According to the report, the Jaguars are beginning a new regime on their roster and if that's the case, the team trading Walker would make sense despite his production. Originally selected in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, the former Georgia product was a controversial pick for the Jaguars since star Aidan Hutchinson was still up on the board. Walker did prove everyone wrong after recording double-digit sacks in his three-year career in the league and he isn't slowing down anytime soon.

Most teams who were looking into Maxx Crosby or Myles Garrett didn't get the chance to pursue them. Both of them are on new deals now, making Walker a potential trade candidate, especially for the rebuilding Jaguars. After releasing Evan Engram, Josh Reynolds and trading Christian Kirk, the Jaguars are not in the best position for at least a postseason contention so it makes sense to field some trade offers which one source believes they are doing before the NFL Draft. Jacksonville probably won't fit the bill for Walker's production next offseason when he's a free agent so it's best for them to consider trading him to these five teams who could generate interest.

Breaking: NFL Executives Suggest Travon Walker Trade Could Happen - 5 Possible Destinations

Potential Trade Candidates

Baltimore Ravens

Last season, the Baltimore Ravens had a dramatic change in their defense after losing Jadeveon Clowney and Geno Stone. The team wasn't able to make up for it as linebacker Trenton Simpson has been struggling to get anything going for the pass rush. It was on Odafe Oweh and Kyle Van Noy to keep the defense stabilized but it didn't happen that way. The Ravens need one last push for Super Bowl contention and while Walker is still young, he could be the final bonafide piece to help Travis Jones and Broderick Washington in the trenches.

Los Angeles Chargers

Nobody loves a physical defense more than head coach Jim Harbaugh. The Los Angeles Chargers are making moves on offense but they took a huge hit on their defense after losing Poona Ford. The team did retain Teair Tart but he might not excel the same way if the team doesn't find some type of upgrade. Walker has the size and fits the billing for this defense and could be a worthy upgrade since the Chargers have money to blow.

Washington Commanders

Meanwhile, the Commanders didn't have much success in their defense despite hiring former defensive coordinator Dan Quinn to be their head coach. The team was expected to make some upgrades on the defensive line but only made a few changes despite releasing Jonathan Allen. Javon Kinlaw is nothing but average and the same can be said about Deatrich Wise. Since the Commanders were aggressive in trading for Laremy Tunsil, the team should trade for someone like Walker to bolster the pass rush.

Dallas Cowboys

For the Cowboys, the defense will look dramatically different too but on a positive note. The team bringing back Dante Fowler Jr. and signing Jack Sanborn should give them enough pass-rush help when Micah Parsons returns on a potential new deal. Since they're on one-year deals, they should trade for Walker and if he performs well, they could consider giving him a long-term extension.

Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs are not far from Super Bowl contention other than their offensive weapons looking like a mess. However, they did lose a significant man in Tershawn Wharton who was explosive alongside star defensive tackle Chris Jones. Walker could be the next big-time trade to finally upgrade the defensive trench for Jones.

According to sources, the Jaguars are moving on from the veteran after spending the last year with the Jaguars. Originally selected in the second round of the 20215 NFL Draft, the former Florida State product signed a two-year deal with Jacksonville last offseason after impressing many suitors during his short stint in Baltimore. Darby held most quarterbacks to a completion percentage of 44.2% and a 63.3% passer rating but couldn't replicate that same energy with the Jaguars so the team is moving on without giving him a chance to redeem himself.

Since trading Christian Kirk and releasing Evan Engram, there has been a cultural shift in the roster, at least for the offense. After signing Jourdan Lewis, it made it more obvious the team would be moving on from the cornerback. Darby will probably have to take a veteran minimum contract on his next deal if he attracts any suitors on the market but he has been playing more special teams on the field. This could increase his chances of finding a new opportunity, but he might not sign with a new team until near the beginning of the 2025 season.

However, his abilities bring experience and nostalgia for any team that is looking to take their team to the next level of capturing a Super Bowl. Darby has Lombardi experience and this is why he could be a solid fit for these three teams.

Next Possible Teams

Baltimore Ravens

This past 2024 campaign, the Baltimore Ravens had one of the worst pass secondaries in the league. However, they made up for it when head coach John Harbaugh made the switch to start Ar'Darius Washington over Marcus Williams. The team saw some improvement but it was too late since most cornerbacks were off chemistry on the football. Baltimore can only depend on veteran Marlon Humphrey who they're bringing back on a new contract.

Meanwhile, they lost Brandon Stephens who already had an atrocious season so they weren't missing out on anything. Nate Wiggins is still adjusting to the league so they need a starter and depth either way since they let go of Arthur Maulet as well. Darby probably won't start but they could get him in the mix to make some exploding plays like he did with them in 2023.

Kansas City Chiefs

For the Chiefs, the team now has enough depth in the cornerback department since losing L'Jarius Sneed in a trade last offseason. However, there's no such thing as too many cornerbacks in the league. The Chiefs have Jaylen Watson and Trent McDuffie as two solid starters but they could use a veteran assist from Darby to back up one of them since Kristian Fulton is now in the fold.

Los Angeles Chargers

The Los Angeles Chargers secondary unit will look completely different next season. The team made several changes as Donte Jackson is the replacement for Fulton and Tarheeb Still is the current starter for the Chargers. With that, Still isn't ready for full-time duties so Darby could fill the spot to increase the competition in the secondary department.

BREAKING: Pro Bowl Quarterback Signs Contract With San Francisco 49ers https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/03/12/mac-jones-signs-contract-49ers/ https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/03/12/mac-jones-signs-contract-49ers/#respond Thu, 13 Mar 2025 02:00:30 +0000 https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/?p=209414 Four-year veteran quarterback Mac Jones signed a new contract with the San Francisco 49ers. Jones, a former first-round pick, spent the 2024 season with the Jacksonville Jaguars but has also played for the New England Patriots.

Mac Jones, 49ers, Agree to Contract

After a disastrous finish with the New England Patriots, Robert Kraft's organization traded the former first-round pick to the Jaguars early in the 2025 league year. Brought on to be the primary backup for Trevor Lawrence, Jones saw extended action after the former first-overall pick suffered multiple injuries. Making seven starts while appearing in 10 games, Jones went 2-5 on the season while completing 65.3% of his passes for 1,672 yards, eight touchdowns, and eight interceptions.

Jones originally entered the league as a first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Selected by the New England Patriots, the Alabama product spent his rookie training camp battling veteran Cam Newton for the starting job. Emerging victorious, Jones started all 17 games and looked like a potential franchise quarterback. Guiding the team to a 10-7 record, the rookie finished his inaugural season by completing 67.6% of his passes for 3,801 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. While the season with a blowout loss to the Buffalo Bills in the Wild Card round, the future looked bright for Jones and the Patriots.

Unfortunately, the quarterback could not build on that promising rookie season. After losing offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels to the Las Vegas Raiders, Jones struggled to adapt to de-facto offensive coordinator Matt Patricia. Going 6-8 in his 14 healthy starts, Jones finished the season with 2,997 passing yards, 14 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.

The Patriots brought in old friend Bill O'Brien for the 2023 season, but Jones continues his downward spiral. Starting in 11 games, the quarterback recorded 2,120 yards, 10 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions before head coach Bill Belichick benched him for Bailey Zappe.

Since signing his rookie contract, Mac Jones has appeared in 52 games while making 49 starts. While on the field, the Alabama product has completed 65.9% of his passes for 10,590 yards, 54 touchdowns, and 44 interceptions.

Evan Engram, Denver Broncos, Agree to Contract

The Jacksonville Jaguars struggled through the 2024 season, but Evan Engram had a solid season despite the chaos. While injuries limited him to just nine games, the veteran still recorded 47 receptions for 365 yards, one touchdown, and a 74.5 PFF grade, the 12th-best mark out of 74 eligible players. Unfortunately, this wasn't enough to save head coach Doug Pederson's job, and new head coach Liam Coen decided to release the veteran ahead of the 2025 league year.

Evan Engram originally entered the league as a first-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. Selected by the New York Giants, the Mississippi product began his career on a high note. Appearing in 15 games while making 11 starts, the rookie finished his inaugural season with 64 receptions for 722 yards and six touchdowns on 115 targets. Despite his efforts, the Giants could not make the playoffs.

The Giants fired Ben McAdoo midway through the 2017 season and Engram never truly found a home with head coaches Pat Shurmur and Joe Judge. While he made the Pro Bowl in 2020 with a 63-catch, 654-yard season, he ultimately finished his Giants tenure on a low note. In 2021, the tight end appeared in 15 games and recorded just 46 receptions for 408 yards and three touchdowns.

Now a free agent, Evan Engram signed a new contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2022 offseason. This proved to be a great investment, as the former first-round pick recorded 73 receptions for 766 yards and four touchdowns while helping Trevor Lawrence and company make the playoffs and pull off a fantastic comeback in the Wild Card Round. He was even better in 2023, making the Pro Bowl while recording 114 receptions for 963 yards and four touchdowns.

The First Pick Paradox and How the Double-Edged Sword Has Reshaped Draft Strategy https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/03/12/first-pick-paradox-double-edged-sword-reshaped-draft-strategy/ https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/03/12/first-pick-paradox-double-edged-sword-reshaped-draft-strategy/#respond Wed, 12 Mar 2025 13:00:27 +0000 https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/?p=222039 Imagine holding a lottery ticket that could either save your franchise or haunt it for a decade. That’s the First Pick Paradox in a nutshell—a high-stakes gamble where “can’t-miss” prospects sometimes miss spectacularly while overlooked gems shine. It’s like "Black Mirror" meets "Draft Day," where every decision splits the timeline into infinite possibilities. For the Tennessee Titans, holding the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft isn’t just a golden ticket—it’s a Schrödinger’s cat of pressure, hope, and sleepless nights.

Now, picture this: A team with the league’s worst record (3-14) suddenly holds the keys to draft royalty. Do they grab a franchise quarterback or a generational edge rusher? It’s the NFL’s version of "The Hunger Games"—survival hinges on strategy, not just talent. The Titans aren’t just picking a player; they’re choosing a path that could redefine their future. And as free agency shakes up the board, the paradox sharpens: Do you fix glaring needs or chase transcendent talent?

The Titans’ Generational Gamble

Tennessee’s front office claims they won’t pass on a “generational talent” at No. 1. Translation: Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter, who led college football with 24 tackles for loss in 2024, is their target. But here’s the twist—Centerstage Sports agent Drew Rosenhaus recently revealed Carter has a stress reaction in his right foot, though he insists his client will put on a show at his pro day.” Meanwhile, the Titans released veteran Harold Landry, creating a gaping hole at pass rusher. Carter’s raw power and explosiveness could fill it, but is he worth skipping a quarterback in a Quarterback-driven league?

It’s a classic First Pick Paradox playbook. Think "Moneyball" meets "Ocean’s Eleven"—weighing analytics against gut instincts. The Titans’ 2024 defense ranked 28th in sacks (27), and Carter’s 6’3”, 250-pound frame screams “game-wrecker.” But passing on a quarterback like Miami’s Cam Ward, the 2024 Davey O’Brien Award winner, risks repeating the Deshaun Watson-era Browns’ mistakes. Ward threw for 4,313 yards and 43 touchdowns last season, yet Cleveland’s quarterback carousel still spins like a "Stranger Things" upside-down world.

Meanwhile, the New York Giants at No. 3 are flirting with Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders, a polarizing prospect with 41 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 2024. GM Joe Schoen and coach Brian Daboll were spotted chatting up Sanders at the East-West Shrine Bowl, sparking rumors of a smokescreen—or genuine interest. Besides, either it’s the biggest smokescreen ever, or the Giants are in love. In today’s NFL, drafting for upside often trumps immediate fixes.

But the First Pick Paradox cuts deeper. For every Patrick Mahomes, there’s a JaMarcus Russell. The Titans’ choice will ripple across the draft, forcing teams like the Patriots (No. 4) and Jaguars (No. 5) to pivot. Will they chase Travis Hunter’s two-way stardom or Mason Graham’s defensive anchor potential? The clock’s ticking—and the stakes are higher than a "Squid Game" elimination round.

Ripple effects and reinvented blueprints for the first pick

The First Pick Paradox isn’t just Tennessee’s problem—it’s a league-wide fever dream. Take the Browns at No. 2, who skipped quarterback for Colorado’s Travis Hunter, a Swiss Army knife who could play wide receiver or cornerback. “Hunter has a credible path to becoming a Pro Bowl player at either receiver or cornerback,” ESPN’s Field Yates noted. Cleveland’s gamble mirrors the NBA’s positionless trend, prioritizing versatility over traditional needs. But in a division with Lamar Jackson and Joe Burrow, does avoiding QB2 spell doom?

Meanwhile, the Raiders (No. 6) doubled down on nostalgia, trading for Geno Smith and drafting Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty—a Barry Sanders-esque rusher with 2,601 yards in 2024. New coach Pete Carroll is rebuilding his "Legion of Boom 2.0", but in a pass-happy league, betting on a bell-cow back feels like rewinding to "Friday Night Lights." Yet Jeanty’s 7.0 yards per carry and 30 touchdowns can’t be ignored. It’s a high-risk, high-reward play—the essence of the First Pick Paradox.

Even contenders aren’t immune. The Chiefs (No. 31) grab Ohio State tackle Josh Simmons to protect Patrick Mahomes after their Super Bowl LIX loss exposed shaky tackles. “Simmons allowed just one QB pressure and no sacks on 152 pass-blocking snaps last season, which was good for the lowest pressure rate allowed (0.7%) by any tackle with at least 100 pass block snaps. Kansas City gets a steal here,” per CBS Sports. For Philly (No. 32), replacing Josh Sweat with Texas A&M’s Nic Scourton (29 TFL since 2023) keeps their trenches fearsome. These picks aren’t sexy, but they’re chess moves in a league where championships are won in the trenches.

The paradox reshapes everything. Teams now draft like "Moneyball" savants, blending analytics with existential dread. Do you chase the next Travis Kelce (Michigan TE Colston Loveland to the Chargers) or lockdown corners (Texas’ Jahdae Barron to Green Bay)? The answer lies in balancing desperation with vision—a tightrope walk where one misstep triggers a rebuild.

The draft’s new reality

The First Pick Paradox isn’t going away. It’s the NFL’s version of "The Matrix"—a system where choices define realities. For the Titans, picking Carter or Ward will write their next chapter. For the Giants, Sanders could be Daniel Jones’ successor or another cautionary tale. And for the league, 2025’s draft in Lambeau Field isn’t just about talent—it’s a referendum on risk, patience, and the eternal quest for the perfect pick.

In the end, the paradox reminds us: There are no sure things, only calculated leaps. Whether teams soar or crash depends on how they wield the double-edged sword.

It’s the NFL’s version of “The Hunger Games”—survival hinges on strategy, not just talent.

Think “Moneyball” meets “Ocean’s Eleven”—weighing analytics against gut instincts. Ward threw for 4,313 yards and 43 touchdowns last season, yet Cleveland’s quarterback carousel still spins like a “Stranger Things” upside-down world.

The clock’s ticking—and the stakes are higher than a “Squid Game” elimination round.

New coach Pete Carroll is rebuilding his “Legion of Boom 2.0”, but in a pass-happy league, betting on a bell-cow back feels like rewinding to “Friday Night Lights.” Yet Jeanty’s 7.0 yards per carry and 30 touchdowns can’t be ignored.

Teams now draft like “Moneyball” savants, blending analytics with existential dread.

It’s the NFL’s version of “The Matrix”—a system where choices define realities.

“Surprising” NFL Blockbuster Trade Could Be in The Works https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/03/10/surprising-nfl-blockbuster-arik-armstead-trade-could-be-in-the-works/ https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/03/10/surprising-nfl-blockbuster-arik-armstead-trade-could-be-in-the-works/#respond Mon, 10 Mar 2025 22:07:19 +0000 https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/?p=221854 A surprising blockbuster move from the Jacksonville Jaguars could involve Arik Armstead in a trade this free agency. The NFL is already busy this week as many teams across the league are making moves to improve their roster. According to a Bleacher Report, the Jaguars might open up the discussion to send Armstead in a trade after having an underwhelming season despite signing a three-year, $43.5 million dollar deal. The defensive lineman played just 48 percent of defensive snaps which is his lowest since his rookie year with the San Francisco 49ers in 2015.

Originally selected in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft, the former Oregon product had one of the worst seasons in his career after signing one of the biggest contracts in the league as a defensive lineman. However, the Jaguars are building a new regime as they have a new coaching staff and general manager. Bleacher Report believes that anytime that happens then they would likely cut or trade the underperforming veterans on the team and that is likely true. The Jaguars have made several moves on their offensive side of the ball after trading Christian Kirk and getting a new offensive lineman for quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

It shouldn't come as a surprise if the team winds up releasing more veterans beyond Armstead. For the sake of this post, the veteran won't attract many suitors but he could earn a one-year deal with these three teams.

"Surprising" Arik Armstead Trade Could Be in The Works

3 Suitors Could Emerge

Baltimore Ravens

It's been a quiet free agency for the Baltimore Ravens so far. However, they don't have the financial liberty to make enormous amounts of signings but they are losing free agents from their defensive armory. Brandon Stephens is the latest man to leave the team but as the defense is getting younger, it's fair for the Ravens to wait until Armstead becomes available in the market. They probably won't trade for him at the expense of his contract but if the Jaguars part ways with Armstead, many should expect the Ravens to be strong suitors for him.

Nnamdi Madubuike still had a decent 2024 campaign but Travis Jones and Broderick Washington have yet to break out. After losing Jadeveon Clowney last offseason, the Ravens will only get younger as long as they will allow it. Yannick Ngakoue returning back even for a little is an indicator that Baltimore needs a veteran lineman to withhold the trenches. Armstead won't do much on the first few games but with his experience, it would be an upgrade either way.

Washington Commanders

Meanwhile, the Washington Commanders are in a different type of situation where they could spend money. They've let go of Jonathan Allen but it wasn't too long before the team found a replacement in Javon Kinlaw who reunites with Adam Peters. The team still has cap space to work with even after trading for Laremy Tunsil so they could add another ferocious lineman if they want to maximize this roster.

Los Angeles Chargers

Just like the Ravens, it's been quiet for the Los Angeles Chargers even though the team has cap space to work with. The team lost Poona Ford in the trenches who was a key contributor to this pass rush and Teair Tart could be next. Armstead could be a capable upgrade if the team wants to make a solid move since Jim Harbaugh loves winning football games in the trenches.

Patrick Mekari, Jacksonville Jaguars, Agree to Contract

Mekari spent the 2024 season bouncing around a shifting Ravens offensive line. Playing tackle and guard, the California product finished the season with a 59.0 PFF grade, the 50th-best mark out of 76 eligible guards, but it's worth noting that grade is artificially deflated due to him playing out of position for part of the season. Mekari's versatility played a pivotal role in helping the Ravens win the AFC North. However, their dreams of a championship ended when they lost a heartbreaker to the Buffalo Bills in the divisional round.

Patrick Mekari originally entered the league as an undrafted free agent following the 2019 NFL Draft. Signing with the Baltimore Ravens, the California product appeared in 11 games while making five starts. Led by second-year quarterback Lamar Jackson, the Ravens finished the season with the best record in the AFC but went one-and-done in the playoffs following an upset defeat against the Tennessee Titans.

Mekari returned to a reserve role in the COVID-impacted 2020 season. Missing two games thanks to the pandemic, the second-year pro appeared in 14 games while making eight starts. He earned a larger role in 2021, starting in 12 games while making 13 starts. Unfortunately, the Ravens couldn't make the playoffs following a late-season injury to Lamar Jackson.

Despite his strong play, Mekari returned to a do-everything backup role in 2022 and 2023. Appearing in a combined 33 games while making 11 starts, the undrafted free agent played well when given the opportunity.

Since signing his rookie contract, Patrick Mekari has appeared in 88 games while making 53 starts. While on the field, the California product has made the playoffs but has yet to win or appear in a Super Bowl.

Dyami Brown, Jacksonville Jaguars, Agree to Contract

After failing to establish himself through his first three seasons, Dyami Brown had his best season under rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels and first-year head coach Dan Quinn. Appearing in 16 games while making three starts, the speedy wide receiver finished the season with 30 receptions for 308 yards and one touchdown. While these numbers aren't too impressive, he came alive in the postseason. During Washington's three-game run, the fourth-year pro recorded a combined 14 receptions for 229 yards and a touchdown. Unfortunately, the team's magical run came to a close following a blowout loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Dyami Brown originally entered the league as a third-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Selected by the Washington Football Team, the North Carolina product struggled to establish himself with poor quarterback play. After Ryan Fitzpatrick suffered a season-ending injury in Week 1, veteran backup Taylor Heinicke became the team's primary starter. As a rookie, Brown finished his inaugural season with 12 receptions for 165 yards and no touchdowns on 25 targets.

Washington added Carson Wentz in 2022, but the former first-round pick couldn't hold on to the starting job for the entire season. Catching passes from both Wentz and Heinicke, Brown finished his second season with just five receptions on 14 targets. However, he made those catches count, as he turned those limited opportunities into 143 yards and two touchdowns.

The Commanders changed quarterbacks again in 2023, placing their faith in former fifth-round pick Sam Howell. While Howell's rocket arm played to Brown's strengths, the wide receiver still failed to make an impact. During his 17 games on the field, Brown recorded 12 receptions for 168 yards and one touchdown on 23 targets.

Since signing his rookie contract, Dyami Brown has recorded 59 receptions for 784 yards and four touchdowns.

The Dallas Cowboys had a rough season in 2024, but Jourdan Lewis had one of the best seasons of his career. Appearing in 16 games while making 13 starts, the veteran finished the season with one interception, eight passes defended, one sack, 71 tackles, three tackles-for-loss, two quarterback hits, and a 71.7 PFF grade, the 29th-best mark out of 116 eligible players. Despite his impressive play, a seemingly endless line of injuries kept the Cowboys from the playoffs and led to head coach Mike McCarthy's departure following the season.

Jourdan Lewis originally entered the league as a third-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. Selected by the Dallas Cowboys, the Michigan product played a key role on the team right out of the gate. Appearing in 15 games while making seven starts, the rookie finished his inaugural campaign with one interception, 10 passes defended, 54 tackles, two tackles-for-loss, and a 72.0 PFF grade. The Cowboys themselves finished with a 9-7 record, but that wasn't enough to put the team in the playoffs.

Jourdan Lewis continued in a similar role over the next three seasons before signing a contract extension in March of 2021. The cornerback rewarded this faith with another reliable season, appearing in 16 games while making 13 starts and recording three interceptions 11 passes defended, 1.4 sacks, 61 tackles, one tackle-for-loss, and three quarterback hits. The interceptions and passes defended remain career highs and his play helped the team make the playoffs. Unfortunately, Dallas lost in the Wild Card Round to the San Francisco 49ers.

Since signing his rookie contract, Jourdan Lewis has appeared in 115 games while making 64 starts. During his time on the field, the Michigan product recorded 10 interceptions, 44 passes defended, 9.5 sacks, 386 tackles, 19 tackles-f0r-loss, and 10 quarterback hits.
