According to a report, the running back is struggling to find a new home but as the NFL Draft is next month, it's possible that Dobbins could be in a uniform sooner rather than later. Originally selected in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, the former Ohio State product began his journey with the Baltimore Ravens but didn't make much of an exploding impact due to injuries. Dobbins hasn't been able to stay healthy which was a reason why the Ravens let him go along with Gus Edwards.

The running back got another opportunity in Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh's philosophy of running the football. While he had a lot of bright spots lighting up the field reuniting with Gus Edwards, both of these backfield pieces haven't been able to stay healthy. Dobbins missed some playing time last year and even though he had some breakout moments, it wasn't enough for the organization to bring him back. Instead, the Chargers are signing Najee Harris who fits a little more into their offensive scheme.

Dobbins is still a capable starter in this league but at this point, he might have to settle for a backup role in these five teams next season.

Top Chargers Free Agent JK Dobbins May Receive Interest Soon - Who Could Emerge as a Fit?

Possible Destinations

Baltimore Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens don't necessarily need a running back this offseason but they could use one for depth. Keaton Mitchell made his return last year but he was nothing special attempting to hold stomping grounds for star Derrick Henry. Justice Hill is more of a "dump off" pass catcher but the team reuniting with Dobbins is possible. He won't start but it gives the Ravens another backfield piece to keep moving the chains.

New Orleans Saints

Meanwhile, the Saints have yet to address the depth of their running back department as well. After releasing Jamaal Williams this offseason, the team needs a capable backup to help Alvin Kamara maintain stability and be fresh whenever the quarterback gives him the ball. Kendre Miller will probably cut this 2025 season too if he doesn't improve but the experience that Dobbins has can change the course of this run game.

Dallas Cowboys

It's becoming more clear that the Dallas Cowboys aren't selecting a running back in this year's NFL Draft. Since signing Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders, the team has enough talent to move the ball after losing Rico Dowdle to the Panthers. Many should expect the team to probably draft an offensive lineman which means signing Dobbins on a one-year deal wouldn't hurt to give the run game three-headed speedsters.

Denver Broncos

The Broncos couldn't get anything going in their running back unit last season. Quarterback Bo Nix was passing the game than anticipated which makes sense why Javonte Williams left. Denver could look for a new running back for depth while they establish Audric Estime and Jaleel McLaughlin, so the presence of Dobbins could help to be a consistent ball handler.

Carolina Panthers

Even though the team is signing Rico Dowdle in place of Jonathan Brooks after his injury last year. The Panthers need a capable backup for Chuba Hubbard who will be their starter for the foreseeable future since his recent contract extension. Dobbins would be the perfect replacement after releasing Miles Sanders who could provide relief for Hubbard.

Engram, a former first-round pick, spent the 2024 season with the Jacksonville Jaguars but also played for the New York Giants.

Evan Engram, Denver Broncos, Agree to Contract

The Jacksonville Jaguars struggled through the 2024 season, but Evan Engram had a solid season despite the chaos. While injuries limited him to just nine games, the veteran still recorded 47 receptions for 365 yards, one touchdown, and a 74.5 PFF grade, the 12th-best mark out of 74 eligible players. Unfortunately, this wasn't enough to save head coach Doug Pederson's job, and new head coach Liam Coen decided to release the veteran ahead of the 2025 league year.

Evan Engram originally entered the league as a first-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. Selected by the New York Giants, the Mississippi product began his career on a high note. Appearing in 15 games while making 11 starts, the rookie finished his inaugural season with 64 receptions for 722 yards and six touchdowns on 115 targets. Despite his efforts, the Giants could not make the playoffs.

The Giants fired Ben McAdoo midway through the 2017 season and Engram never truly found a home with head coaches Pat Shurmur and Joe Judge. While he made the Pro Bowl in 2020 with a 63-catch, 654-yard season, he ultimately finished his Giants tenure on a low note. In 2021, the tight end appeared in 15 games and recorded just 46 receptions for 408 yards and three touchdowns.

Now a free agent, Evan Engram signed a new contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2022 offseason. This proved to be a great investment, as the former first-round pick recorded 73 receptions for 766 yards and four touchdowns while helping Trevor Lawrence and company make the playoffs and pull off a fantastic comeback in the Wild Card Round. He was even better in 2023, making the Pro Bowl while recording 114 receptions for 963 yards and four touchdowns.

2025 NFL Quarterback Class Opens Door for Under-The-Radar Positions To Dominate Draft Chatter https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/03/11/nfl-quarterback-drought-opens-door-for-under-the-radar-positions-to-dominate-draft-chatter/ https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/03/11/nfl-quarterback-drought-opens-door-for-under-the-radar-positions-to-dominate-draft-chatter/#respond Tue, 11 Mar 2025 20:11:42 +0000 https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/?p=221999 The NFL draft is usually a quarterback lovefest—think The Bachelor finale, but with more playbooks and less rose-giving. This year? The 2025 Quarterback class cupboard feels emptier than a nacho platter at a Super Bowl party. With no surefire franchise saviors hogging the spotlight, positions like defensive line, tight end, and even safety are crashing the first-round conversation like uninvited guests who end up stealing the show.

Welcome to the 2025 draft, where “Who’s that?” might just be the most asked question. While teams scramble to find the next Patrick Mahomes, the real drama lies in the trenches and beyond. Think of it like Stranger Things shifting focus from Hawkins High to the Upside Down—less obvious, but way more intriguing.

Quarterback carousel spins into uncertainty

The New York Jets’ signing of Justin Fields feels less like a grand romance and more like a rebound fling. After 14 straight playoff misses and a messy breakup with Aaron Rodgers, Gang Green tossed Fields a two-year, $40 million “prove it” deal. But let’s be real: Fields’ résumé—4-2 as a Steelers starter last year, 16 career fumbles in 2022—is about as reliable as a TikTok weather forecast. Yet here we are.

The 2025 Quarterback class? It’s thinner than the plot of Riverdale’s final season. Scouts are lukewarm on Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders and Miami’s Cam Ward, while Alabama’s Jalen Milroe and Ole Miss’ Jaxson Dart feel like lottery tickets with scratch-off odds. Hence, this isn’t a group that’ll have GMs sprinting to the podium. So, what’s a Quarterback-needy team to do?

The Jets, for example, are betting on Fields’ legs (1,143 rushing yards in 2022) and a young supporting cast featuring Garrett Wilson and Breece Hall. But if this experiment flops? Cue the Curb Your Enthusiasm theme—it’s back to the drawing board for a franchise that’s mastered the art of disappointment.

While the Jets’ Fields experiment grabs headlines, other Quarterback-needy teams are navigating the draft’s murky waters with varying strategies. The Pittsburgh Steelers, left scrambling after Fields’ exit, are eyeing a reunion with Russell Wilson or Aaron Rodgers. While flirting with trade targets like New England’s Joe Milton—a raw but rocket-armed project buried behind Drake Maye.

Speaking of the Patriots, they’re all-in on Maye as their franchise cornerstone. As they leave Milton as trade bait despite his untapped potential. Meanwhile, the Tennessee Titans (picking first overall) face a dilemma: reach for a shaky Quarterback prospect like Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders, or snag Penn State’s generational pass-rusher Abdul Carter and kick the Quarterback can down the road.

Even teams like the Saints and Rams, lurking in the mid-rounds, are gambling on developmental options. Options like Tyler Shough or Jaxson Dart—proof that in a Quarterback drought, desperation and creativity go hand in hand.

Defensive Linemen Steal the Spotlight

If quarterbacks are the draft’s main course, this year’s defensive line class is the loaded nachos you can’t stop eating. Penn State’s Abdul Carter, a 6’3”, 250-pound edge rusher with a stress fracture and a top-five grade, headlines a group so deep it could fill a Marvel ensemble. Georgia’s Mykel Williams (6’6”, 260 lbs) and Texas A&M’s Shemar Stewart (4.67-second 40-yard dash at 267 lbs) bring Black Panther-level athleticism, while Michigan’s Mason Graham anchors the interior like a fridge full of bricks.

“You can’t have enough good ones,” Bears GM Ryan Poles said, referencing the Eagles’ D-line dominance in Super Bowl 59. Eleven defensive linemen could go in Round 1—a tidal wave of talent that’s forcing teams to rethink their boards. Even Colorado’s Travis Hunter, the two-way unicorn, is getting CB1 buzz despite playing receiver 50% of the time.

Meanwhile, Shedeur Sanders’ draft stock is slipping faster than a grocery bag with a hole. Critics point to his “uneasy” pocket presence, but Kurt Warner offered context: "I just want to see him more solid in the pocket and the ability to process quickly so he doesn't have to get uneasy after first look and go create a throw. To stay in there, see it, understand it, and get the ball out a little bit more on time than I saw."

When you’ve been sacked 94 times in two years, wouldn’t you twitch? Behind Colorado’s Swiss cheese O-line, Sanders’ toughness (playing through injections, per Deion Sanders) might be his best selling point. Besides, this draft isn’t about finding a hero...

It’s about building a roster that can survive without one. With Quarterbacks stuck in purgatory, teams are stockpiling defensive monsters, versatile tight ends (Penn State’s Tyler Warren is this year’s Gronk-lite), and hybrid playmakers. The Jets’ Fields gamble? It’s a subplot in a bigger story.

In a year without a Caleb Williams, you either get creative or get left behind. So grab your popcorn. The 2025 Quarterback class might lack star power, but the chaos? That’s must-see TV.

Dre Greenlaw, Denver Broncos, Agree to Contract

The fact that Dre Greenlaw played at all in 2024 is nothing short of miraculous. After tearing his Achilles in the 2023 Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, the Arkansas product spent most of the season rehabilitating his injury before making his return to the field in mid-December. Playing in two games, the linebacker finished the season with nine tackles. However, the 49ers shut him down once their playoff hopes disappeared.

Dre Greenlaw originally entered the league as a fifth-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Selected by the San Francisco 49ers, the Arkansas product immediately outplayed his draft stock. Starting in 11 games while making 16 appearances, the rookie finished his inaugural season with 92 tackles, three tackles-for-loss, two quarterback hits, and two passes defended. The 49ers made it to the Super Bowl during that magical season but narrowly lost to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.

Greenlaw proved his rookie breakout was no fluke in 2020. During the COVID season, the linebacker appeared in 13 games while recording one sack, 86 tackles, seven tackles-for-loss, and two quarterback hits. Injuries limited him to just three games in 2021, but he returned with a vengeance in 2022.

Starting and appearing in 15 games, Greenlaw recorded a career-high 127 tackles, three tackles-for-loss, one interception, and six passes defended. The 49ers made it to the NFC Championship Game but fell to the Philadelphia Eagles after quarterback Brock Purdy suffered an elbow injury early in the contest.

Since signing his rookie contract, Dre Greenlaw has appeared in 64 games while making 56 starts. While on the field, the former fifth-round pick has recorded 455 tackles, 18 tackles-for-loss, nine quarterback hits, three interceptions, and 3.5 sacks.

Williams, a former second-round pick, spent the entirety of his career with the Denver Broncos.

[embed]https://bsky.app/profile/fantasynflnews.bsky.social/post/3lk2opmofck25[/embed]

Javonte Williams, Dallas Cowboys, Agree to Contract

The 2024 season was something of a mixed bag for Javonte Williams. While he stayed healthy for the full 17-game season, the North Carolina product wasn't overly effective in Sean Payton's offense. Starting in 11 games, Williams finished the season with 513 yards and four rushing touchdowns on 139 carries (3.7 yards per attempt) to go along with 52 receptions for 346 yards. With Williams' help, the Broncos made it to the playoffs with first-round pick Bo Nix, but they lost to the Buffalo Bills in the Wild Card round.

Javonte Williams originally entered the league as a second-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Selected by the Denver Broncos, the rookie began his career in a timeshare with veteran Melvin Gordon. Appearing in all 17 games, Williams finished his inaugural season with 903 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 203 attempts to go along with 316 yards and three touchdowns on 43 receptions, good for a combined 1,219 yards from scrimmage.

Following his promising rookie season, Williams had the opportunity to become the clear-cut three-down back in 2023. Unfortunately, the second-year pro suffered a season-ending injury after just four games, limiting him to just 47 attempts for 204 yards and 16 receptions for 76 yards.

Williams returned to the field in 2023 but lacked the same burst as before his injury. Appearing in 16 games while making 13 starts, the running back finished the season with 774 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 217 attempts. He also added 47 receptions for 228 yards and two touchdowns through the air as Denver missed the playoffs for the third time in his three seasons with the team.

Since signing his rookie contract, Javonte Williams has appeared in 54 games while making 29 starts. While on the field, the second-round pick has recorded 606 carries for 2,394 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Javonte Williams, Dallas Cowboys, Agree to Contract

The 2024 season was something of a mixed bag for Javonte Williams. While he stayed healthy for the full 17-game season, the North Carolina product wasn’t overly effective in Sean Payton’s offense. Starting in 11 games, Williams finished the season with 513 yards and four rushing touchdowns on 139 carries (3.7 yards per attempt) to go along with 52 receptions for 346 yards. With Williams’ help, the Broncos made it to the playoffs with first-round pick Bo Nix, but they lost to the Buffalo Bills in the Wild Card round.

Wilson, a former first-round pick, spent the 2024 season with the Denver Broncos but has also played for the New York Jets.

Zach Wilson, Miami Dolphins, Agree to Contract

After spending his first three seasons as the primary starting quarterback for the New York Jets, Wilson spent the 2024 season with the Denver Broncos. Serving as a depth option behind first-round rookie Bo Nix and veteran Jarrett Stidham, Wilson never saw the field. Despite his absence, the team made it to the playoffs but lost in the Wild Card round to the Buffalo Bills.

Zach Wilson originally entered the league as a first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Selected by the New York Jets, the BYU product immediately earned the starting job for Gang Green. Starting and appearing in 13 games, the veteran finished the season with a 3-10 record while completing 55.6% of his passes for 2,334 yards, nine touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.

Wilson maintained the starting job in 2022 but didn't hold onto it before the entire season. Starting in nine games, the Jets went 5-4 with Wilson under center, but they weren't successful because of him. The quarterback completed just 54.5% of his passes for 1,688 yards, six touchdowns, and seven interceptions and was ultimately benched for backup Mike White.

The New York Jets acquired four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers ahead of the 2023 season and planned on keeping Wilson on the bench. That plan went up in flames after four snaps, as Rodgers tore his Achilles and forced Wilson into action. The quarterback still struggled, going 4-7 in 11 starts while completing 60.1% of his passes for 2,271 yards, eight touchdowns, and seven interceptions.

Since signing his rookie contract, Zach Wilson has appeared in 34 games while making 33 starts. While on the field, the BYU product has completed 57.0% of his passes for 6,293 yards, 23 touchdowns, and 25 interceptions.

Cody Barton, Tennessee Titans, Agree to Contract

After signing a modest one-year contract with the Denver Broncos, Cody Barton starred on one of the league's best defenses in 2024. Appearing in all 17 games while making 14 starts, Barton finished his first year in Mile High with two interceptions, five passes defended, 1.5 sacks, 106 tackles, two tackles-for-loss, two quarterback hits, and a 63.7 PFF grade, the 46th-best mark out of 84 eligible players. With his help, the Denver Broncos made the playoffs but went one-and-done following a blowout loss to the Buffalo Bills.

Cody Barton originally entered the league as a third-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Selected by the Seattle Seahawks, the Utah product needed some time to make a name for himself. While Barton appeared in all 16 games as a rookie, he only made two starts while recording 23 tackles and one pass defended. He continued seeing backup work in 2020 and 2021 but finally broke out in the final year of his rookie deal.

Earning a starting job, Cody Barton became a key piece of the 2022 Seattle Seahawks defense. Appearing in all 17 games, the former third-round pick finished his season with two interceptions, six passes defended, two sacks, 136 tackles, four tackles-for-loss, two quarterback hits, and a 56.6 PFF grade. With his help, the Seahawks made a surprise playoff appearance but lost to the San Francisco 49ers in the Wild Card round.

Cody Barton turned his breakout season into a one-year contract with the Washington Commanders. While a high-ankle sprain limited him to just 13 games, he still recorded one interception, 121 tackles, three tackles-for-loss, and a 53.9 PFF grade while on the field.

Talanoa Hufanga, Denver  Broncos, Agree to Contract

After tearing his ACL midway through the 2023 season, Talanoa Hufanga spent the majority of the 2024 season trying to get back on his feet. The USC product eventually made his way back to the field, starting and appearing in seven games while recording 38 tackles, two tackles-for-loss, and a 57.8 PFF grade, the 74th-best mark out of 98 eligible players. While these numbers aren't overly impressive, it's important to note he was working his way back from injury and didn't look like his regular self throughout the season.

Talanoa Hufanga originally entered the league as a fifth-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Selected by the San Francisco 49ers, the USC product spent the majority of his rookie season in a backup role. Appearing in 15 games while making three starts, the rookie showed promise while recording 32 tackles, one tackle-f0r-loss, and one quarterback hit. With his help, the 49ers made it to the NFC Championship Game but narrowly lost to the Los Angeles Rams.

Hufanga broke out in a big way in 2022. Stepping into a full-time starting role, the former fifth-round pick finished the season with four interceptions, nine passes defended, two sacks, 97 tackles, five tackles-for-loss, three quarterback hits, and a 72.1 PFF grade while earning Pro Bowl and First-Team All-Pro honors. Once again, his team made it to the NFC Championship Game but lost after quarterback Brock Purdy suffered an elbow injury early against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The aforementioned ACL injury limited Hufanga to just 10 games and three interceptions in 2023. Since signing his rookie contract. Talanoa Hufanga has appeared in 49 games while making 27 starts. While on the field, the fifth-round pick has recorded seven interceptions, 14 passes defended, two sacks, 219 tackles, nine tackles-for-loss, and six quarterback hits.

Jones has signed a new contract with the Denver Broncos. Jones, a former sixth-round pick, spent the 2024 season with the Denver Broncos but has also played for the San Francisco 49ers.

https://twitter.com/jfowlerespn/status/1898949065204781354?s=46

D.J. Jones, Denver Broncos, Agree to Contract

Entering the season with low expectations, the Denver Broncos made a surprising trip to the playoffs due in part to Jones' strong play. Anchoring one of the best front sevens in the league, the longtime veteran started all 17 games while recording one sack, three passes defended, 42 tackles, one tackle-for-loss, three quarterback hits, and a 67.3 PFF grade, the 33rd-best out of 118 eligible players. The Broncos earned the final AFC playoff spot but ultimately fell to Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills in the Wild Card round.

D.J. Jones originally entered the league as a sixth-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. Selected by the San Francisco 49ers, the Mississippi product didn't see the field much as a rookie and only played situationally. Making his way into nine games without recording a start, Jones finished his inaugural campaign with 10 tackles, one tackle-for-loss, and no sacks. He remained a rotational player in 2018, although his role grew marginally down the stretch.

After his two quiet seasons, Jones earned a starting spot in 2019 and never looked back. Starting and appearing in 11 games, the veteran recorded two sacks, 23 tackles, four tackles-for-loss, two quarterback hits, and a 67.8 PFF grade during his first season with meaningful playing time. Unfortunately, a high-ankle sprain sidelined him for the later part of the regular season and he had to watch as the 49ers went on to lose the Super Bowl to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Following two additional solid seasons in San Francisco, Jones signed a three-year contract with the Denver Broncos in 2022. This proved to be a wise investment, as Jones played well during his first year in the Centennial State. Unfortunately, his solid play couldn't overcome Russell Wilson's disappointing performance.
