Cooper Kupp, Seahawks, Agree to Contract

The 2024 season was a mixed bag for Kupp. While injuries limited him to just 12 games, he remained a productive receiver when on the field, although he never came close to matching his career-best numbers. During his time on the field, the 31-year-old recorded 67 receptions for 710 yards and six touchdowns on 100 targets. The Rams made it to the NFC Divisional Round before narrowly losing to the eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. Following the season, the Rams released Cooper Kupp thanks to his bloated contact, injury history, and the breakout of budding star Puka Nacua.

Cooper Kupp originally entered the league as a third-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. Selected by the Los Angeles Rams, the Eastern Washington product quickly made a name for himself. Appearing in 15 games while making six starts, the wideout finished his inaugural campaign with 62 receptions for 869 yards and five touchdowns. He picked up where he left off in 2018, but suffered a season-ending knee injury after just eight games. Without him, the Rams made it to the Super Bowl but lost to the New England Patriots.

Kupp returned to the field in 2019 and remained a productive playmaker. Showing no signs of injury, the veteran finished the season with 94 receptions for 1,161 yards and 10 touchdowns. After another strong season in 2020, Los Angeles traded Jared Goff to the Detroit Lions for longtime veteran Matthew Stafford.

Stafford and Kupp immediately established a rapport, leading to Kupp's complete dominance in 2021. Leading the league in receptions (145), yards (1,947), and touchdowns (16), the duo formed one of the league's best passing attacks and combined to defeat the Cincinnati Bengals in the Super Bowl.

Since signing his rookie contract, Cooper Kupp has recorded 89 receptions for 634 yards and 57 touchdowns.

Demarcus Lawrence, Seattle Seahawks, Agree to Contract

The Dallas Cowboys suffered an absurd amount of injuries in 2024, and Demarcus Lawrence was no exception. The veteran played in only four games last year but was reasonably productive during his abbreviated time on the field. During his truncated season, the edge defender recorded three sacks, 14 tackles, four tackles-for-loss, and five quarterback hits. The Cowboys themselves struggled, missing the playoffs in what was ultimately the final year of the Mike McCarthy Era.

Demarcus Lawrence originally entered the league as a second-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. Selected by the Dallas Cowboys, the Boise State product started his career in unremarkable fashion, appearing in just seven games as a rookie while failing to record a sack. However, he broke out in 2017, appearing in all 16 games while making 13 starts and recording eight sacks, 55 tackles, 14 tackles-for-loss, and 12 quarterback hits. Unfortunately, the Cowboys themselves struggled as Tony Romo missed most of the season with a back injury.

Lawrence regressed in 2016 but put together his best play in 2017. Making his first Pro Bowl and earning Second-Team All-Pro honors, the pass rusher finished the season with 14.5 sacks, 58 tackles, 14 tackles-for-loss, and 26 quarterback hits. This strong play paired with the offensive improvements from rookie quarterback Dak Prescott led this team to the playoffs but they ultimately came short of reaching the NFC Championship Game.

The pass rusher followed this up with a 10-sack season in 2017 and remained effective throughout the later part of his career. Prior to his injury-plagued 2024, Lawrence made two consecutive Pro Bowls in the 2022 and 2023 seasons while establishing himself as one of the league's better all-around edge defenders.

Since signing his rookie contract, Demarcus Lawrence has appeared in 141 games while making 123 starts. While on the field, the Boise State product has recorded 61.5 sacks and 126 quarterback hits.

Cooper Kupp Expected To Have Big Market https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/03/12/cooper-kupp-expected-to-have-big-market/ https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/03/12/cooper-kupp-expected-to-have-big-market/#respond Wed, 12 Mar 2025 19:47:12 +0000 https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/?p=222303 Cooper Kupp already has a Hall of Fame worthy resume with the Los Angeles Rams. Kupp was an absolutely crucial piece of the Rams Super Bowl win in the 2021-2022 season. He won the "triple crown" in that same season, leading the league in receptions (145), receiving yards (1,947), and receiving touchdowns (16). However, Kupp had a bit of a down year for his standards in 2024. This has led to his time in Los Angeles coming to an end. Cooper Kupp is going to have a big market now that he has been released.

Cooper Kupp Expected to Have Big Market

Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp will be finding a new home this offseason for the first time after spending his first eight years in the league in Los Angeles. Kupp is going to have a number of suitors once he is released. Which teams could be the best fits for Kupp?

Seattle Seahawks

This offseason has been incredibly busy for the Seattle Seahawks. First off, the team traded starting quarterback Geno Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders. Seattle signed former Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold to a 3 year, $100 million dollar deal to replace Smith. The Seahawks also traded star receiver D.K. Metcalf to the Pittsburgh Steelers, and wideout Tyler Lockett is also leaving the team. Trading for Cooper Kupp makes a lot of sense for the Seahawks. Jaxon Smith-Njigba is an emerging superstar for the franchise at wide receiver. However, there is not much else for new quarterback Sam Darnold to work with. This is where signing Cooper Kupp could come into play. A duo of Smith-Njigba and Kupp would be difficult for opposing defenses, and would make life easier on Sam Darnold in his first season in Seattle.

Minnesota Vikings

The Minnesota Vikings have also had a busy start to free agency. They have made a slew of upgrades on their interior offensive and defensive lines as well as re-signing running back Aaron Jones. Quarterback J.J. McCarthy will take over as the starter. The Vikings are a great fit for Cooper Kupp as he has seen great success in the past with coach Kevin O'Connell. O'Connell was the Rams offensive coordinator when Kupp won the triple crown in 2021. He is a proven elite offensive mind and integrating Kupp into an offense with Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, T.J. Hockenson will give opposing defenses nightmares. This will make life very easy on McCarthy in his first season as the starter.

New England Patriots

The Patriots seem to be ready to compete now. They signed Milton Williams to a massive contract, making him the third highest paid defensive tackle. New England should target a wide receiver to pair with second year quarterback Drake Maye. Cooper Kupp is the perfect option. Kupp can run any route and has elite hands, making him a friendly target for quarterbacks. Maye showed a lot of potetnial last season but there was simply not enough help around him. If the Patriots can sign Cooper Kupp it could open up another dimension to this offense.

Kyle Shanahan Welcomes Seahawks Star as 49ers’ Set To Bid Farewell to Kyle Juszczyk https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/03/12/kyle-shanahan-welcomes-seahawks-star-as-49ers-set-to-bid-farewell-to-kyle-juszczyk/ https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/03/12/kyle-shanahan-welcomes-seahawks-star-as-49ers-set-to-bid-farewell-to-kyle-juszczyk/#respond Wed, 12 Mar 2025 18:57:44 +0000 https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/?p=222266 The NFL offseason is like Survivor: Gridiron Edition—one day you’re building alliances, the next you’re voting off a legend. Head Coach Kyle Shanahan just flashed his immunity idol, pulling a divisional rival into camp. Meanwhile, a fan-favorite veteran packed his torch. Let’s just say the 49ers’ tribe has spoken.

Picture this: Head Coach Kyle Shanahan, clipboard in hand, smirking like he just cracked the Da Vinci Code. The NFC West rivalry just got spicier than a Brooklyn 99 stakeout. If NFL free agency were a chess match, Shanahan just slid a pawn into queen’s territory. The 49ers’ front office is mixing bold moves with tough goodbyes, leaving fans buzzing like a Ted Lasso halftime speech. What’s brewing in Santa Clara? Let’s break it down.

Shanahan’s chess move: stealing Tre Brown from Seattle

Head Coach Kyle Shanahan isn’t just building a defense—he’s assembling a Star Wars rebel alliance. Tre Brown, Seattle’s scrappy 2021 fourth-round pick, is swapping navy blue for scarlet red. Brown’s agents broke the news via Instagram, and 49ers fans are already memeing the move like The Big Bang Theory’s Sheldon dissecting Doctor Who. Brown’s stats? Solid: 74 tackles, two picks, and a touchdown in 39 games. But here’s the kicker.

He’s joining a secondary that lost Charvarius Ward and Talanoa Hufanga. Think of it like replacing Stranger Things characters mid-season—risky, but thrilling. Besides, Brown isn’t coming to start.

He’s depth behind Deommodore Lenoir and Renardo Green, a low-cost gamble with playoff upside. Remember when the Giants bullpen saved their 2023 World Series run? That’s the vibe here. Brown’s coverage stats?

Meh—he allowed a 124.4 passer rating last year. But Shanahan’s scheme could turn him into a diamond-in-the-rough, like Tom Brady’s sixth-round glow-up. One Seahawks beat reporter put it bluntly: “He’s got a strong game, strong mentality. Just needs the opportunity.” The real drama?

Brown’s snap count plummeted under new Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald. Now, he’s hungry. Imagine Ted Lasso’s Roy Kent with a grudge. If Brown locks down the No. 3 corner spot, the 49ers’ run defense gets an instant upgrade. But can he handle elite receivers? Stay tuned.

The Juice is loose: end of an era in San Francisco

While Shanahan plays defense, the 49ers’ offense just lost its Swiss Army knife. Fullback Kyle Juszczyk—aka “Juice”—is getting cut after eight Pro Bowl seasons. Juszczyk wasn’t just a blocker; he was a culture icon. Teammate George Kittle tweeted “💔🧃,” summing up the mood like The Office’s Michael Scott at a goodbye party.

Juszczyk’s release isn’t just about stats (19 receptions, 200 yards in 2024). It’s about cap space and a shifting NFL meta. Fullbacks are as rare as Seinfeld laugh tracks nowadays. But Juice defied trends, becoming a dual-threat unicorn. His wife, Kristin, hinted at the sting with an Instagram Story of their dog side-eyeing a baseball cap. “Mood,” the caption read. The locker room ripple effect?

Massive. Juszczyk was a Kyle Shanahan staple since 2017, part of the 'Let’s rebuild this thing' ethos. Now, the 49ers are pivoting to two-tight-end sets, leaving fullbacks in the rearview. But don’t count Juice out.

He told ESPN, “I'm definitely not done playing. I've seen zero regression. I think especially, I mean, you can turn on the last two games and please show me where I've regressed, so I have no plans of stopping.” Think Rocky Balboa lacing up for one last fight.

Shanahan’s gambit and the human cost

Head Coach Kyle Shanahan is playing 4D chess. Stealing Tre Brown? Smart. Letting go of Kyle Juszczyk? Heartbreaking. The 49ers’ offseason feels like Game of Thrones—heroic wins and gut-punch losses. Brown’s arrival injects youth into a shaky secondary, while Juszczyk’s exit reminds us football is as much business as it is brotherhood.

Will Shanahan’s bet on Brown pay off? Can Juice find a new home? One thing’s certain: In the NFC West, the drama never stops. Grab your popcorn—this season’s gonna be a rollercoaster.

Valdes-Scantling, a two-time Super Bowl champion, spent the 2024 season with the New Orleans Saints and Buffalo Bills but also played for the Green Bay Packers and Kansas City Chiefs.

Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Seattle Seahawks, Agree to Contract

After winning two Super Bowls with the Kansas City Chiefs, Valdes-Scantling spent the early part of the 2024 season fighting for a depth role with the Buffalo Bills. Appearing in six games, the wideout recorded just two receptions for 26 yards on nine targets before the team cut him. This wasn't the end of the road for him, as he spent the back half of the season with the New Orleans Saints. Filling in for the injured Rashid Shaheed, Valdes-Scantling came to life and recorded 17 receptions for 385 yards and four touchdowns during his eight games with the club.

Marquez Valdes-Scantling originally entered the league as a fifth-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. Selected by the Green Bay Packers, the South Florida product immediately developed a rapport with Aaron Rodgers. Appearing in all 16 games while making 10 starts, the wide receiver finished his rookie season with 38 receptions for 581 yards and two touchdowns. The Packers themselves missed the playoffs and fired head coach Mike McCarthy midway through the season.

Green Bay brought in Matt LaFleur in 2019 but Valdes-Scantling remained in his specialized role. Following a modest second season, the former fifth-round pick led the league in yards per reception in Aaron Rodgers' MVP 2020. Unfortuantely, despite the successful connection, the Packers lost the NFC Championship Game to Tom Brady's Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

After another strong season, Marquez Valdes-Scantling signed a three-year contract with the Kansas City Chiefs. He played out two of those years with the team, finishing his Chiefs tenure with 63 receptions for 1,002 yards and three touchdowns on 123 targets. With his help, the team won consecutive Super Bowls during his two seasons with the club.

Unfortuantely, despite the successful connection, the Packers lost the NFC Championship Game to Tom Brady’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

DK Metcalf Trade May Spell End for Steelers Wide Receiver – 5 Possible Next Teams https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/03/10/dk-metcalf-trade-may-spell-end-for-steelers-wide-receiver-george-pickens-5-possible-next-teams/ https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/2025/03/10/dk-metcalf-trade-may-spell-end-for-steelers-wide-receiver-george-pickens-5-possible-next-teams/#respond Mon, 10 Mar 2025 20:42:16 +0000 https://lastwordonsports.com/nfl/?p=221802 DK Metcalf trade means this could be the end for Steelers wide receiver George Pickens this upcoming 2025 season. According to the breaking news, the Steelers made a surprise trade this week to open up free agency to finally find a capable wideout alongside Pickens. However, this could mean the team could be exploring the idea of trading Pickens now that they have their true No. 1 receiver. There's a lot of excitement for the Steelers as the future is bright for the team's offense but the reality might come sooner than anyone is anticipating.

Last year, the Steelers were in the same situation in their quarterback department after trading Kenny Pickett and quickly replaced him with Justin Fields and Russell Wilson. It seems like Wilson won the job as of this posting if he doesn't sign anywhere else this offseason. However, Pickens has been a distraction for the team in the past and now that he enters the final year of his contract, it could mean a bigger question for next year. Rumors were flying high after the season where the Steelers could trade Pickens and it seems likely it could be the case.

It'll be interesting to see how these two will get along in one locker room. Many might expect some turmoil between the two but that will be up to the organization to see how it fares this year if they keep Pickens. The Steelers could save the headache and trade Pickens now that he has value to these five teams.

DK Metcalf Trade May Spell End for Steelers Wide Receiver George Pickens - 5 Possible Next Teams

Possible Destinations

Carolina Panthers

As of this post, the Carolina Panthers haven't done anything to improve their pass-catching department this free agency. The team extending Tommy Tremble is a positive step but they need a consistent receiver to catch the ball from quarterback Bryce Young. Jalen Coker and Xavier Legette are two promising wideouts but the Panthers could use Pickens' presence to build a new foundation if it doesn't bode well in Pittsburgh.

Washington Commanders

As for the Commanders, they're still adding new acquisitions to their offense after trading for Tackle Laremy Tunsil to enhance the offensive line. It's a perfect gate for quarterback Jayden Daniels but just because after trading for Deebo Samuel, they would stop now to improve the receiver department. The Commanders trying to maximize Daniels' rookie deal and they could do this by trading for George Pickens next.

Dallas Cowboys

Owner Jerry Jones said the Cowboys won't be aggressive this free agency again but they did mention "passive aggression" prior. As it stands, CeeDee Lamb is the only reliable superstar target for Dak Prescott. This isn't ideal for a team that wants to win, especially after extending Prescott to a blockbuster deal last offseason. Pickens is the perfect man for their situation to be their No. 2 receiver and could form a formidable chemistry with Lamb.

Los Angeles Chargers

The Los Angeles Chargers lost Joshua Palmer to the Bills and they will probably release Quentin Johnston after two underwhelming seasons. The team needs a new pass catcher in the worst possible way if Jim Harbaugh wants this team to advance further in the postseason next year. Ladd McConkey is the only set of reliable hands and a guy like Pickens could emerge as the No. 1 receiver for the Chargers to help quarterback Justin Herbert.

New Orleans Saints

The Saints might not have the cap space but they could pull off the unthinkable if they really want to. Chris Olave is the only receiver who has true potential to become a star while Rashid Shaheed has his moments. He and Pickens could be a good duo in New Orleans and finally give Derek Carr a legitimate chance in the NFC.

Ernest Jones, Seattle Seahawks, Agree to Contract

Jones bounced around throughout the final year of his contract. Entering the offseason with the Los Angeles Rams, Sean McVay's squad traded him to Tennessee just before the season. He played well with the Titans, recording 44 tackles, three tackles-for-loss, and one quarterback hits in six games. However, with the season lost, Tennessee decided to trade him to the Seattle Seahawks as they made a push for the playoffs. The linebacker started 10 games for the club, recording 94 tackles, one tackle-for-loss, two quarterback hits, and one interception while on the field. Unfortunately, his efforts weren't enough to get the team into the postseason.

Ernest Jones originally entered the league as a third-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Selected by the Los Angeles Rams, the South Carolina product started his career on a promising note. Appearing in 15 games while making seven starts, the rookie finished his inaugural season with two interceptions, one sack, 61 tackles, one tackle-for-loss, and three quarterback hits. With his help, Los Angeles won the Super Bowl after narrowly beating Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals.

The linebacker built on that promising debut season with an even better 2022. While the Rams themselves struggled, Jones finished the season with 114 tackles, four tackles-for-loss, one quarterback hit, and one interception. One year later, Jones set career highs in sacks (4.5), tackles (145), tackles-for-loss (14) and quarterback hits (six) while helping the Rams make an unlikely run to the playoffs. Unfortunately, they lost in the first round to the Detroit Lions.

Since signing his rookie contract, Ernest Jones has appeared in 48 games while making 63 starts. While on the field, the linebacker has recorded six sacks, four interceptions, 458 tackles, and 23 tackles-for-loss.

Darnold, a former first-round pick, spent the 2024 season with the Minnesota Vikings but has also played for the New York Jets, Carolina Panthers, and San Francisco 49ers.

Sam Darnold is signing with the Seattle Seahawks on a three-year deal worth $110.5M total, per Adam Schefter.

The first big quarterback domino has fallen.

Sam Darnold, Seattle Seahawks, Agree to Contract

Darnold enters free agency following the best season of his career. Originally signing with the Vikings as a backup, the former first-round pick was thrust into starting duties after rookie J.J. McCarthy suffered a season-ending preseason injury. Guided by a great offensive mind in Kevin O'Connell and having reliable targets in Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison, Darnold led the Vikings to a 14-win season while completing 66.2% of his passes for 4,319 yards, 35 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. Unfortunately, he finished the year on a low note with a poor performance against the Los Angeles Rams in the Wild Card round.

Sam Darnold originally entered the league as a first-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. Selected by the New York Jets, the USC product beat out veteran Josh McCown for the Week 1 starting job. Inheriting a flawed roster, the rookie finished his inaugural season with 2,865 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions in 13 games. He followed this up with an up-and-down 2019, as a case of mononucleosis caused him to struggle early in the year. However, he came alive down the stretch and gave the team hope for 2020.

Those hopes were soon dashed, as Darnold had his worst season in 2020. Making 12 starts, the quarterback finished the season with just 2,208 passing yards, nine touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. Following the season, the Jets traded Darnold to the Carolina Panthers to pave the way for second-overall pick Zach Wilson. After two disappointing seasons in Carolina, Darnold spent the 2023 season backing up Brock Purdy with the 49ers.

Since signing his rookie contract, Sam Darnold has appeared in 83 games while making 73 starts. While on the field, the USC product has completed 61.2% of his passes for 16,383 yards, 98 touchdowns, and 68 interceptions.

Jarran Reed, Seattle Seahawks, Agree to Contract

Despite being on the wrong side of 30, Jarran Reed had yet another successful season for Seattle in 2024. Appearing in all 17 games, the veteran defensive tackle finished the season with 4.5 sacks, 45 tackles, five tackles-for-loss, 15 quarterback hits, and a 7o.6 PFF grade, the 20th-best mark out of 126 eligible players. Despite Reed's strong play, Seattle narrowly missed the playoffs during the first year of the Mike Macdonald Era.

Jarran Reed originally entered the league as a second-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. Selected by the Seattle Seahawks, the Alabama product started his career in a rotational role. Appearing in 15 games while making six starts, the rookie finished his inaugural season with 1.5 sacks, 34 tackles, one tackle-for-loss, and four quarterback hits. He turned this promising debut into a full-time starting job in 2017 and remained an effective if unremarkable starter throughout his rookie contract, recording a career-high 10.5 sacks in 2018.

Jarren Reed signed a two-year contract extension with Seattle, but only played one year on the extended deal. Following his release, the defensive tackle signed a one-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs. Starting all 17 games, Reed finished his lone season in Kansas City with 2.4 sacks, 43 tackles, two tackles-for-loss, and 12 quarterback hits. He then signed with the Green Bay Packers and had a similar season.

Following his two-year exodus, Reed returned to Seattle in 2023 and responded with one of his best seasons. Starting in 16 games, the former second-round pick finished the campaign with seven sacks, 54 tackles, 12 quarterback hits, and seven tackles-for-loss as Seattle narrowly missed the playoffs.
