for our team."

"His energy, his leadership ability, and with him being able to understand the run game, pass game, with him being in multiple schemes, multiple schemes that were successful, understanding how to tailor the offense to the players that we have, that led me to Nick.

DeMeco Ryans addressed the Texans' need to find the right formula if they are going to make it to the franchise's first-ever Super Bowl. The Head Coach stated that hiring Caley would be a big part of that process, saying his new coordinator could take things to "another level".

"I feel really strong in my conviction that he can lead us and get us over the hump. We've had a lot of good success these first two years, and the reason we're doing it is I think there's another level that we can go to. I said earlier, it's my job to take this organization to new heights, and I think hiring Nick will help us to get there."

Moving On From Bobby Slowik

Former Coordinator Spent Two Seasons in Houston

Ryans also expressed his disappointment in having to let his former offensive coordinator go. Bobby Slowik was part of Ryan's original coaching staff when he was hired in 2023, and the pair had worked together previously. He has since moved on to become an offensive assistant for the Miami Dolphins

“It was very hard to let Bobby go,” Ryans said Thursday. “Bobby’s a really close friend, as you all know, Bobby’s a great friend of mine. When I got into coaching, Bobby was the guy who helped me figure it all out and we were (quality control assistants) together, there, in San Fran."

“So, really long relationship there with him. Nothing but love and admiration for Bobby and what he’s done. I know he’ll be a really good."

“It was very hard to let Bobby go,” Ryans said Thursday. “Bobby’s a really close friend, as you all know, Bobby’s a great friend of mine. When I got into coaching, Bobby was the guy who helped me figure it all out and we were (quality control assistants) together, there, in San Fran.”

“So, really long relationship there with him. Nothing but love and admiration for Bobby and what he’s done. I know he’ll be a really good.”
