According to a Bleacher Report, the safety is a top 7 "intriguing" athlete known for his ball skills and enticing coverage on the field. Originally selected in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft, the former Utah product always finds himself around the ball more frequently in the aerial attack which could be a useful element for the team's secondaries who play more man-to-man coverage. However, he isn't reliable when it comes to the run so that may be a reason why he could be risky he may have to settle for a backup at this point in his career before taking on a starting job.

The safety may not have the size against the run but he does have the hands to pull in a crucial interception when possible. Despite that, the NFL journey for Blackmon was off to a rocky start as the safety on the reserve list still recovering from his injury. The veteran eventually came back finishing his rookie season with 35 solo tackles, six pass deflections and one interception in 15 games and 14 starts. Following the departure of Malik Hooker, all of the eyeballs were on for Blackmon to pair him with Khari Willis.

Blackmon is still a consistent and versatile piece in the secondary so but he might have to settle for a short-term deal to prove that he could provide some upside for these three teams.

"Intriguing" Colts Free Agent Julian Blackmon Could Receive Interest Soon - 3 Suitors Emerge

Potential Destinations

Baltimore Ravens

Despite releasing Marcus Williams, the Baltimore Ravens have yet to fill that glaring depth hole. The Ravens had one of the worst pass defenses in 2024 but head coach John Harbaugh made it easier by benching Williams for Ar'Darius Washington. Things were on the right track but it wasn't enough to bring home a Super Bowl, the future is bright for the safety unit since Kyle Hamilton is in a good spot to receive an extension. The team dodged a bullet letting Brandon Stephens become a free agent since he didn't perform well himself but someone like Blackmon could make their issues go away.

He might not be able to stop the run but that's why Baltimore still has one of the best pass rushers in the league. Blackmon isn't taking over Washington's job but he could be a key contributor in situational moments on third downs. He isn't getting every play, while it gives Washington more breathing room to grow.

New Orleans Saints

Even though the New Orleans Saints cornerback department took a hit this offseason, the safety unit is in good hands. Justin Reid somehow signed with the Saints despite the salary cap of this team. However, it's not surprising since the organization is refusing to rebuild and their bringing back Derek Carr as their signal-caller is an example of that.

Despite that, the team needs depth and Blackmon could play cornerback. The Saints don't have a capable veteran in their cornerback room. Perhaps, Blackmon could be their juice to regenerate Kool-Aid McKinstry back to life.

Kansas City Chiefs

Meanwhile, the Kansas City Chiefs are on the short end of the stick. The team found themselves bringing in a reliable cornerback like Kristian Fulton to help Trent McDuffie since losing L'Jarius Sneed in 2024 to a trade. The Chiefs need to do the same about their safety unit since losing Justin Reid. Blackmon is no Reid but he could be a worthy consolation prize to help Bryan Cook in the aerial attack.

Who’ll Be the Colts Starter: Anthony Richardson or Daniel Jones? https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/03/17/wholl-be-the-colts-starter-anthony-richardson-or-daniel-jones/ https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/03/17/wholl-be-the-colts-starter-anthony-richardson-or-daniel-jones/#respond Mon, 17 Mar 2025 14:00:43 +0000 https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/?p=222997 Anthony Richardson vs. Daniel Jones might be as big as Tyson vs. Holyfield in the 1990s. Okay, it’s not quite that big of a deal, but it could be an interesting battle between the two Indianapolis Colts quarterbacks.

During the NFL Scouting Combine, Colts general manager Chris Ballard spoke about a potential quarterback competition (via CBS Sports).

“I think [a quarterback competition] is good for the team; I think it's good for Anthony. We drafted Anthony high knowing it was going to take some time, and we knew there were going to be some hiccups along the way. I know we want a finished product right now. I do. You do. Fans do. We all do. But I think as he continues to progress in his young career, us adding competition I think will help up everybody's game.”

Ballard said there would be a QB competition and he kept true to his word. He went out and signed Jones this offseason. We’ll see if the former New York Giants and Minnesota Vikings quarterback can beat out Richardson for the starting job.

Who Will Be the Indianapolis Colts Starting Quarterback: Anthony Richardson or Daniel Jones?

Revisiting Their Careers

Daniel Jones was selected sixth overall by the Giants in the 2019 NFL Draft. The former Duke star went on to have an up-and-down career in New York. He completed 64.1% of his passes for 14,582 yards and 70 touchdowns with 47 interceptions over six seasons with the Giants.

Jones went 24-44-1 as a starter and never made any Pro Bowls. However, he did lead the team to a playoff berth and a Wild Card victory during the 2022 campaign. That season, Jones threw for  3,205 yards, 15 touchdowns, and only five interceptions. He also rushed for 708 yards and seven touchdowns.

Last season, Jones struggled mightily and was eventually released. He then signed with the Vikings. However, he never played for Minnesota as he backed up starter Sam Darnold.

Anthony Richardson was drafted by the Colts fourth overall in 2023. So far, his career hasn’t gone the way he had hoped. The Florida native’s rookie year was limited to just four games due to injury.

2024 was supposed to be a bounce-back, Comeback Player of the Year type of season for Richardson. Yet, that never materialized. He missed time due to injury and being benched. He also had the lowest completion rate (47.7%) of any starting quarterback in the league.

In 15 career games, Richardson has an 8-7 record and has passed for 2,391 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions.

AR or Danny Dimes?

Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones will duke it out during training camp. It won't be shocking if Richardson comes away with the starting job. And it wouldn’t surprise anyone if Jones wins.

Richardson and Jones have similar stories. They’re both dual quarterbacks who were top-10 picks but have failed to become NFL stars.

Who will win? Look for Richardson to get the job done. He’s working with quarterback coach Chris Hess this offseason, which should help improve his accuracy issues. Plus, knowing Jones is attempting to take his job should motivate him to elevate his game to the next level.

Indianapolis Colts Might Draft Big Ten Tight End https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/03/16/indianapolis-colts-might-draft-colston-loveland/ https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/03/16/indianapolis-colts-might-draft-colston-loveland/#respond Sun, 16 Mar 2025 19:00:59 +0000 https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/?p=222937 In free agency, the Indianapolis Colts addressed the cornerback and safety positions. But the team still needs to upgrade at tight end. Perhaps they could take Michigan’s Colston Loveland in the 2025 NFL Draft. Jake Arthur of SI.com pointed out that Loveland could be a realistic option since fellow tight end Tyler Warren might not be available:

“Warren had been the exhaustive favorite to go to the Colts for much of the early draft process, and he's still a common name mocked to the Colts. However, recently, there's been a shift toward Loveland. This biggest reason appears to be that Warren is just unlikely to make it all the way to the 14th overall pick for the Colts unless they were to aggressively trade up to pursue him.”

Warren could be the perfect draft pick for the Colts. He’s undoubtedly the best tight-end prospect in this year’s draft. But like Arthur stated, he’s unlikely to be around when the Colts pick at No. 14 overall.

It could be like last year. The Colts owned the 15th overall pick and many fans wanted tight end Brock Bowers. Yet, the former Georgia star was taken 13th by the Las Vegas Raiders. Maybe Coltson will be a star in Indianapolis.

Indianapolis Colts Might Draft Michigan Tight End Colston Loveland

His Career to Date

Colston Loveland starred at Gooding High School in Gooding, Idaho. He played tight end and linebacker during his senior season. That year, Loveland caught 62 passes for 968 yards and 14 touchdowns. He also rushed for 352 yards and four touchdowns. On defense, he recorded 57 combined tackles, 5.5 sacks and two interceptions.

Loveland received offers from schools like Alabama, LSU, Auburn, and Utah. Yet, he chose to play college football at the University of Michigan. As a sophomore in 2023, he teamed with quarterback J.J. McCarthy and Co. to lead the Wolverines to a national championship. He finished the season with 45 receptions for 649 yards and four touchdowns.

In 2024, Loveland caught 56 passes for 582 yards and five touchdowns. He finished his collegiate career with a national championship, two Big Ten championships, All-American honors, and as Michigan’s single-season record holder for catches by a tight end.

Should the Colts Draft Him?

Last year, the Colts used four tight ends: Kylen Granson, Drew Ogletree, Mo Alie-Cox, and Will Mallory. The unit combined for only 39 catches for 467 yards, and two touchdowns. Granson led the group with 14 receptions for 182 yards and no touchdowns.

Granson left recently and signed a contract with the Philadelphia Eagles. Alie-Cox is a free agent and it’s unclear whether he returns to Indianapolis this offseason. Indy’s holdovers at tight end include Ogletree, Mallory, and Jelani Woods, who missed the past two seasons due to injury.

With that said, the Colts need a playmaking tight end. If Tyler Warren is unavailable, selecting Colston Loveland makes sense as a consolation prize. Who’s to say Loveland won’t have a better career than Warren will? Just because he’s predicted to be a better player, doesn’t guarantee that he will.

The 6-foot-5, 245-pound Loveland is an elite athlete with great speed and explosiveness. He could serve as an offensive weapon for the Colts quarterback, whether it's Anthony Richardson or Daniel Jones.

The Colts Should Pursue This Super Bowl Tight End https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/03/16/the-colts-should-pursue-super-bowl-tight-end-dallas-goedert/ https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/03/16/the-colts-should-pursue-super-bowl-tight-end-dallas-goedert/#respond Sun, 16 Mar 2025 12:39:05 +0000 https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/?p=222883 The Philadelphia Eagles are reportedly "open" to trade talks with veteran tight end, Dallas Goedert. In light of this, and the fact that the Colts desperately need a tight end, trading for Dallas Goedert would be a wise decision. There is already a bit of history between these two franchises, so the conversation would be smooth. Colts head coach Shane Steichen was the Eagles offensive coordinator from 2021-2022. Most recently, the Colts traded away tight end Kylen Granson to the Eagles. The Colts are also in a financial position where acquiring a playmaker like Dallas Goedert is quite feasible.

This is not to say that the Colts should forgo pursuing a tight end within the first 60 picks in the draft. They should try to acquire the best tight end available in the first or second round. Rather, this is to say that with how desperately bad the Colts tight end room has been, they need to bolster this entire unit and start fresh. This would include acquiring pieces in the draft and free agency.

Why the Colts Should Pursue Dallas Goedert

His Career Thus Far

Dallas Goedert has played seven seasons in the NFL all of which have been with the Eagles. Since coming into the league in 2018, he has never made a Pro Bowl but has been an extremely solid and consistent playmaker. His career receiving success rate is 61.8 and his career catch percentage is 73.3. Last season, however, was a down year for him, in terms of production. He missed several games due to injury, but when on the field he was very reliable. In the 10 games he was able to play last season, he accumulated 496 yards, two touchdowns, and a catch percentage rate of 80%.

To put things into perspective, the Colts leading tight end, Kylen Granson accumulated just 182 yards in 6 starts and 17 appearances. Dallas Goedert is not a game-changing player, but for the Colts, he is a big improvement from what they currently have. Throughout his career, it is evident that he is just what the Colts need in a tight end. They need someone reliable, can be a security blanket for quarterbacks, and has sure hands.

His Immediate Impact on the Offense

As mentioned, a Dallas Goedert signing would be a major improvement for the Colts tight end room. With the current group that the Colts have, the ceiling is not very high, but adding Goedert to the mix would instantly lift the ceiling and would also lift the floor. If a team trades its best tight end who managed 182 yards in one season, that team has some major issues at tight end. Goedert would not be the kind of tight end that the Colts could continually rely on as the number one guy. However, he could serve as a solid number two behind a high draft pick.

At this point, any tight end with a semblance of consistency and talent would be an improvement for the Colts. Nonetheless, Goedert is probably the biggest and most talented tight end on the market right now. If the Colts want to continue the momentum from the first wave of free agent signings, they need to continue bolstering the team and they can do that by signing a talent like Dallas Goedert.

Will the Indianapolis Colts Feature an Elite Secondary in 2025? https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/03/16/will-the-indianapolis-colts-feature-an-elite-secondary-in-2025/ https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/03/16/will-the-indianapolis-colts-feature-an-elite-secondary-in-2025/#respond Sun, 16 Mar 2025 14:00:34 +0000 https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/?p=222849 Do the Indianapolis Colts have an elite secondary? If you asked that question a couple of weeks ago, you’d get laughed at. But with a few moves the Colts have made this offseason, their secondary is surely looking like a great unit.

The Colts allowed 229.4 passing yards per game last year (26th in the NFL). Yeah, that’s not good at all. But perhaps, the new and improved secondary can get the job done next season.

Will the Indianapolis Colts Feature an Elite Secondary in 2025?

Offseason Additions Thus Far

Colts general manager Chris Ballard is usually not aggressive on Day 1 of free agency. However, he certainly wasn’t quiet this year. On Day 1, Ballard signed safety Camryn Bynum to a four-year, $60 million deal. Bynum is coming off a career season in 2024. He recorded 96 tackles, three interceptions, and 10 passes defended with the Minnesota Vikings.
Ballard wasn’t done with the Bynum addition. That same day, he also signed cornerback Charvarius Ward to a three-year, $60 million deal. Ward won a Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs during the 2019 campaign. He later had a breakout season in 2023 with the San Francisco 49ers. That year, Ward led the league in pass breakups with 23, and also produced five interceptions, 72 combined tackles, and held quarterbacks to a 64.5 passer rating when targeted. For his efforts, Ward earned second-team All-Pro honors and was selected to his first Pro Bowl.

This offseason, the Colts have added Corey Ballentine as well. The veteran cornerback spent the last three seasons with the Green Bay Packers. He was primarily a special teams player last season, playing only eight percent of defensive snaps. Ballentine will provide Indy with much-needed depth at the cornerback position.

What to Expect in 2025

The Colts’ defense was horrible in 2024. That led to the team parting ways with Gus Bradley and replacing him with defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo. Anarumo was fired by the Cincinnati Bengals this offseason following a lousy defensive season. Perhaps the main reason for that, though, was Cincinnati’s shortage of defensive playmakers. In Indianapolis, Anarumo possesses several quality defenders. Ted Nguyen of The Athletic wrote about that:

“The Colts already had pass rushers with DeForest Buckner, Kwity Paye, and promising second-year defensive end Laiatu Latu. Now, they've massively upgraded the secondary through free agency with the additions of Cam Bynum and cornerback Charvarius Ward.”

The way it looks right now, the Colts will start Ward, Jaylon Jones, and Kenny Moore II at cornerback. Meanwhile, Bynum and Nick Cross are expected to be the starting safeties. Players like JuJu Brents, Samuel Womack III, and Rodney Thomas II will provide depth.

If injuries don’t get in the way, the Colts’ secondary could be an elite unit in 2025. Anarumo is a defensive guru who helped the Bengals reach Super Bowl LVI. Don’t look for the Colts to make a Super Bowl run next season. But with guys like Ward, Bynum, and Moore leading the way, Anarumo’s new secondary could emerge as one of the NFL’s best in 2025. Ward is Indy’s first true CB1 since Stephon Gilmore was traded in 2023. Bynum is a reliable and miltifaceted defender, and Moore is one of the league's top slot cornerbacks.

Do the Indianapolis Colts have an elite secondary?

Now, they’ve massively upgraded the secondary through free agency with the additions of Cam Bynum and cornerback Charvarius Ward.”

What a Daniel Jones Signing Means for the Colts https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/03/15/what-a-daniel-jones-signing-means-for-the-colts/ https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/03/15/what-a-daniel-jones-signing-means-for-the-colts/#respond Sat, 15 Mar 2025 16:15:38 +0000 https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/?p=222207 It was confirmed that the Minnesota Vikings quarterback Daniel Jones signed a one-year contract with the Indianapolis Colts. Chris Ballard mentioned that a quarterback competition would be coming and the Colts have brought that to Anthony Richardson in Daniel Jones. At the close of the 2024 season, the Colts had more questions than answers regarding their quarterback. Richardson came off a disappointing season in which he suffered injuries again and displayed immaturity. This all came to prominence when he got benched midway through the season.

Needless to say, Anthony Richardson is not the sure-fire starter for 2025, and bringing Daniel Jones in could shake things up. Jones could be exactly what Richardson needs to be pushed into greatness. Jones could also be exactly what the franchise needs if Richardson is ultimately a bust. However, Jones could also see the franchise back if his play is that of a career backup. Regardless, the Colts have an interesting situation on their hands and need to be careful with how they approach this. By all accounts, Jones is going to compete for the starting job against Richardson which could ultimately shape the future of the Colts.

The Impact that Daniel Jones Can Have With the Indianapolis Colts

The Impact on Anthony Richardson

The direct impact that a Daniel Jones signing will have with the Colts is his impact on Anthony Richardson. As mentioned, Richardson had a disappointing 2024 season after a promising rookie 2023 season. With Chris Ballard's career, potentially, on the line, the stakes were high going into 2025. Richardson is in a make-or-break year and the Colts do not have much room for patience with him. If he is going to finally perform like a first-round draft pick, year three needs to be it. Bringing in a guy like Daniel Jones, who has faced adversity in his career, and has had success and failure, could be very beneficial to Richardson.

The Impact on the Franchise

The Colts cannot afford to continue on the quarterback carousel. Since 2019, they have been trying to find a long-term quarterback who can be the face of the franchise. In these past six seasons, the Colts have brought in three veteran quarterbacks before finally drafting Anthony Richardson in 2023. While all roads lead to Richardson being the inevitable starter in 2025, the verdict is still out on whether he can live up to those expectations. However, by bringing in a playmaker like Daniel Jones, the Colts are not setting themselves up for long-term success. Jones certainly has talent and could very well shock the world in 2025. However, in all likelihood, Jones is a career backup now and can win games here and there. Therefore, Jones is not an answer at quarterback if Richardson is a bust. The Colts would have to continue the carousel ride.

The Impact on Daniel Jones

Like all quarterbacks who go from being a starter to a backup, there is still a drive to get back to being a starter. Jones has an interesting opportunity ahead in 2025 as it could be an audition for him to play elsewhere with a team in 2026 as their starter or reliable backup. Naturally, he could also be the starter for the Colts in 2026. Who knows? The verdict is still out on him. Jones had a terrible 2024 season which ended in being benched and eventually released.

Nonetheless, Jones was the Giants starter up until that point for a reason. He had the best season of his career in 2022 where he led the Giants to 9 wins and a playoff birth. In this season, he ranked sixth in total QBR and his interception percentage was the best in the league. In 2023, Jones had a season-ending injury and in 2024, he just wasn't the same. That being said, though, the NFL is a what-have-you-done-for-me-lately league and he has not done anything significant lately. However, Daniel Jones should take this opportunity with the Colts as a way to put himself back on the map.

Sam Darnold was able to resurrect his career with the Minnesota Vikings and has a chance to be a starting quarterback again in Seattle. This is not to say that Jones will replicate this in Indianapolis. However, it does bring to light the possibility that Daniel Jones will have every opportunity to be successful again and he has the chance to show that in 2025 with the Colts.

Mock Draft Has Colts Selecting Second-Round Quarterback https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/03/14/mock-draft-has-colts-selecting-quarterback-jalen-milroe/ https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/03/14/mock-draft-has-colts-selecting-quarterback-jalen-milroe/#respond Fri, 14 Mar 2025 14:00:32 +0000 https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/?p=222537 The Indianapolis Colts have Anthony Richardson and the newly signed Daniel Jones. But should they still take a quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft? Ryan Heckman of Horseshoe Heroes put together a mock draft and has the Colts drafting Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe in the second round:

"Here's the answer to the big question: no, the signing of Jones does not impact the Colts' potential to take a quarterback. Look, this is a team that's had a very difficult time figuring out the quarterback position since the retirement of Andrew Luck. This is also a team that is unafraid to carry three quarterbacks if need be. Behind Richardson and Jones, Alabama's Jalen Milroe can sit and learn for a year (or two). Milroe offers a ton of upside as a rusher, which fits the bill of Jones and Richardson's strengths. If he can be refined as a passer, maybe, just maybe, Milroe pans out as the guy. And oh, by the way, Milroe fell to this spot simply because this quarterback class is exactly as advertised. It's not nearly what previous classes have been."

The Colts certainly have questions at the quarterback spot? Will drafting Milroe help?

Mock Draft Has the Colts Selecting Quarterback Jalen Milroe

Looking Back at His Career

Jalen Milroe starred at Tompkins High School in Katy, Texas. During his career there, he recorded 3,825 passing yards, 559 rushing yards, and 53 touchdowns.

Milroe committed to play college football for the Texas Longhorns. Yet, he wound up choosing the University of Alabama. During his first two years with the Crimson Tide, Milroe backed up current Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young.

Milroe was named Alabama’s starter in 2023, replacing Young, who was the top pick in the NFL draft. During the 2023 regular season, Milroe powered the Crimson Tide to a 12-1 record and an SEC Championship. He later led the school to the 2024 Rose Bowl, where they lost 27-20 against No. 1 Michigan. Milroe finished the year passing for 2,834 yards and 23 touchdowns. He also rushed for 531 yards and 12 touchdowns.

In 2024, Jalen Milroe threw for 2,844 yards and 16 touchdowns. He rushed for 726 yards and 20 touchdowns as well.

Should the Colts Draft Him?

General manager Chris Ballard said the Colts were going to add a quarterback this offseason to compete with Anthony Richardson. And he was right, as the team brought in Daniel Jones.

Richardson and Jones will battle for the starting job. It’ll be interesting to see who wins. Both players haven’t had remarkable NFL careers thus far and are trying to prove themselves. Meanwhile, Sam Ehlinger (if he re-signs with the team) will likely compete with the undrafted Jason Bean for the No. 3 quarterback spot.

Should Indianapolis draft Jalen Milroe, who could also compete for the third QB spot? It wouldn’t be foolish to take a quarterback late in the draft. But drafting one in the second round doesn’t make any sense. And it certainly doesn’t make sense to draft Milroe. Yes, Milroe is an exceptional athlete who possesses arm strength. Yet, he struggles when it comes to accuracy. With that said, Milroe is a lot like Richardson. There would be no point in drafting him, especially after looking at how badly Richardson has struggled since he entered the league in 2023.

Could Former Big 12 Star Become Colts QB1? https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/03/13/could-jason-bean-become-colts-starting-quarterback/ https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/03/13/could-jason-bean-become-colts-starting-quarterback/#respond Thu, 13 Mar 2025 15:07:26 +0000 https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/?p=222420 Unless you’re a big-time college football fan, you likely don’t know much about Jason Bean. The young Indianapolis Colts quarterback has never played a regular-season game. With that said, there’s not much to know about his NFL career. However, he could ultimately emerge as Indy’s QB1.

Yes, it sounds a bit absurd to say Bean could become the Colts’ starting quarterback, especially seeing that he went undrafted. Yet, there have been several undrafted quarterbacks in NFL history who later became starters. Hall of Famers Kurt Warner and Warren Moon are the most accomplished of the group. Other notable undrafted QBs include Tony Romo, Jeff Garcia, and Jake Delhomme. So Jason Bean can do the same.

Could Jason Bean Become the Colts Quarterback?

His Career Thus Far

Jason Bean played six seasons of college football. His career began with the North Texas Mean Green. During the 2020 campaign, he recorded 19 touchdowns (14 passing and five rushing). He also threw for 1,131 yards over eight games (COVID-shortened season).

Bean later transferred to Kansas, where he spent his final three years. During his last season with the Jayhawks, he led the school to a 9-4 record and their first bowl win in 15 years. In that bowl game, he threw for 449 yards and six touchdowns as Kansas beat UNLV 49-36 in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl. He threw for 2,130 yards and 18 touchdowns while rushing for 280 yards and three touchdowns during the 2023 campaign.

After going undrafted in the 2024 NFL Draft, Jason Bean was signed by the Colts as a free agent. He was impressive during last year’s preseason. He completed 15 of his 19 pass attempts (78.9 percent) for 197 yards and a touchdown. Bean also rushed for 53 yards (4.81 yards per carry) and a pair of touchdowns. But despite a strong preseason, Bean failed to beat out Sam Ehlinger for the Colts’ third quarterback spot. He was placed on the team’s practice squad. Meanwhile, Anthony Richardson was the starter, and veteran Joe Flacco served as the primary backup in 2024.

Could He Become the Colts’ QB1?

Flacco, a free agent this year, will not return to the Colts. And it’s unclear whether Ehlinger will re-sign this offseason.

Richardson isn’t expected to be traded this offseason. In training camp, he’ll compete with the newly signed Daniel Jones for the starting job.

Jason Bean could win the No. 3 spot this year, perhaps beating out Ehlinger (if he re-signs with the Colts). But he could also be the starter down the road. Last season, both Richardson and Jones (with the New York Giants) struggled and were benched. Plus, each player has had their share of injuries so far.

Bean could get the opportunity to start at some point during the 2025 season if both Richardson and Jones are unavailable. If Bean does get that chance, he could wind up pulling a Brock Purdy, and pretty much come out of nowhere to shine.

The extremely athletic Bean is a dual-threat quarterback and is capable of making exciting plays. It’s doubtful, he’ll ever become the Colts’ QB1, but, you certainly shouldn’t rule it out.

Can the Colts Defense Replicate the Success of the Eagles? https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/03/11/can-the-colts-defense-replicate-the-success-of-the-eagles/ https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/03/11/can-the-colts-defense-replicate-the-success-of-the-eagles/#respond Wed, 12 Mar 2025 02:07:40 +0000 https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/?p=221899 For the first time in Chris Ballard's career with the Indianapolis Colts, they are starting free agency with a huge splash. With a fire being lit under Ballard, it is safe to say that the Colts are trying to set their defense up for success in 2025. The first of the big signings was on defense. This was one of the areas that the Colts needed to improve. On Monday, it was announced that Camryn Bynum will sign a four-year, $60M contract. Bynum is a young, 26-year-old safety who was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in 2021. His most explosive season came in 2023 in which he wracked up 94 solo tackles, which ranked sixth in the league. He also had two interceptions and three forced fumbles. Ward will be expected to start in favor of Julian Blackmon, as he is the better talent.

On top of signing a strong free-agent safety, Chris Ballard also signed San Francisco 49ers's cornerback Charvarius Ward. He signed a three-year, $60M contract and will look to be a key asset to the Colts' secondary. Ward is a veteran defensive back who had a monster 2023 season in which he made the Pro Bowl. In that season alone, he wracked up 23 pass deflections, five interceptions, and one forced fumble. With JuJu Brents having reliability issues due to injury, having a strong starting cornerback will be huge for the secondary. Coupling Ward's talent with Bynum's talent will be a big contributing factor to the success of the Colts' defense.

How the Colts Can Replicate the Success of the Philadelphia Eagles Defense?

The Philadelphia Eagles did the impossible in the 2024 NFL season. Their defense went from being one of the worst in the league the previous year to dominating the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl. The Colts are in a similar situation in which they were one of the worst defenses in 2024. With a completely new look to their defense, they will strive to do a complete 180 and become one of the best. If the Eagles were able to gain success on defense, so can the Colts, and there are two key elements to get them there.

The Scheme of Lou Anarumo

The biggest move that the Colts made at the close of the season was hiring defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo. Widely considered a "mad scientist", Anarumo has a scheme that exploits the talents of his players. Instead, he utilizes the strengths of his players and calls plays accordingly. Now that the Colts have implemented more talent on defense, the road to success is shorter.

The Execution of the Players

This goes hand-in-hand with a good scheme. If the players execute a good scheme, the defense will have success. The Colts do not have the same kind of defense as the Eagles. They also do not have the same kind of players. However, the Colts do have a lot to prove in 2025, and Ballard has given Anarumo the players he will need to make this unit great. Acquiring Bynum and Ward was a huge starting point for this defense, but the job is not yet done. The Colts still need to shore up some defensive line help. They also need to acquire some depth at linebacker, as EJ Speed is a free agent, and there's no telling where Zaire Franklin will be after a controversial 2024 season.

Nonetheless, the Colts are off to a good start on defense, and hopefully, the path they are heading will lead them to success. Ballard just needs to keep the momentum going. Indy has a long way to go before they can turn this defense around, but they have the pieces in place to go from one of the worst to one of the best.

For the first time in Chris Ballard’s career with the Indianapolis Colts, they are starting free agency with a huge splash.

On top of signing a strong free-agent safety, Chris Ballard also signed San Francisco 49ers’s cornerback Charvarius Ward. He signed a three-year, $60M contract and will look to be a key asset to the Colts’ secondary. Coupling Ward’s talent with Bynum’s talent will be a big contributing factor to the success of the Colts’ defense.

Widely considered a “mad scientist“, Anarumo has a scheme that exploits the talents of his players.

They also need to acquire some depth at linebacker, as EJ Speed is a free agent, and there’s no telling where Zaire Franklin will be after a controversial 2024 season.

Nonetheless, the Colts are off to a good start on defense, and hopefully, the path they are heading will lead them to success. Ballard just needs to keep the momentum going. Indy has a long way to go before they can turn this defense around, but they have the pieces in place to go from one of the worst to one of the best.
