Cooper Kupp, Seahawks, Agree to Contract

The 2024 season was a mixed bag for Kupp. While injuries limited him to just 12 games, he remained a productive receiver when on the field, although he never came close to matching his career-best numbers. During his time on the field, the 31-year-old recorded 67 receptions for 710 yards and six touchdowns on 100 targets. The Rams made it to the NFC Divisional Round before narrowly losing to the eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. Following the season, the Rams released Cooper Kupp thanks to his bloated contact, injury history, and the breakout of budding star Puka Nacua.

Cooper Kupp originally entered the league as a third-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. Selected by the Los Angeles Rams, the Eastern Washington product quickly made a name for himself. Appearing in 15 games while making six starts, the wideout finished his inaugural campaign with 62 receptions for 869 yards and five touchdowns. He picked up where he left off in 2018, but suffered a season-ending knee injury after just eight games. Without him, the Rams made it to the Super Bowl but lost to the New England Patriots.

Kupp returned to the field in 2019 and remained a productive playmaker. Showing no signs of injury, the veteran finished the season with 94 receptions for 1,161 yards and 10 touchdowns. After another strong season in 2020, Los Angeles traded Jared Goff to the Detroit Lions for longtime veteran Matthew Stafford.

Stafford and Kupp immediately established a rapport, leading to Kupp's complete dominance in 2021. Leading the league in receptions (145), yards (1,947), and touchdowns (16), the duo formed one of the league's best passing attacks and combined to defeat the Cincinnati Bengals in the Super Bowl.

Since signing his rookie contract, Cooper Kupp has recorded 89 receptions for 634 yards and 57 touchdowns.

The Rams’ discarded champion, a man whose hands once clutched Lombardi gold, wanders the NFL’s labyrinthine free agency—a modern-day Odysseus seeking a new port. Whispers of Dallas’ southern charm and Seattle’s misty allure swirl like autumn leaves. But where pray tell, shall this gridiron virtuoso plant his standard next?

Ah, the drama! Picture, if you will, a high-stakes poker game beneath the stadium lights. Jerry Jones fans his cards with a coy grin, while Seattle’s Pete Carroll leans in, eyes sharp as a hawk. The pot? A receiver whose stat line reads like Shakespearean sonnets. Yet the clock ticks, the crowd murmurs, and the question lingers: Will Kupp’s next act be a triumph or tragedy?

The Pursuit of a Prodigal Playmaker: Kupp’s Crossroads

Wide receiver Cooper Kupp isn’t just a free agent—he’s a lightning rod. Since his release Wednesday, the Cowboys have galloped into the fray like John Wayne chasing a stagecoach. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports Dallas made a “push” to pair Kupp with CeeDee Lamb, creating a duo as tantalizing as peanut butter and jelly. But hold your horses...

Schefter later hinted the Cowboys aren’t the “likely landing spot.” Translation? Jerry Jones might be bargain-hunting at a Tiffany’s auction. Meanwhile, the Seahawks swoop in like Boeing jets over Puget Sound.

The Athletic’s Dianna Russini notes Seattle is “very interested,” dangling a homecoming for the Yakima native. Imagine Kupp in Seahawks blue, dodging defenders like Sasquatch evading paparazzi. But there’s a snag.

His asking price. Teams balk at his $14-15 million annual demand, a figure steeper than Mount Rainier’s slopes. Why the sticker shock? Let’s talk stats.

Kupp’s 2021 season was a masterpiece: 145 catches, 1,947 yards, 16 touchdowns—a “triple crown” feat matched only by legends like Sterling Sharpe. But recent years read like a blues song: 12 games in 2024, 710 yards, and a growing injury rap sheet. Teams wonder: Is he still Picasso, or just a pricey print?

The plot thickens. Sources whisper Kupp prefers the West Coast, a detail that could send New England’s hopes the way of the dodo. Yet as the Rams’ all-time receptions leader weighs his options, one truth remains: This isn’t just a signing. It’s a legacy play. And the next chapter? It’s coming faster than a Patrick Mahomes scramble.

The Price of Greatness: Dollars and Sense

Let’s cut to the chase: $15 million a year for a 31-year-old receiver? That’s the NFL equivalent of buying a vintage Mustang—thrilling, but will it sputter? The Patriots, ever the thrifty New Englanders, reportedly find Kupp’s price “a bit too steep,” per MassLive. Imagine Bill Belichick’s ghost muttering about “value” over clam chowder. But here’s the twist.

Kupp’s camp insists he’ll take a pay cut for the right fit. Picture a quarterback whisperer like Raiders' Geno Smith or Dallas’ Dak Prescott reviving his career. Or perhaps a reunion with Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell, his old Rams coordinator.

Minnesota could offer Kupp a WR3 role behind Justin Jefferson—a humbling demotion, but with playoff upside. But don’t sleep on dark horses. The Jaguars and Broncos linger like understudies waiting for their cue.

Jacksonville’s Trevor Lawrence needs a safety blanket, and Denver’s Sean Payton loves reclamation projects. Yet the clock ticks. Russini reports Kupp aims to decide by Friday—a deadline tighter than a fourth-quarter Hail Mary. What’s at stake?

For Kupp, redemption. For suitors, a gamble. He’s either the missing piece or a cautionary tale. Either way, his choice will ripple through the league like a halftime show controversy. Will he chase rings, cash, or home-state glory? Stay tuned.

A Legacy in the Balance

And so, dear reader, we arrive at the crossroads. Wide receiver Cooper Kupp stands at the edge of twilight, his cleats poised to carve fresh tracks in NFL lore. Will he ride into Dallas’ sunset, anchor Seattle’s renaissance, or script a surprise ending worthy of M. Night Shyamalan?

The numbers don’t lie: 7,776 career yards, 57 touchdowns, and one Super Bowl MVP. But football, like life, is a game of inches—and second acts. Whether Kupp’s next jersey becomes a treasure or a trivia answer hinges on this moment. The ink is wet, the offers loom, and the league holds its breath. Tick-tock, Mr. Kupp. History waits.

Kupp was an absolutely crucial piece of the Rams Super Bowl win in the 2021-2022 season. He won the "triple crown" in that same season, leading the league in receptions (145), receiving yards (1,947), and receiving touchdowns (16). However, Kupp had a bit of a down year for his standards in 2024. This has led to his time in Los Angeles coming to an end. Cooper Kupp is going to have a big market now that he has been released.

Cooper Kupp Expected to Have Big Market

Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp will be finding a new home this offseason for the first time after spending his first eight years in the league in Los Angeles. Kupp is going to have a number of suitors once he is released. Which teams could be the best fits for Kupp?

Seattle Seahawks

This offseason has been incredibly busy for the Seattle Seahawks. First off, the team traded starting quarterback Geno Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders. Seattle signed former Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold to a 3 year, $100 million dollar deal to replace Smith. The Seahawks also traded star receiver D.K. Metcalf to the Pittsburgh Steelers, and wideout Tyler Lockett is also leaving the team. Trading for Cooper Kupp makes a lot of sense for the Seahawks. Jaxon Smith-Njigba is an emerging superstar for the franchise at wide receiver. However, there is not much else for new quarterback Sam Darnold to work with. This is where signing Cooper Kupp could come into play. A duo of Smith-Njigba and Kupp would be difficult for opposing defenses, and would make life easier on Sam Darnold in his first season in Seattle.

https://youtu.be/wMfEG0f2NwQ?si=DEkSFQKY6tODGPAT

Minnesota Vikings

The Minnesota Vikings have also had a busy start to free agency. They have made a slew of upgrades on their interior offensive and defensive lines as well as re-signing running back Aaron Jones. Quarterback J.J. McCarthy will take over as the starter. The Vikings are a great fit for Cooper Kupp as he has seen great success in the past with coach Kevin O'Connell. O'Connell was the Rams offensive coordinator when Kupp won the triple crown in 2021. He is a proven elite offensive mind and integrating Kupp into an offense with Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, T.J. Hockenson will give opposing defenses nightmares. This will make life very easy on McCarthy in his first season as the starter.

New England Patriots

The Patriots seem to be ready to compete now. They signed Milton Williams to a massive contract, making him the third highest paid defensive tackle. New England should target a wide receiver to pair with second year quarterback Drake Maye. Cooper Kupp is the perfect option. Kupp can run any route and has elite hands, making him a friendly target for quarterbacks. Maye showed a lot of potetnial last season but there was simply not enough help around him. If the Patriots can sign Cooper Kupp it could open up another dimension to this offense.

However, while Kupp's injuries led to his Los Angeles departure, he's still a productive player who should have a strong market now that he's no longer tied to his previous contract.

BREAKING: Los Angeles Rams Release Cooper Kupp

Possible Fits

New England Patriots

The New England Patriots have been one of free agency's biggest spenders, and it's easy to see why. Entering the legal tampering period with the most cap space in the league, the Patriots had holes at every position other than quarterback. While the team fortified the defense and began to fix the offensive line with the Morgan Moses signing, they still need to improve the wide receiver room. The team swung and missed on Chris Godwin, and Mack Hollins is nothing more than a journeyman. Cooper Kupp would easily be the best receiver on this roster, and the five-time captain could be the ideal mentor for this young depth chart.

Los Angeles Chargers

Like the Patriots, the Los Angeles Chargers have been active in free agency but still need to address part of the roster. Ladd McConkey remains the only reliable wide receiver on the roster, and their depth took a hit when veteran Josh Palmer signed with the Buffalo Bills. Head coach Jim Harbaugh wants to win games by running the football, but even he knows this wide receiver depth chart isn't good enough as currently built. McConkey and Kupp have similar skillsets, but a good offensive coordinator will find a way to utilize two players who can line up wide or in the slot.

Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver room is a massive question mark. While Marquise Brown is returning, DeAndre Hopkins is now a Raven and youngsters Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy may face league discipline for their offseason behavior. With Travis Kelce no longer capable of carrying a passing attack, the Chiefs need someone to step up and help this team return to their Super Bowl-winning ways.

Las Vegas Raiders

Despite finishing the 2024 season with a 4-13 record, first-year head coach Pete Carroll believes this team can make some noise in 2025. He's already upgraded the quarterback position with the Geno Smith trade, which should net them a few wins. However, while Smith is a good quarterback, he's not good enough to bring a team to the playoffs without a strong supporting cast. Jakobi Meyers is a reliable wide receiver, but this team needs another weapon to have a shot at the postseason. Following his Rams release, Cooper Kupp could land with the Raiders, as head coach Pete Carroll is familiar with his game from all their shared encounters in the NFC West.

Carolina Panthers

The Carolina Panthers have a depth chart loaded with promising but relatively unproven pass-catchers. While Adam Thielen currently plays the role of the established veteran, Bryce Young could use another proven set of hands in case Xavier Legette, Jalen Coker, or tight end Ja'Tavion Sanders cannot make the Year 2 leap. Cooper Kupp is a solid fit for Young's skillset, and he should be interested in joining an up-and-coming squad following his Rams release.

2025 NFL Quarterback Class Opens Door for Under-The-Radar Positions To Dominate Draft Chatter https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/03/11/nfl-quarterback-drought-opens-door-for-under-the-radar-positions-to-dominate-draft-chatter/ https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/03/11/nfl-quarterback-drought-opens-door-for-under-the-radar-positions-to-dominate-draft-chatter/#respond Tue, 11 Mar 2025 20:11:42 +0000 https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/?p=221999 The NFL draft is usually a quarterback lovefest—think The Bachelor finale, but with more playbooks and less rose-giving. This year? The 2025 Quarterback class cupboard feels emptier than a nacho platter at a Super Bowl party. With no surefire franchise saviors hogging the spotlight, positions like defensive line, tight end, and even safety are crashing the first-round conversation like uninvited guests who end up stealing the show.

Welcome to the 2025 draft, where “Who’s that?” might just be the most asked question. While teams scramble to find the next Patrick Mahomes, the real drama lies in the trenches and beyond. Think of it like Stranger Things shifting focus from Hawkins High to the Upside Down—less obvious, but way more intriguing.

Quarterback carousel spins into uncertainty

The New York Jets’ signing of Justin Fields feels less like a grand romance and more like a rebound fling. After 14 straight playoff misses and a messy breakup with Aaron Rodgers, Gang Green tossed Fields a two-year, $40 million “prove it” deal. But let’s be real: Fields’ résumé—4-2 as a Steelers starter last year, 16 career fumbles in 2022—is about as reliable as a TikTok weather forecast. Yet here we are.

The 2025 Quarterback class? It’s thinner than the plot of Riverdale’s final season. Scouts are lukewarm on Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders and Miami’s Cam Ward, while Alabama’s Jalen Milroe and Ole Miss’ Jaxson Dart feel like lottery tickets with scratch-off odds. Hence, this isn’t a group that’ll have GMs sprinting to the podium. So, what’s a Quarterback-needy team to do?

The Jets, for example, are betting on Fields’ legs (1,143 rushing yards in 2022) and a young supporting cast featuring Garrett Wilson and Breece Hall. But if this experiment flops? Cue the Curb Your Enthusiasm theme—it’s back to the drawing board for a franchise that’s mastered the art of disappointment.

While the Jets’ Fields experiment grabs headlines, other Quarterback-needy teams are navigating the draft’s murky waters with varying strategies. The Pittsburgh Steelers, left scrambling after Fields’ exit, are eyeing a reunion with Russell Wilson or Aaron Rodgers. While flirting with trade targets like New England’s Joe Milton—a raw but rocket-armed project buried behind Drake Maye.

Speaking of the Patriots, they’re all-in on Maye as their franchise cornerstone. As they leave Milton as trade bait despite his untapped potential. Meanwhile, the Tennessee Titans (picking first overall) face a dilemma: reach for a shaky Quarterback prospect like Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders, or snag Penn State’s generational pass-rusher Abdul Carter and kick the Quarterback can down the road.

Even teams like the Saints and Rams, lurking in the mid-rounds, are gambling on developmental options. Options like Tyler Shough or Jaxson Dart—proof that in a Quarterback drought, desperation and creativity go hand in hand.

Defensive Linemen Steal the Spotlight

If quarterbacks are the draft’s main course, this year’s defensive line class is the loaded nachos you can’t stop eating. Penn State’s Abdul Carter, a 6’3”, 250-pound edge rusher with a stress fracture and a top-five grade, headlines a group so deep it could fill a Marvel ensemble. Georgia’s Mykel Williams (6’6”, 260 lbs) and Texas A&M’s Shemar Stewart (4.67-second 40-yard dash at 267 lbs) bring Black Panther-level athleticism, while Michigan’s Mason Graham anchors the interior like a fridge full of bricks.

“You can’t have enough good ones,” Bears GM Ryan Poles said, referencing the Eagles’ D-line dominance in Super Bowl 59. Eleven defensive linemen could go in Round 1—a tidal wave of talent that’s forcing teams to rethink their boards. Even Colorado’s Travis Hunter, the two-way unicorn, is getting CB1 buzz despite playing receiver 50% of the time.

Meanwhile, Shedeur Sanders’ draft stock is slipping faster than a grocery bag with a hole. Critics point to his “uneasy” pocket presence, but Kurt Warner offered context: "I just want to see him more solid in the pocket and the ability to process quickly so he doesn't have to get uneasy after first look and go create a throw. To stay in there, see it, understand it, and get the ball out a little bit more on time than I saw."

When you’ve been sacked 94 times in two years, wouldn’t you twitch? Behind Colorado’s Swiss cheese O-line, Sanders’ toughness (playing through injections, per Deion Sanders) might be his best selling point. Besides, this draft isn’t about finding a hero...

It’s about building a roster that can survive without one. With Quarterbacks stuck in purgatory, teams are stockpiling defensive monsters, versatile tight ends (Penn State’s Tyler Warren is this year’s Gronk-lite), and hybrid playmakers. The Jets’ Fields gamble? It’s a subplot in a bigger story.

In a year without a Caleb Williams, you either get creative or get left behind. So grab your popcorn. The 2025 Quarterback class might lack star power, but the chaos? That’s must-see TV.

The NFL draft is usually a quarterback lovefest—think The Bachelor finale, but with more playbooks and less rose-giving.

Poona Ford, Los Angeles Rams, Agree to Contract

After a slow 2023, Poona Ford bounced back with a strong season in 2024. Signing a one-year deal with the Chargers, the veteran started all 17 games while recording one interception, three sacks, 39 tackles, eight tackles-for-loss, and nine quarterback hits. With his help, the team earned a Wild Card spot in the first year of the Jim Harbaugh Era but went one-and-done against C.J. Stroud and the Houston Texans.

Poona Ford originally entered the league as an undrafted free agent following the 2018 NFL Draft. Signing with the Seattle Seahawks, the Texas product made the Week 1 53-man roster but spent most of his rookie season in a reserve role. Appearing in 11 games, Ford finished his inaugural campaign with 21 tackles, three tackles-for-loss, two quarterback hits, and no sacks.

Ford parlayed his promising rookie season into a full-time starting job in 2019. Appearing in 15 games while making 14 starts, Ford recorded 0.5 sacks, 32 tackles, five tackles-for-loss, and three quarterback hits while on the field.

Poona Ford maintained his starting job and signed a two-year contract extension in 2021. He played out the remainder of his deal and finished his time in Seattle with 7.5 sacks, 181 tackles, 28 tackles-for-loss, and 27 quarterback hits.

Following his five years in Seattle, Ford joined the Buffalo Bills on a one-year deal. Unfortunately, the veteran struggled in the new environment, appearing in eight games without making a start while recording one sack, nine tackles, one tackle-for-loss, and three quarterback hits.

Since signing his rookie contract, Poona Ford has appeared in 101 games while making 81 starts. When on the field, the Texas product recorded 11.5 sacks, 229 tackles, 37 tackles-for-loss, and 39 quarterback hits.

Breaking: Rams Could Release, Not Trade, All-Pro After Latest Signing https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/03/10/rams-could-release-trade-cooper-kupp-davante-adams-signing/ https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/03/10/rams-could-release-trade-cooper-kupp-davante-adams-signing/#respond Mon, 10 Mar 2025 11:08:01 +0000 https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/?p=221674 The Los Angeles Rams signed wide receiver Davante Adams on Sunday afternoon in a move that almost certainly signals the release of wide receiver Cooper Kupp. A third-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, Kupp became one of the league's most reliable possession receivers and peaked in 2021. Paired with Matthew Stafford, the Eastern Washington product finished the season with 145 receptions for 1,947 yards and 16 touchdowns while helping Los Angeles win the Super Bowl.

Unfortunately, Kupp has never recaptured that glory. While he's still an effective player when on the field, he hasn't played in more than 12 games in the past three seasons. This inability to stay on the field combined with the emergence of young superstar Puka Nacua has made him expendable, and the arrival of Davante Adams all but ensures he won't return in 2025. Head coach Sean McVay said the Rams would trade Cooper Kupp, but they might have to release him if no suitors emerge.

Nobody wants to surrender a draft pick for Cooper Kupp and his current contract, but several teams should be interested in the veteran if the Rams release him. While free agency will impact his potential landing spots, the following five teams make the most sense for the veteran.

Rams Could Release, Not Trade, Cooper Kupp After Davante Adams Signing

Possible Fits

New England Patriots

Free agency hasn't even started yet, and the New England Patriots are already struggling to improve life for franchise quarterback Drake Maye. With Tee Higgins, Trey Smith, and Ronnie Stanley returning to their respective teams, New England cannot use their league-leading $121 million in cap space to secure an elite receiver or blocker. Instead, they must use their money to sign as many solid veterans as possible. Kupp's age and injury history will drive down his price, but he'd still be the best receiver on this team by a wide margin. The Patriots can't fix their offensive line in one offseason, so they should target a player whose ability to quickly get open can mitigate the effects of poor blocking.

Los Angeles Chargers

The Los Angeles Chargers have a young star in second-round pick Ladd McConkey, but they need another receiver to take this team to the next level. McConkey and Cooper Kupp have similar skill sets, but that shouldn't stop the Chargers from going after him after the Rams release the wide receiver. The right offensive coordinator will find a way to make this scheme work, as both players can align in the slot and out wide. Justin Herbert is a great quarterback, but he needs more help to overtake the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC West.

Dallas Cowboys

The "selectively aggressive" Dallas Cowboys might have used up most of their spending money on the Osa Odighizuwa extension, but they could target Cooper Kupp if the Rams release him. The veteran wide receiver market is saturated, so Kupp could be willing to sign a cheap one-year deal to re-establish his value. Dak Prescott is one of the league's better quarterbacks and CeeDee Lamb is an elite wide receiver, but this team must find someone else to siphon some targets.

Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs re-signed Marquise Brown, but they could still use more support in their passing game. First-round pick Xavier Worthy will not face charges for his recent arrest, but that doesn't mean he won't face league discipline. Ditto for second-round pick Rashee Rice, as both players could miss time next year with their respective off-field issues. Cooper Kupp is a reliable veteran whose ability to quickly get open makes him an ideal fit with the more conservative passing attack of recent years.

Baltimore Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens tried and failed to improve their wide receiver depth chart with the Diontae Johnson trade. While the former Panther couldn't handle a reduced role, Cooper Kupp may be a better choice for the job. While he's used to a higher workload, he could settle in as the second or third option in this passing attack and be the missing piece that finally puts Baltimore in the Super Bowl.

The 2024 season was something of a mixed bag for Davante Adams. Starting the year with the Las Vegas Raiders, the veteran only played in three games before the team sent him to the New York Jets to reunite with Aaron Rodgers. While the Jets struggled to meet expectations, Adams played well in his new environment. During his 11 games with Gang Green, the wide receiver recorded 67 receptions for 854 yards and seven touchdowns. Unfortunately, this wasn't enough to save his job, as New York released him and Rodgers ahead of the 2025 league year.

Davante Adams originally entered the league as a second-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. Selected by the Green Bay Packers, the Fresno State product needed some time to establish himself in the league. Starting his career as the third receiver on the depth chart, Adams played a complementary role as a rookie but couldn't handle increased opportunities during his second year in the league. Catching just 50 of his 94 targets for 483 yards and one touchdown, Adams was one of the league's least efficient receivers.

Fortunately, something clicked in 2016, as Adams overcame his slow start and developed into one of the league's most dangerous receivers. Following a 997-yard, 12-touchdown 2016, Adams proved he was the real deal with six consecutive Pro Bowl selections. While having Rodgers as a quarterback helped his production, he proved he could remain an elite weapon with Derek Carr. Joining the Raiders in 2022, the veteran finished the year with 100 receptions for 1,516 yards and a league-high 14 receiving touchdowns.

Since signing his rookie contract, Davante Adams has recorded 957 receptions for 11,844 yards and 103 touchdowns.

Tutu Atwell, Los Angeles Rams, Agree to Contract

Atwell hit the open market following the best season of his young career. Appearing in all 17 games while making five starts, the wide receiver finished his season with 42 receptions for 562 yards and no touchdowns on 62 targets. With his help, the Los Angeles Rams overcame an uninspiring 1-4 start to make it all the way to the NFC Divisional Round. Unfortunately, the team lost to the Philadelphia Eagles after a last-second comeback fell just short.

Tutu Atwell originally entered the league as a second-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Selected by the Los Angeles Rams, the Louisville product had a terrible start to his career. Spending most of the year on special teams, the wideout played in eight games as a rookie and didn't record a single catch, or even a target. Even with his lack of contribution, Atwell still earned a Super Bowl ring after the team took down the Cincinnati Bengals.

Despite the slow start to his career, Tutu Atwell showed signs of life during his second year in the league. Becoming a depth part of the offense, the wide receiver finished the 2022 campaign with 18 receptions for 298 yards and one touchdown on 35 targets. Despite his breakout, the Rams took a step back and missed the playoffs.

Atwell continued his positive growth in 2023. Despite the presence of Cooper Kupp and rookie sensation Puka Nacua, the wide receiver still finished the season with 39 receptions for 483 yards and three touchdowns on 67 targets.

Since signing his rookie contract, Tutu Atwell has appeared in 54 games while making 23 starts. While on the field, the Louisville product has recorded 99 receptions for 1,343 yards and four touchdowns.
