Cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. stands at the crossroads, his cleats tapping to a rhythm all his own. Son of a two-time Super Bowl champion, he carries a name heavier than a linebacker’s handshake. But the road ahead isn’t about legacy.

It’s about carving his path under the neon glow of New Orleans jazz or the sun-baked skies of Arizona. In 1986, the NFL saw its (arguably) first father-son duo drafted (Clay Matthews Jr. and Clay Matthews Sr.). The torch passes quietly, like a halftime playbook. Samuel Jr. grew up shadowboxing expectations, his father’s highlights flickering like an old VHS tape. Now, free agency whispers his name like a late-night sports radio call-in show. Teams circle. Stories unfold.

Samuel Carving His Own Legacy

Cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. isn’t chasing ghosts. He's not here to fill someone else’s shoes. But lacing up his own. His stats sing a defiant tune: 6 interceptions, 37 pass breakups, and a coverage grade sharper than a Louisiana gumbo spice. Last season’s shoulder injury? Just a comma, not a period. Meanwhile, the Saints defense, once a Mardi Gras parade of chaos, now hums with purpose.

Trading Marshon Lattimore left a hole wider than the Mississippi. Enter Samuel, a cover artist who dances with receivers like a saxophonist trading riffs. Coach Brandon Staley, his old Chargers skipper, knows his rhythm. But New Orleans’ salary cap woes loom like storm clouds over Bourbon Street. Can they afford his $45 million encore?

The math feels tighter than a fourth-quarter blitz. Yet hope flickers—restructured deals, creative contracts, and a fanbase hungry for redemption. One thing’s certain: The Saints' defense needs a new anthem.

The Saints’ Defensive Symphony

Imagine Drew Brees’ precision meeting Deion Sanders’ swagger. That’s the vibe New Orleans craves. Safety Tyrann Mathieu, the Honey Badger, prowls the secondary like a blues legend, while Justin Reid’s arrival adds steel. But the cornerback room? Thin as a beignet’s sugar dust. Samuel’s coverage skills could turn whispers into roars.

Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report nailed it: “The best fits for Samuel might be teams that could use a coverage specialist and have some familiarity with the player. The Commanders and Saints happen to fit. New Orleans could use a quality cover corner after trading Marshon Lattimore at last year's trade deadline.” Is his 87.8 passer rating allowed since 2022?

Poetry in motion. Yet doubts linger. That shoulder injury sidelined him like a busted jukebox last year. Can he stay healthy under the Superdome’s bright lights?

The answer might lie in Kellen Moore’s playbook. Moore, now Saints head coach, schemed magic with Samuel in L.A. as their OC. Besides, Samuel's a chess piece. You move him where the offense ain’t. But checkmate could come cheap—or cost a king’s ransom. Meanwhile, Arizona’s air hangs dry with possibility.

Cardinals’ Desert Gambit

The Cardinals, long haunted by a Lombardi Trophy drought older than Route 66, crave a defensive ace. Samuel visited Thursday, his shadow stretching across the Sonoran Desert. “I love Asante,” ex-GM Steve Keim once said. “A lot of people think he’s probably in the second round because he’s 5-(foot)-10, which they think automatically that’s probably a nickel or a slot corner… I don’t agree with that. I think that he plays big, he can play outside, he can play inside.”

Arizona’s cornerback corps? Solid, but unspectacular. Sean Murphy-Bunting holds steady; Garrett Williams shines in the slot. But Samuel’s ballhawk instincts could electrify a defense rising like a phoenix. His 2023 wild-card performance—three picks against Trevor Lawrence—still echoes. The Cardinals’ pitch?

Wide-open spaces and a chance to star. No cap nightmares here—just $18.69 million post Derek Carr's contract restructure. Samuel could anchor a secondary blending of youth and grit, his name etched alongside Budda Baker’s. Arizona’s rebuild hums like a desert highway: long, and lonely, but leading somewhere new.

Two teams. Two visions. Cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. stands at the axis, his choice rippling through the NFL’s tapestry. New Orleans offers redemption under cathedral spires; Arizona promises reinvention beneath endless skies. His father’s rings gleam in the rearview, but the road ahead? All his.

Legacy isn’t inherited—it’s earned. For Samuel, the next chapter reads like a Springsteen lyric: gritty, relentless, and unapologetically his own. Whether he chooses jazz or desert rock, one thing’s clear—the NFL’s jukebox just got a new anthem.

REPORT: Cardinals Hosted Best Available Free Agent – Ravens, Saints, Cowboys Likely to Intervene https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/03/13/report-cardinals-hosted-best-available-free-agent-asante-samuel-ravens-saints-cowboys-likely-to-intervene/ https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/03/13/report-cardinals-hosted-best-available-free-agent-asante-samuel-ravens-saints-cowboys-likely-to-intervene/#respond Fri, 14 Mar 2025 01:01:13 +0000 https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/?p=222662 The Arizona Cardinals hosted the best available defender free agent Asante Samuel Jr. for a visit this week. According to reports, the team is looking into signing Samuel to bolster their secondary unit after spending the last few seasons with the Chargers. Originally selected in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft, the former Florida State product was one of the favorites for former Arizona general manager Steven Keim that year. Samuel has yet to find a home this free agency but after a few potential visits after the Cardinals, he could soon sign with a new team as he didn't work out with the Chargers.

Last season, he wasn't able to stay healthy for the entire 2024 campaign after just missing four games with an injury. Samuel has been working as a boundary corner for the team's secondary but as he's entering age 26, many could argue he's in the prime of his career since typically he's still young. The Chargers signing Donte Jackson and Benjamin St-Juste may signal he would need to sign a contract elsewhere. Even though Samuel made an impact in the 2023 postseason helping the Chargers build a 27-point margin, it wasn't enough to bring home the win.

While the Cardinals could have other options on the table, there's still time for Samuel to receive more interest which is why the Ravens, Saints and Cowboys could intervene in the negotiation talks.

REPORT: Cardinals Hosted Asante Samuel Jr. - Ravens, Saints, Cowboys Likely to Intervene

Marcus Williams' Replacement

The Baltimore Ravens are closer to Super Bowl contention than anyone thinks. Last season, the team wasn't able to reach at least an AFC Championship but after signing wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins, the Ravens could have enough armory to help them lead. Quarterback Lamar Jackson has the arm to get them there but as they lost Zay Flowers last postseason, they had to settle with Rashod Bateman and Nelson Agholor taking on a bigger role since Diontae Johnson didn't work out.

Despite that, the secondary was one of the main reasons why the team lost the majority of their matchups. However, John Harbaugh made a critical switch by benching Marcus Williams in favor of Ar'Darius Washington. Williams is gone as expected so that means it's up to Kyle Hamilton and Washington to have big-time roles. Samuel won't start but he could be a useful rotational man as a slot safety.

Other Fits

Even with the bare minimum salary cap, the New Orleans Saints found a way to sign Justin Reid this offseason to a three-year deal. After restructuring Tyrann Mathieu's contract, the team seems to be solid in the safety unit but the cornerback position is bleak. While Samuel is no cornerback, the Saints could use the depth at the position. Mathieu is aging and he's entering the final year of his contract and Samuel could easily take his spot if he decides to retire after the season.

For the Dallas Cowboys, it's hard to envision what type of future Donovan Wilson has. He's a cut candidate this offseason, especially after giving Markquese Bell a three-year deal. Malik Hooker is entering the final year of his deal so they could use someone like Samuel as a temporary starter for the team's safety unit.

In the first week of free agency, the Cardinals have been aggressive, adding big-name players to their ranks, especially on the defensive side of the ball. As the rush of free agency begins to fade, it’s time to look forward to how the Arizona Cardinals moves might affect their strategy in the upcoming NFL Draft.

How the Arizona Cardinals Free Agency Shakes up the NFL Draft

Arizona Cardinals Free Agent Signings

Arizona hit the ground running in free agency, addressing weak points in their roster with aggressive signings. First, Arizona secured one of the top pass rushers on the market in Josh Sweat. Sweat made a name for himself in the Philadelphia Eagles playoff run, sacking Patrick Mahomes three times in the Super Bowl. The Cardinals inked Sweat to a four-year, $76 million deal with $41 million guaranteed. Arizona has lacked a premier pass rusher for years. Zaven Collins led the team in sacks last season with just five. No Cardinals player has eclipsed the ten-sack mark since J.J. Watt did it in 2022. Now, they have a dangerous force on the edge who is just entering his prime.

While Josh Sweat has been the Arizona Cardinals only blockbuster signing in free agency, they have made other moves to fill out the roster. Former Browns defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson signed a two-year, $29 million contract with Arizona, effectively replacing the Detroit-bound Roy Lopez. An eight-year veteran, Tomlinson will be a quality fixture in the Cardinals defensive front.

Along with their signings on the defensive line, Arizona made low-cost moves to add depth to their roster. The Cardinals signed Jacoby Brissett to a two-year deal to back up Kyler Murray at quarterback. Linebacker Akeem Davis-Gaither is joining the ranks as well, signing a two-year deal worth $10 million.

Arizona Cardinals Draft Needs

Heading into free agency, the Arizona Cardinals were in desperate need of help on the defensive line. However, after signing Josh Sweat and Dalvin Tomlinson, Arizona may be freed up to target other positions in the NFL Draft. On offense, the Cardinals could stand to add talent up front. While pieces like Jonah Williams, Evan Brown, and Isaiah Adams have been passable in their play, Cardinals fans would welcome upgrades at those positions. The 2025 NFL Draft class is loaded with versatile offensive linemen who could play either tackle or guard. Arizona may look to take one of these players with their first-round pick.

While the defensive line may be fixed, the Cardinals still need help in the secondary. Sean Murphy-Bunting, Garrett Williams, and Max Melton have all been solid contributors for this defense. However, Arizona lacks a true shutdown presence on the back end. Jonathan Gannon has been forced to employ unconventional coverage schemes due to the lack of one-on-one ability in his defense.

The Cardinals could look to address that issue in this year’s draft. In the middle of the first round, defensive stars like Will Johnson and Jahdae Barron could be available. By targeting the defensive secondary in the draft, Arizona could create the most balanced roster they’ve had in years.

Detroit Lions Pick Up Nose Tackle in Free Agency https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/03/12/detroit-lions-pick-up-roy-lopez-in-free-agency/ https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/03/12/detroit-lions-pick-up-roy-lopez-in-free-agency/#respond Wed, 12 Mar 2025 18:54:02 +0000 https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/?p=221884

According to Tom Pellisero, the Lions are signing former Arizona Cardinals nose tackle Roy Lopez. The $4.65 million, one-year contract gives the Lions another strong tackle to shore up their injury-depleted defense.

Detroit Lions Pick Up Roy Lopez In Free Agency

After playing football at New Mexico State, Lopez transferred to Arizona in 2020 for his final year of eligibility. A four-year veteran of the NFL, Lopez was drafted by the Houston Texans in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL draft with the 195th selection.

Roy Lopez -A Strong Defensive Talent In Arizona

After two years in Texas, Lopez was waived/injured in August 2023. He was signed to the Cardinals practice squad the following month and quickly promoted to the 53-man roster within a week. In 2024 Lopez had nine solo tackles, one assisted tackle, one sack, three pass defenses, and a forced fumble.

What Lopez Brings to the Lions

With the unsigned status of free agents Levi Onwuzurike and Kyle Peko in question, Lopez’s acquisition looks like another smart move by Lions GM Brad Holmes.

Described as a “perfect Dan Campbell type of player,” the 6'2" 318 lb. Lopez is gritty, tough, and relentless in his playing style. A popular locker room presence in Arizona, those who know Lopez say he will fit in well with the team.

HC Jonathan Gannon said of Lopez.  "He’s a phenomenal human being. He enjoys coming to work and he gets better at his game. I’d love a bunch of Roys."

But Lopez suddenly became expendable following the Cardinals' budget-busting acquisition of free agent Josh Sweat from the Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles. Wooing Sweat with a four-year $76.4 million contract, the Cardinals announced their presence in the free agency fray.

Next Steps For the Lions

Detroit has remained relatively quiet this week compared to the huge spending sprees exhibited by other NFL teams. On the first day of free agency, the Chicago Bears spent an eye-popping $133 million to acquire three players. Other teams, including the Carolina Panthers, shelled out the big bucks to retain core players. The Panthers secured Jaycee Horn for the next four years with a massive $100 million contract. The New Orleans Saints re-signed Juwan Johnson for $30 million over three years and elite EDGE Chase Young for the next three years with a new $51 million contract.

Meanwhile, Holmes has kept his cards close to the vest, picking up only one additional free agent besides Lopez.  Earlier this week, the Lions acquired former Jets cornerback D.J. Reed with a three-year $48 million contract. The pickup of Reed is considered to be another home run for Holmes. However, in addition to the acquisition of Lopez and Reed, the Lions have largely stayed out of the feeding frenzy, focusing their efforts on quietly re-signing their internal players including defensive linebacker Marcus Davenport, LB Zeke Turner, and fan-favorite tackle, Dan Skipper.

With Holmes' typical quiet efficiency, the details of their new contracts have not been publicized. However, with big contract re-signings still outstanding for Lions' premiere talents including Aidan Hutchinson, Alex Anzalone, and Kerby Joseph, Holmes is likely keeping an eye on his budget.

But trust the Lions front office will re-sign these players very soon. Then Holmes can focus his on doing what he does best; spotting underrated top talent at the upcoming NFL draft and signing them to Detroit.

Signing a one-year deal with the team, Brissett was supposed to give New England adequate play at the quarterback position while first-round pick Drake Maye developed on the sidelines. This plan lasted all of five games, as Brissett struggled behind a poor offensive line and unreliable weapons. In total, the quarterback made five starts while completing 59% of his passes for 826 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception.

Brissett originally entered the league as a third-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. Selected by the Patriots, the North Carolina State product entered the league as the third quarterback on the depth chart. However, he had to start in two games after Tom Brady received a suspension and backup Jimmy Garoppolo suffered an injury. While on the field, the rookie completed 61.8% of his passes for 400 yards, no touchdowns, and no interceptions while guiding the team to a 1-1 record.

Despite his success as a rookie, the Patriots traded Brissett to the Indianapolis Colts prior to the 2017 season opener. Filling in for an injured Andrew Luck, Brissett completed 58.8% of his passes for 3,098 yards, 13 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. He returned to his backup role in 2018 but became the primary starter in 2019 following Luck's surprise retirement.

After spending the 2020 season backing up Philip Rivers, Brissett spent the next few seasons bouncing around the league as a high-end backup and bridge quarterback. Since signing his rookie contract, the quarterback has completed 61.1% of his passes for 11,400 yards, 53 touchdowns, and 24 interceptions.

Josh Sweat, Arizona Cardinals, Agree to Contract

The Philadelphia Eagles had one of the league's top front sevens in football, and Josh Sweat played a large role in that success. Starting and appearing in 16 games, the veteran finished the season with eight sacks, 41 tackles, nine tackles-for-loss, 15 quarterback hits, and a 70.0 PFF grade, the 36th-best mark out of 119 eligible players. With his help, the Eagles won the Super Bowl, beating the Kansas City Chiefs by a final score of 40-22.

Josh Sweat originally entered the league as a fourth-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. Selected by the Philadelphia Eagles, the Florida State product hardly saw the field as a rookie. Appearing in nine games without making a start, the rookie finished his inaugural season with just one tackle, one quarterback hit, and no sacks as Philadelphia made the postseason but lost to the New Orleans Saints in the divisional round of the playoffs.

Despite his slow start, Sweat earned a larger role in 2018. Playing situationally, the edge defender appeared in all 16 games without making a start while recording four sacks, 21 tackles, seven tackles-for-loss, and 10 quarterback hits. Once again, the Eagles made the playoffs but failed to go on a deep postseason run.

Sweat remained a situational player in 2020 but finally broke out in 2021. Starting in 13 games, the Florida State product recorded 7.5 sacks, 45 tackles, seven tackles-for-loss, 13 quarterback hits, and a 76.1 PFF grade while making the first Pro Bowl of his career. He proved this wasn't a one-year fluke in 2022 when he recorded 11 sacks, 48 tackles, 15 tackles-for-loss, 23 quarterback hits, and an 83.8 PFF grade. Despite making improvements across the board, he did not make the Pro Bowl for this strong campaign.

Since signing his rookie contract, Josh Sweat has recorded 43 sacks, 237 tackles, 54 tackles-for-loss, and 97 quarterback hits.

Evan Brown, Arizona Cardinals, Agree to Contract

Evan Brown is coming off yet another adequate season. Starting and appearing in all 17 games, the SMU product finished the season with a 65.9 PFF grade, the 30th-best mark out of 77 eligible players. Unfortunately, despite his reliable play, the Arizona Cardinals narrowly missed the playoffs during the second year of the Jonathan Gannon Era.

Brown originally entered the league as an undrafted free agent following the 2019 NFL Draft. Originally making his NFL debut with the New York Giants, Brown bounced around the league before eventually finding a home with the Detroit Lions. After playing a reserve role in 2020, the offensive lineman became a key starter in 2021. Playing 755 snaps at center, Brown finished the year allowing just one sack while drawing four penalties.

The former undrafted free agent proved this strong season wasn't a fluke in 2022. Splitting time between center and right guard, Brown started 12 games for the Lions while recording a 64.8 PFF grade. While Detroit improved in 2022, they narrowly missed the playoffs as Brown left for greener pastures.

Following the season, Evan Brown signed a one-year contract with the Seattle Seahawks. Starting in 16 games at center, the SMU product finished the season with a 55.5 PFF grade. For the second straight season, Brown's team missed the playoffs despite posting a winning record.

Since signing his rookie contract, Evan Brown has appeared in 74 games while making 57 starts at guard and center. While he has a decent amount of experience, he has yet to participate in a playoff game.

Baron Browning, Arizona Cardinals, Agree to Contract

Entering the final year of his rookie contract, Baron Browning spent the 2024 season with two different organizations. Starting the season with the Denver Broncos, the third-round pick played in five games while recording seven tackles and one tackle-for-loss. However, the Broncos traded him to the Arizona Cardinals for a sixth-round pick midway through the season. Browning played a larger role in Arizona, recording two sacks, 14 tackles, four tackles-for-loss, and three quarterback hits in eight games. However, despite his presence, the Cardinals missed the playoffs for the third straight season.

Baron Browning originally entered the league as a third-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Selected by the Denver Broncos, the Ohio State product entered the NFL as a physically gifted specimen who needed to learn the nuances of the position. Browning began his career at inside linebacker and finished his rookie season with 58 tackles, two tackles-for-loss, and one quarterback hit in 14 games. However, Browning moved to edge defender in 2022 when Nathaniel Hackett replaced Vic Fangio as the team's head coach.

Starting in eight games while making 14 appearances, Browning showed some promise on the edge. Playing a key role on one of the league's top defenses, the versatile defender finished the season with five sacks, 23 tackles, eight tackles-for-loss, and 12 quarterback hits. Sean Payton replaced Hackett in 2023, but Browning remained productive. Once again earning a starting role, Browning recorded 4.5 sacks, 25 tackles, four tackles-for-loss, and nine quarterback hits in just 10 games.

Since signing his rookie contract, Baron Browning has appeared in 51 games while making 29 starts. While on the field, the Ohio State product has recorded 11.5 sacks, 128 tackles, 19 tackles-for-loss, and 25 quarterback hits.

Over the next two months, the Arizona Cardinals will dissect a long list of prospects in search of their next stars. With multiple areas of weakness on their roster, Arizona can’t afford to miss, especially in the first round. Mike Kashuba and David Latham of Last Word on Sports and Fantasy Football RPG podcast had the Arizona Cardinals select offensive line prospect Josh Simmons with the 16th overall pick in their latest mock draft.

Arizona Cardinals Take Offensive Lineman Josh Simmons in Mock Draft

Josh Simmons, the former Ohio State left tackle, is considered to be one of the top offensive linemen in this draft class. As Last Word on Sports Ohio State expert Drew Crabtree put it:

“Simmons’ overall body of work and consistent improvement trajectory suggests he has the potential to develop into a Pro Bowl-caliber player in the NFL.”

Simmons has been one of the best pass-protecting tackles in college football over the last two seasons. In his last 600 pass-blocking snaps, he’s allowed just one sack. Though somewhat limited in his run-blocking ability, Simmons has the potential to become one of the best blindside protectors in the NFL. He uses sound technique and footwork to stay in front of both speed-dependent and powerful defenders.

The most consistent cause for concern regarding Simmons’ draft stock is his injury history. Josh Simmons is currently recovering from the patellar tendon injury that ended his 2024 season. At any position, knee injuries can be fatal to the career of an NFL player. NFL teams will want to see that Simmons’ health is on the right trajectory at the NFL Combine and Ohio State’s pro day. If he can show that he is moving towards a complete recovery, Josh Simmons may see his draft stock rise.

Josh Simmons Fit with the Arizona Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals spent a top-ten selection on offensive tackle Paris Johnson Jr. back in 2023. Johnson Jr. has become a staple of Arizona’s front over the last two seasons. While Johnson Jr. played left tackle for the entirety of the 2024 season, he played right tackle in 2023. If the Cardinals draft Josh Simmons, they’ll have the flexibility to play him at either tackle spot.

In 2024, the Arizona Cardinals offensive line performed near league average in pass protection. Kyler Murray was sacked 30 times throughout the season. Jonah Williams filled in well for Arizona at right tackle after signing with the team during the 2024 offseason. However, he hasn’t been consistent enough throughout his career to hold a secure starting position for Arizona.

Though it may not fill Arizona's most glaring need, drafting Josh Simmons would indicate that the Cardinals are committed to building through the trenches. In recent NFL history, the most successful teams have had elite units up front. With Josh Simmons on the roster, the Cardinals would be one step closer to building the dominant offensive line that could set them up for playoff contention.
