NHL Predictions

Edmonton Oilers vs Buffalo Sabres

Head-to-Head: Oilers 1-0 Sabres

Time: 7 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT)

We open up NHL predictions with the Edmonton Oilers visiting the Buffalo Sabres. Stuart Skinner is the expected starter for the Oilers, but always check social media before locking in a daily fantasy starter. Edmonton is 4-6 in the last 10 games, but are coming into this matchup with two consecutive victories. Leon Draisaitl continues to put up big numbers with 46 goals and 49 assists for the Oilers.

Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen is the projected starter for a Buffalo team that's lost six consecutive games. Trying to contain Connor McDavid and Draisaitl will certainly not help trying to stop the bleeding. The Sabres are actually 15-14-3 at home so far this season. Tage Thompson has been a bright spit wuth 31 goals with 23 assists for Buffalo.

Buffalo played Edmonton tough last time out, but Edmonton should get the victory.

Prediction: Oilers win 4-1.

Detroit Red Wings vs Ottawa Senators

Head-to-Head: Red Wings 1-1 Senators

Time: 7:30 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT)

TV: Amazon Prime Video (Canada); Fan Duel Sports Detroit; ESPN+

We go to our featured game between the Red Wings and Senators, which has big Stanley Cup Playoff implications. Cam Talbot is the likely starter for the Red Wings, who are 3-6-1 in the last 10 games. This recent sour run includes five straight losses as Detroit tries to stem the tide. Lucas Raymond has collected 22 goals and 43 assists for the Red Wings.

Linus Ullmark is the projected starter for the Senators, who are 4-5-1 in the last 10 games. However, Ottawa has won two straight game entering this pivotal game for post-season positioning. German standout Tim Stutzle has registered 20 goals and 45 assists for the Senators.

Both teams need a victory, but Ottawa gets the victory in this important game.

Prediction: Senators win 4-2.

Chicago Blackhawks vs Colorado Avalanche

Head-to-Head: Blackhawks 2-0 Avalanche

Time: 9 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT)

TV: Chicago Sports Network +; Altitude; ESPN+

Prediction: Avalanche win 5-2.

Toronto Maple Leafs vs Utah Hockey Club

Head-to-Head: Maple Leafs 1-0 Utah HC

Time: 10 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT)

TV: Utah16; SNO; ESPN+

Our last game of NHL predictions has the Toronto Maple Leafs visiting the Utah Hockey Club. Anthony Stolarz is the expected starter for Toronto, which is 6-3-1 in the last 10 games. However, the Maple Leafs have dropped three consecutive games entering this matchup. John Tavares has been averaging over a point a game as of late with five goals and added six assists over the last 10 games.

Utah is projected to start Karel Vejmelka in between the pipes in this game. We're also seeing Utah playing some good hockey as of late with a 6-3-1 mark in the last 10 games. However, Utah is coming into this game after losing its last time out. Clayton Keller has been racking up the points as of late with five goals and 10 assists over the past 10 games.

These two teams have been playing well, but Toronto rebounds with the win.

Prediction: Maple Leafs win 5-3.

Today it was announced Andrew Copp had surgery to repair an injury to his left pectoral tendon. The timetable for his absence will be four to six months. With the Wings having been hot recently, it will be interesting to see what moves general manager Steve Yzerman has up his sleeves to potentially replace Copp in the lineup.

Detroit Red Wings Forward Andrew Copp Undergoes Surgery

Copp has established himself as a very dependable player in the league. Over the past number of seasons, three times he has been well above. The Ann Arbor, Michigan native has played for the Winnipeg Jets, New York Rangers and Red Wings over his 11-year NHL career. He has 10 goals and 13 assists for 23 points in 56 games this season. Copp has a Corsi for of 45.8 and a relative Corsi of -3.3.

The 30-year-old has 114 goals and 186 assists for 300 points in 700 career games. Winnipeg originally drafted him in the fourth round, 104th overall of the 2013 NHL Draft. Copp had a standout college career with his hometown University of Michigan.

He's also represented his home country of the United States at the international level. However, he had a pair of fifth-place finishes at the 2014 World Juniors and 2017 IIHF World Championships.

What it Means

Copp is a veteran presence on the Red Wings roster. He may not have been putting up the goals, but he's been good at the defensive end. The veteran is also a solid penalty-killer.

The move does free up some cap for the upcoming trade deadline. Yzerman may be able to go after another forward since he'll have more cap room.

Detroit is hoping to get back into the post-season for the first time in a while. However, Copp won't be along for the ride.

Husso, 29, brings experience to Anaheim after spending the past two seasons in Detroit. Originally drafted by the St. Louis Blues in 2014, the Finnish netminder broke into the NHL during the 2020-21 season and quickly established himself as a capable starting goaltender. His best season came in 2021-22 with the Blues when he posted a .919 save percentage and 2.56 goals against average (GAA) in 40 games, earning him a three-year, $14.25 million contract with the Red Wings. However, injuries and inconsistency plagued his tenure in Detroit, and he found himself in a crowded goaltending situation alongside Alex Lyon and James Reimer.

What it Means

For Anaheim, the addition of Husso provides goaltending depth, as John Gibson has been somewhat injury-plagued this season. While Gibson and Lukas Dostal remain the Ducks' starting tandem, Gibson's future with the team has been subject to trade speculation. Lukas Dostal has emerged this season as the number one going forward, but Anaheim will make sure they protect his usage. General Manager Pat Verbeek has shown a propensity to protect his assets with the way he handled Leo Carlsson's rookie season usage.  Husso’s presence offers the Ducks a reliable veteran option who can backstop with the San Diego Gulls or serve as a safety net should injuries arise.

The “future considerations” aspect of the trade suggests that Detroit was primarily looking to offload Husso’s contract, which carries a $4.75 million cap hit through the end of this season. Anaheim, with ample salary cap space, was in a position to absorb the deal without significant repercussions.

This trade presents a fresh opportunity for Husso to regain his form while giving Anaheim more flexibility in their goaltending situation as they continue their rebuild.

The Anaheim Ducks trade for goaltender Ville Husso from the Detroit Red Wings for future considerations, adding depth to their crease.

Anaheim Ducks Trade with Detroit Redwings

The Anaheim Ducks traded for Ville Husso, making a depth move between the pipes. They acquired the goaltender from the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for future considerations. The trade, announced earlier today, signals the Ducks looking to solidify their organizational goaltending depth as they look to solidify their crease moving forward. For the Red Wings, this is a cap space move as Ville Husso is on an expiring contract and has been playing this season in the minors with Grand Rapids.

NHL Predictions

Anaheim Ducks vs Detroit Red Wings

Head to Head: Ducks 1 - o Red Wings

Time: 6:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST)

TV: FDSNDETX; Victory+; KCOP-13; ESPN+

The Ducks (25-24-6) will play the second game of back-to-backs when they take on the Red Wings (28-22-4) at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, MI oFebruary 23. This is the second of two meetings between the former playoff rivals. Anaheim took the first game on November 15, 6-4. The Red Wings are holding onto their wild card position by a thread, while the Ducks are looking to climb into a wild card spot.

Detroit Red Wings Look to Extend Hot Streak

The red-winged wheel is on a roll. The Red Wings are 7-1-2 in their last 10 games with some high-quality wins against teams like Edmonton, Tampa Bay, and Los Angeles. They will need to continue the hot streak as only five points separate the wild card teams and the first three teams outside the playoffs in the East. The Wings are led by a couple Four Nations standouts in Lucas Raymond (61 pts) and Dylan Larkin (52 pts).  Don't forget about Alex DeBrincat as well. Debrincat leads the team with four goals and an impressive nine points in their previous five games. Detroit is also receiving quality goaltending from the Cam Talbot - Alex Lyon tandem. Talbot played last night against the Wild, so expect Lyon to get the nod tonight. Lyon has a 2.68 goals against average and .904 save percentage this season.

Anaheim Ducks Aim to Stay Hot Too

This game will be a battle of two of the hottest teams in the league right now. The Ducks continued their hot streak from before the break and defeated the Bruins 3 - 2 in OT last night. The Ducks have won four in a row and are 7-3 in their last 10 games. With that, they are now seven points and three and a half games out of a playoff spot. While it's impossible to point to one thing, the return of Trevor Zegras to the lineup seems to be a catalyst for the recent stretch of success. Leo Carlsson leads the Ducks with four assists and five points in their previous five games. Ducks fans will be happy to see the second-overall pick start to heat up.

One negative is John Gibson left the game against Boston early and seems to have suffered an upper-body injury. This is unfortunate for a number of reasons including how well he has been playing lately, and the value of his trade stock. The Ducks will hope it's nothing serious and can return in short order. With that, expect Lukas Dostal to get the nod against Detroit. Dostal has a 2.86 goals against average and a .911 save percentage this season.

Prediction

The Ducks look to extend their win streak to five games, but they’ll have their hands full against a surging Red Wings squad. Expect Dylan Larkin to strike early for Detroit, capitalizing on their lethal power play, but Ryan Strome will respond with a slick feed to Troy Terry. With Lukas Dostal and Alex Lyon between the pipes, this one will stay tight late into the third. Lucas Raymond finds the back of the net off a feed from Patrick Kane late to seal a 2-1 win for the Red Wings, extending their impressive run toward the playoffs.

Prediction: Red Wings win 2-1

The team is only eight points out of the final Western Conference playoff spot. However, the team's inconsistent play since New Year's shows the team may not be ready for a playoff push. The Blues have thought this, too, as they have already parted ways with veteran Brandon Saad.  Suppose the Blues are committed to shifting their focus to the 2025-26 season. In that case, they should take advantage of the apparent interest in their captain, Brayden Schenn

Blues Should Take Advantage of Apparent Interest in Their Captain

Who is Interested?

The first mention of a team being interested in Schenn came last week. Darren Dreger on Insider Trading mentioned the Toronto Maple Leafs were interested in the former All-Star. Furthermore, Elliotte Friedman, in 32 Thoughts: The Podcast, believes the Vegas Golden Knights could also be interested in Schenn.

"I don't know if they have what St. Louis wants, but the team that immediately jumped into my mind was Vegas," he said. "Toronto, sure, because we know Toronto's looking for a centre, and that's a [Brad] Treliving kind of guy, but Vegas really jumped in my mind, because Brayden Schenn played for [Golden Knights GM] Kelly McCrimmon in the Western Hockey League. And you don't underestimate Kelly McCrimmon — when he decides he wants someone, he will do what it takes to try and get that person."

Furthermore, Michael DeRosa of the Hockey News has also listed the Detroit Red Wings and New Jersey Devils as potential landing spots for the Blues captain. There could be other teams that have not been mentioned and are interested in the former 20-goal scorer.

This is the first time since the 2022-23 season that the Blues have someone gathering great interest in trade talks. Two years ago, the Blues were able to trade Vladimir Tarasenko, Ryan O'Reilly, and Ivan Barbashev for a decent haul that started the retool. Currently, general manager Doug Armstrong can do the same with Schenn.

Schenn Adds Value to Any Team

This season, the 33-year-old has scored 11 goals. The veteran has played well in a top-six role, mainly as the second-line centre. Furthermore, Schenn was the first-line centre when the Blues won the Stanley Cup in 2019. The centre scored three goals in the Stanley Cup Final, including a back-breaking goal in the third period of Game 7.

In addition to his offence, Schenn uses his body to make plays. He is not afraid to drop the gloves to stand up for a teammate. He has been a respected member of the Blues locker room since he joined the team, and that respect and leadership would carry over to a new team.

Armstrong Rightfully Setting a High Price

It has been reported that Armstrong is asking for a significant return for Schenn. Considering what Schenn offers and the number of teams expressing interest, that makes sense. Another first-round pick in the upcoming draft is a good starting point.

The rising salary cap could also help the Blues in this situation. Schenn has three years left on his contract with a cap hit of $6.5 million a season, and a rising salary cap makes that $6.5 million easier to take on. In addition, if a team still wanted the Blues to retain some salary, the amount retained may not be as much as it would have been prior.

Armstrong Needs to Take Advantage and Pull the Trigger

The Blues can get a decent haul in return for their captain. This is something Armstrong has to take advantage of. Trading Schenn would check a lot of boxes for the Blues. It would clear up additional salary from the team's cap. Secondly, the return package could include high-draft picks and/or prospects. Lastly, trading Schenn would free up a roster spot for a younger player to take and get some NHL experience. If Schenn were traded, it would create the perfect opportunity to call up Dalibor Dvorsky

Trading away a leader like Schenn would be challenging, but the Blues are not going anywhere meaningful right now. There is a golden opportunity that was not available a few months ago. A move like this has the potential to drastically speed up the retool.

Armstrong has orchestrated some brilliant trades in his career. The time is now to do it again.

The NHL will be on a break with the Four Nations Faceoff coming in the next few days. However, general managers will be busy making moves or at least setting the framework for them. There are a number of teams that are on the borderline of contention. This means some tough decisions may be on the horizon for some team executives. One team that's on the edge of contention that may make a move is the Detroit Red Wings. This edition of NHL rumours talks about how one forward could be moved.

All NHL rumours come from the original source and are subject to change.

NHL Rumours

Detroit Red Wings May Trade Forward

Rumour: In the latest edition of Saturday's Headlines on Hockey Night in Canada, Elliotte Friedman said that Vladimir Tarasenko might be the subject of trade talks.

Analysis: Tarasenko was signed by the Red Wings in the off-season to a two-year deal. However, it doesn't seem like the move has been a good fit. The veteran Russian inked a deal with $4.75 million cap hit in the off-season. This contract comes with a full no-movement clause. That no-trade clause drops to an eight-team list in the 2025-26 season.

Friedman said this one was a bit of a surprise, but he's heard some noise surrounding Tarasenko. Detroit has gotten better this season and are holding the last of the two Wild Card spots in the Eastern Conference heading into Sunday's games.

One would think the Red Wings would love to hang onto a talented veteran. However, he's only scored seven goals this season. Detroit has a younger team, but this veteran hasn't been able to find his way.

Red Wings General Manager Steve Yzerman has been tinkering with the lineup. However, he might be able to spin Tarasenko for an asset at the upcoming deadline.

What it Means

Tarasenko is a two-time Stanley Cup winner and hit his milestone 300th goal against the Tampa Bay Lightning. However, he's bounced around the league the last few seasons.

The Russian winger has been traded at the deadline a couple of times in and around the trade deadline. One would think he would be safe being on a contending team and with a two-year deal. However, it may be a familiar case of him getting dealt at the deadline again.

Friedman mentioned that anything is likely in the early stages. However, that doesn't mean a deal won't happen. The Sportsnet insider said he will see how this develops, but there could be some things in the offing.

Detroit is under pressure to finally make the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since the 2016-17 season. The Wings just missed out last season and don't want to deal with the pain of missing out again.

Trading Tarasenko may not be ideal, but Yzerman may be able to spin this into getting some assets that may help now or in the future. However, we'll monitor this situation as it draws closer to the deadline.

NHL Predictions

Columbus Blue Jackets vs Dallas Stars

Time: 6 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST)

TV: Victory; Fan Duel Sports Ohio; ESPN+

We open NHL predictions with the surprising Columbus Blue Jackets visiting the Dallas Stars. The Blue Jackets will go with Elvis Merzlikins  in goal. Columbus is 7-2-1 in the last 10 games and have taken its last three games entering this matchup. Kent Johnson been averaging nearly a point a game with four goals and five assists over the past 10 games.

Jake Oettinger is the expected starter for the Stars. However, always check social media before locking in a daily fantasy starter. Dallas has been playing pretty well in its own right with a 6-4 mark in its last 10. This includes four straight victories entering this game. Wyatt Johnston has been red-hot as of late with four goals and nine assists over the last 10 games.

Both teams are playing well, but Dallas gets the win at home.

Prediction: Stars win 4-3.

Vegas Golden Knights vs New York Rangers

Head-to-Head: Golden Knights 0-1 Rangers

Time: 6 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST)

TV: MSG; Scripps Vegas; Sportsnet; SN 360; ESPN+

Our second game of NHL predictions has the Vegas Golden Knights taking on the New York Rangers. Vegas is projected to go with Adin Hill in goal for this matchup. The Knights are 3-4-3 in the last 10 games and have two consecutive losses. Tomas Hertl has been playing well as of late with nine goals and five assists over the last 10 games.

New York is likely to go with Jonathan Quick in the blue paint for this game. The Rangers are 5-3-2 in the last 10 games, but have dropped the last three games. J.T. Miller had a Broadway revival with two goals on Saturday. However, the Rangers were beaten soundly by the Boston Bruins.

Both clubs are struggling, but the Knights have just a bit more talent on paper.

Prediction: Golden Knights win 4-2.

Detroit Red Wings vs Vancouver Canucks

Head-to-Head: Red Wings 0-1 Canucks

Time: 8 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST)
