After only hours, reports came out that NC State would hire Will Wade to lead the Wolfpack in the 2025-26 season. While Wade has been all over the place over his career, this seems like a logical step for Wade and the Wolfpack. NC State desperately needs a coach to bring elite stability, and Wade is searching for another crack at a power-conference job. Overall, this seems like a Pat Kelsey-like hire for NC State, which should be a good sign for Wolfpack fans and the ACC.

NC State to Hire McNeese's Will Wade: What's The Grade?

Wade's Successful Career

The biggest question with Wade revolves around his NCAA violations that led to his suspension. In an era where NIL didn't exist, Wade made some monetary donations to players. While this was illegal at the time, it certainly doesn't affect his reputation as much now because players can be paid. NC State will hire Wade because of the dramatic success that he has seen on the court. Any program that hired him would need to examine the same allegations and determine whether one could look past them. McNeese first made that decision, and NC State has decided similarly.

Wade began his career at Chattanooga, where he stayed for two years and won 40 games. He then moved to VCU, where he won 51 games in two seasons and led the Rams to the NCAA Tournament both seasons. After his successful stay, he moved to LSU, where he led the Tigers to the NCAA Tournament three times in five seasons (he likely would have led them to the tournament in 2020 as well). Following his suspension and removal from LSU, he moved to McNeese. He has led McNeese to 57 wins in just two seasons, earning NCAA Tournament berths in both seasons. He has a 253-106 record in 11 seasons as a coach.

NC State Gets an Elite Talent

McNeese is certainly not Duke, yet he has turned them into a team that's capable of beating most teams in the country. They gave stiff tests to Alabama and Mississippi State earlier this season and even finished 58th in the NET rankings. The numbers aren't flashy, ranking in the 60s in both offensive and defensive efficiency. In Wade's last season at LSU, he led the Tigers to the sixth-best defensive efficiency in college basketball. The season prior, LSU finished with the fifth-best offensive efficiency and ranked fourth in 2020. The moral of the story is that he will bring an elite offense to Raleigh and has proven to bring elite defense to the table as well with the right group around him.

NC State Hires Will Wade: The Grade

Will Wade was a popular name. He will probably be watched closely while at NC State. Big programs may look to steal him from the Wolfpack. He has the coaching ability to lead a strong program. Wade brings wins with him wherever he goes. It should be no different in Raleigh. With the hire of Wade, NC State is venturing into the territory of elite coaching. This is not only an elite hire, he may just change this program around following Kevin Keatts' firing. He may not be the next Pat Kelsey, but Wade can turn this program around quickly. It will be easier in such a dysfunctional ACC.

Clemson’s Flop or Final Four Potential in the NCAA Tournament https://lastwordonsports.com/basketball/2025/03/19/clemsons-flop-or-final-four/ https://lastwordonsports.com/basketball/2025/03/19/clemsons-flop-or-final-four/#respond Wed, 19 Mar 2025 19:23:37 +0000 https://lastwordonsports.com/basketball/?p=129608 The beauty of March Madness lies in that second word: madness. Upsets shock the world. Who expected UMBC to knock off Virginia? Who had St. Peter's in the Elite Eight? Did anybody expect VCU to make a run from the First Four to the Final Four? Some people fill out their brackets and put those drastic upsets in there, but they are certainly the minority. How about the potential of teams like Clemson? They already beat Duke in a thriller but lost to Georgia Tech shortly before that game. So, which Clemson team will show up against the dangerous Cinderella McNeese? Will Clemson's NCAA Tournament stay be short? Or will they live up to their potential and make a run to the Final Four?

Clemson's Flop or Final Four Potential in the NCAA Tournament

Why Clemson Might Flop

McNeese is a good team. Last year, they were one of the teams that many people picked as a Cinderella candidate. Their NET ranking of 58 is impressive for their conference. They win games and have played some outstanding teams in tough games. Alabama only beat them by eight at home. Mississippi State escaped them by three at a neutral site. McNeese is a tough out for anybody. They will bring everything the Tigers can handle and make Clemson play a close game. Now, Clemson has been able to win a lot of games, several of them close, but it's always a heavier burden in March.

Clemson also has the 35th-best three-point percentage in college basketball. Their three-point ability may decide their NCAA Tournament hopes. They don't rely heavily on the three, but if they go cold, they could lose a tough game. McNeese is 89th in three-point defense, a respectable number. Clemson will need to hit their open threes. If they can't hit those shots, the paint becomes extremely crowded in March. Clemson could find themselves back on campus before they want to.

Why Clemson Might Make a Final Four Run

Remember that Clemson beat down New Mexico last season after many people had the Lobos beating the Tigers. They've already beaten Kentucky and Duke this season. Those are the two best opponents they've faced, and they brought their very best in both of those contests. Clemson can turn up the offensive and defensive pressure against some of the best teams in college basketball. Duke has only lost one game since November, and it came to the Tigers. Clemson will face good opponents throughout the NCAA Tournament, but they must not look ahead. If they focus on each team and bring their A-game, they will be a tough out.

Let's name some of the teams that have a top-25 rating in both offensive and defensive efficiency according to Kenpom: Duke, Florida, Auburn, Houston, and Tennessee. Those are five of the top six seeds in the NCAA Tournament. However, six teams qualify here. Who's the last team? Clemson. Yes, Clemson is the team grouped with what most people consider to be serious championship contenders. They have elite ability on both sides of the court, giving them a chance against anybody, including the one-seed in their group, Houston. Clemson should be considered a serious threat to make the Final Four.

Predicting Clemson's NCAA Tournament

Clemson has a Final Four run in them. They made the Elite Eight last season. They will have to make up for an injury to Dillon Hunter, but that will be more motivation. Clemson will beat McNeese in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. High Point has a good chance to upset Purdue, but I have Purdue advancing and losing to Clemson. Gonzaga is a dangerous team, but give me Houston to come through that section and play Clemson, where the Tigers shock the world. Matchups will play a huge role in the Elite Eight. Clemson matches up well against Tennessee. They beat Kentucky, but revenge games are always harder. Illinois is also a threat to lose early or go far. Clemson can win this game to go to the Final Four, but anything less than a Sweet Sixteen appearance would be disappointing for the Tigers.

Though Rutgers was unable to put together a season worthy of an appearance in the NCAA Tournament, both players will enter the 2025 NBA Draft as consensus top-three prospects. On top of that, Harper and Bailey became the first Big Ten duo to score 500+ points each in a single season since former Michigan "Fab Five" members Chris Webber and Jalen Rose.

Notably, Webber and Rose were both lottery picks. In fact, Webber went on to be a Rookie of the Year award winner, five-time All-Star and Hall of Fame inductee. Now, Harper and Bailey get to try to do the same.

Rutgers' Dylan Harper Shares His Ace Bailey Scouting Report

Their season now over, Harper and Bailey can focus on this summer's NBA Draft, working on their games and bodies. People that have been dissecting their tape all year will eventually get a chance to see them in individual settings. The testing they undergo at the NBA Draft Combine could lead to some adjustments in their assessments.

With that being said, Harper already has a scouting report for Bailey, which he shared with For The Win's Bryan Kalbrosky.

"My favorite part about him is the joy he brings to the game," Harper says of Bailey. "No matter what is going on, he is going to have high energy and things like that."

However, while Bailey's intangibles are what he's enjoyed the most, his skillset has sparkled as well.

"He is one of those guys who, at 6-foot-10, you can give the ball to him and he can get a bucket at will," Harper tells Kalbrosky. "That’s really him. He knows how to use his body and get to his spots. There’s no complaints about playing with him at all."

"(Bailey's) is a twitchy player," he adds. "He is tall, lanky, and he is such a presence throughout the game whether it’s rebounding or defending or getting a bucket. He is going to do what you need him to do."

Harper's evaluation more or less matches the general consensus. His combination of length and shot-making ability has given him the feel of a star-caliber prospect. Nobody knows what heights he'll ultimately reach.

However, his physical tools and guard skills shouldn't be overlooked by anyone.

More Than Meets The Eye

There's one aspect of basketball where the lines between intangible and tangible skills are blurred: IQ.

Nobody can really see how intelligent another person is. Though there are tests that can assess crystallized memory and the like, intellect isn't quite like height or weight. There's not a universal way to measure it; cultural differences often making the concept of IQ more subjective than objective.

Nonetheless, players with a high basketball IQ often have a level of awareness and processing that allows them to be quicker or better decision-makers.

On the court, this can result in tangible differences. In terms of ball-movement, they may have a higher assist rate or lower turnover rate. In terms of defense, they may find it easier to anticipate their matchup's movement or to call out a play their opponent is running.

Because of Bailey's low assist rate, there might be some amateur or professional scouts who question his basketball IQ. However, according to Harper, the 18-year-old "is a very high IQ player."

"He sees things before they happen."

For those who have watched Bailey, it's evident that his assist numbers don't completely reflect his abilities.

For starters, he often makes passes that would've resulted in an assist if his teammates had converted the attempt. Furthermore, he isn't always looking to make the pass that will lead to a basket. Swinging the rock around might not lead to an assist but it ultimately helps the offense find the best shot.

Bailey could certainly stand to sharpen up in terms of his precision. However, he's still demonstrated the potential to be a floor-raiser as a facilitator.

Harper’s evaluation more or less matches the general consensus. His combination of length and shot-making ability has given him the feel of a star-caliber prospect. Nobody knows what heights he’ll ultimately reach.

However, his physical tools and guard skills shouldn’t be overlooked by anyone.

More Than Meets The Eye

There’s one aspect of basketball where the lines between intangible and tangible skills are blurred: IQ.

Nobody can really see how intelligent another person is. Though there are tests that can assess crystallized memory and the like, intellect isn’t quite like height or weight. There’s not a universal way to measure it; cultural differences often making the concept of IQ more subjective than objective.

Nonetheless, players with a high basketball IQ often have a level of awareness and processing that allows them to be quicker or better decision-makers.

On the court, this can result in tangible differences. In terms of ball-movement, they may have a higher assist rate or lower turnover rate. In terms of defense, they may find it easier to anticipate their matchup’s movement or to call out a play their opponent is running.

Because of Bailey’s low assist rate, there might be some amateur or professional scouts who question his basketball IQ. However, according to Harper, the 18-year-old “is a very high IQ player.”

“He sees things before they happen.”

For those who have watched Bailey, it’s evident that his assist numbers don’t completely reflect his abilities.

For starters, he often makes passes that would’ve resulted in an assist if his teammates had converted the attempt. Furthermore, he isn’t always looking to make the pass that will lead to a basket. Swinging the rock around might not lead to an assist but it ultimately helps the offense find the best shot.

Bailey could certainly stand to sharpen up in terms of his precision. However, he’s still demonstrated the potential to be a floor-raiser as a facilitator.

Primarily because they play the Big Ten Tournament Championship on Selection Sunday. As has been the case for years, the winner of that tournament has more often than not found itself in a less-than-desirable draw for March Madness.

That was again the case this year, as the Michigan Wolverines made a run of three wins in three days against some of the best teams in the Big Ten. Only to find themselves at a lower seed than the teams they beat. It only further proved that the conference needs a change.

It's Time to Change When the Big Ten Tournament is Played

It isn't that much of an ask, really when it comes down to it. Heck even just one day early might make all the difference. The Wolverines aren't the only team this has ever bitten. More often than not winning the Big Ten tournament doesn't help a deep run in March Madness.

That might be a bigger league problem than anything. But in this case, Michigan got a five-seed after winning the Big Ten tournament and beating Purdue, Maryland, and Wisconsin. Each of those teams ended up with a better seed. The Badgers got a three-seed, and the Terrapins and Boilermakers each were selected as four-seeds.

https://twitter.com/B1GMBBall/status/1901404663951306906

I'm not saying they are better off, but it does continue to prove that the Big Ten Tournament means nothing at this point. Whether you win it or not, Big Ten teams have been getting a rough draw so to say ever. Maybe that's why the league has won it all since Michigan State did in 2000.

Selection Committee Defends Placement of Big Ten Teams

The NCAA selection committee certainly made it seem that the Big Ten team's placements were already set in stone before Sunday's final, which has been the case in my opinion for years. The chairman of the selection committee Bubba Cunningham, was asked by CBS Sports Matt Norlander about the way the bracket shook out for the Big Ten. He stood by the reason that they had plans for both Wisconsin and Michigan depending on who had won Sunday's game.

"No, that's always the last tournament that completes. We had contingency brackets based on Wisconsin winning or based on Michigan winning, and they did get scrubbed up assuming they had won in the contingency bracket that we had reviewed. That game was important... And it was considered by the entire committee." Cunningham said.

Whatever you say. If it truly matters, I think Michigan would've been closer to a four-seed than a five, not to mention the Badgers wouldn't have been two seeds higher, given the Wolverines beat them in both meetings this season.

History of Winning Conference Tourney and Losing Early in NCAA's

Is Michigan going to make a deep run? They could, but just because they won the Big Ten Tournament doesn't guarantee a thing. If you look back over the years, winning this conference's league tournament hasn't resulted in very many trips deep into the tournament.

Since 1999, only seven Big Ten Tournament champions have reached the Final Four. The trend is even worse since the 2021 tournament. Last season's Big Ten Tournament champions Illinois was the team that has gotten the furthest as they reached the Elite Eight, in the last five seasons now.

Can Michigan break that trend? It's going to be hard. One thing is for sure: the lack of success after winning a Big Ten Tournament is less than ideal. Look how much hope the 2016 Michigan State team had coming off winning this tournament just to lose to 15-seeded Middle Tennessee. Or even in 2023 when FDU took down No. 1 seeded Purdue in the first round.

It's clear that the Big Ten needs to change up when the Big Ten Tournament finishes. Maybe then the league will get some respect from the committee. We shouldn't been going on 26 years since winning the National Title. This conference deserves better.

Why Duke Will Win the 2025 National Championship https://lastwordonsports.com/basketball/2025/03/18/duke-2025-national-championship/ https://lastwordonsports.com/basketball/2025/03/18/duke-2025-national-championship/#respond Tue, 18 Mar 2025 22:10:54 +0000 https://lastwordonsports.com/basketball/?p=129429 The hype has been building all season. Since the moment Cooper Flagg committed to the Blue Devils, Duke has had one goal: winning a national championship. Flagg's debut was everything people expected it to be. However, after taking early losses to Kansas and Kentucky, people thought Duke couldn't handle the pressure and win the national championship in 2025.

Those people weren't expecting the turnaround that happened in Durham. They've lost just one game since, a road test against Clemson. That includes a win over the number one overall seed, Auburn. Duke has looked unstoppable at times and even won the ACC Championship without Cooper Flagg. Flagg will likely be back for the NCAA Tournament, making Duke a favorite to win the 2025 national championship. Get your brackets ready: the signs are here for why Duke will win it all.

Why Duke Will Win the 2025 National Championship

Incredible Supporting Cast

How many teams can boast multiple top-10 picks in the upcoming NBA draft as role players? That's where Kon Knueppel and Khaman Maluach will likely find themselves drafted. Knueppel could be a bonified star on virtually any other team in the country and is the number two option on the Blue Devils. Tyrese Proctor has elite shooting ability and brings a strong veteran presence to such a young squad. Sion James brings that same level of competitive fire and veteran presence to the point guard position. Maliq Brown is one of the best defenders in the country when he is not injured. Mason Gillis just made a run to the 2024 national championship game with Purdue. No team is deeper (and taller) than the Blue Devils. Duke's 2025 national championship will only happen because of its strong depth.

Stifling Defense, Electric Offense

Duke's KenPom ratings only tell part of the story, but it's quite the tale. Only one team ranks in the top five in both offensive and defensive efficiency. On defense, their elite size keeps the passing lanes small. Shots are always contested, and turnovers and blocks flow freely. The Blue Devils can switch at every single position to create lethal defensive pressure. Offensively they flow so smoothly with three or four players who can drive to the basket at any given time. That leaves a lot of open shots on the outside or dunks on the inside. When their offense is humming, it's nearly impossible to stop them.

The Superstar

Duke's 2025 national championship run relies on depth, but it would be nothing without their superstar. Flagg has been stirring the pot in NBA mock drafts for months. He scores at an elite rate, rebounds well, is a championship-level defender, can play point guard if necessary, and has that killer instinct to take over. When all is said and done, he should win National Player of the Year this season because of everything he does. Flagg receives more attention than any player in the country and is just as productive as any player in the country on a team that hasn't lost in four months. His injury immediately brought their championship hopes far down. However, with him in the lineup, after the injury turned out to be more minor than originally expected, they immediately jumped to co-favorites with Auburn. Only he can have that impact.

Duke: The 2025 National Champions

Duke is loaded, their star is elite. Their path is more manageable than some other top seeds. Nothing less than a championship will suffice. And truly, they should be the favorite. I wouldn't pick a single team to beat them right now except maybe Auburn, who they already beat. They may not have the Q1 wins Auburn has to earn them the number one overall seed, but they are the best team in the country. Ultimately, I like Duke's chances to bring the 2025 national championship trophy home to Durham.

The Big Ten has famously not won the National Title since 2000 with Michigan State. So the 25-plus-year drought has to end sometime right? Why not this year? Let's take a closer look at the ceiling and floors for each of the eight teams who are dancing in March Madness.

Which team has the best chance of reaching the Final Four? Does Tom Izzo have the team finally? What about Dusty May's suddenly red-hot Wolverines? Let's dive in.

The Floor and Ceiling for Each Big Ten Team in the 2025 NCAA Tournament

Illinois - Six Seed in Midwest Region

The Fighting Illini are finally healthy. It might be the perfect time for Brad Underwood's team. Illinois reached its first Elite Eight in 2024, for the first time since 2005 when they reached the National Championship Game. Is this team Final Four good? They have the talent, with the three freshmen Kasparas Jakucionis, Will Riley, and Tomislav Ivisic. Not to mention Morez Johnson Jr is officially back in the lineup after missing the last month of the season with a wrist injury.

This team will need its veterans to make it farther than the first weekend of the NCAA Tourney. The ceiling is Elite Eight, as for the floor for Illinois, Round of 32 in my opinion.

Maryland - Four Seed in West Region

This team fought like hell in their Big Ten Tournament semifinal game with Michigan. Blowing it defensively on a last-second lay-up made by the Wolverines was a killer. The "Crab Five" as the Terps starting five is so fondly referred to is elite but their bench will have to step it up. They have a star in Big Ten Freshman of the Year Derik Queen. He proved it with his 31-point performance against the Wolverines. How will he fair in his first and likely only NCAA Tourney run? Maryland can make the case they have the best starting five of all the Big Ten teams in the Big Dance. The ceiling for this team is the Final Four. The floor is the Sweet 16.

https://twitter.com/TerrapinHoops/status/1901438610991087737

Michigan - Five Seed in South Region

The Wolverines have new energy after winning the Big Ten Tournament. However, they feel a little slighted after being seeded fifth in the South Region. Tre Donaldson showed off some clutch playmaking as he helped lead the Wolverines to wins over Purdue, Maryland, and Wisconsin to win the conference tournament. Vladislav Goldin was able to earn Big Ten Tournament MVP. They will need that effort and more with UC San Diego as their opening foe in the NCAA Tournament.

Turnovers have been a problem for Michigan all season, and unfortunately, they get a Tritons team that ranks near the very top in the country in forcing turnovers. If Michigan turns it over more than 10 times, they could easily be going home after the first round. Dusty May has found a little magic lately, so the ceiling for this team is the Sweet 16. But their floor is bowing out in the Round of 64.

https://twitter.com/umichbball/status/1901399211238998315

Michigan State - Two Seed in South Region

Losing to Wisconsin in the Big Ten semifinals doesn't hurt at all. The Big Ten regular season Champions are right where they want to be. Tom Izzo's success as a two-seed is pretty strong. Only one time were the Spartans bounced by a 15, in the 2016 NCAA tourney by Middle Tennessee. Every other time they've been a two, they have reached the Final Four. Jase Richardson has become 'the guy' for this team. The depth and the team's ability to rebound are only going to help get this team going. Not to mention the shooting is coming around. The Spartans feel like the Big Ten's best chance to cut the nets down. The ceiling for MSU is the Final Four. The Floor is the Sweet 16 to me. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.

https://twitter.com/MSU_Basketball/status/1901427096800334323

Oregon - Five Seed in East Region

A big year for the Ducks in their first season in the Big Ten. They were able to win some big games en route to grabbing a five-seed in the East region. It was an interesting season, to say the least. They had some ups and downs, especially against some of the other teams from the Big Ten that also made the NCAA Tourney. Nate Bittle has turned into the top dog for this team. Jackson Stelstad has a March Madness legend in the making written all over him. Can he deliver? We will see. Liberty isn't the easiest of draws, especially with the commonality of a 12-seed upsetting a five. The Ducks' ceiling is the Sweet 16, in my opinion, but their floor could just as easily be the Round of 64.

https://twitter.com/OregonMBB/status/1901412736720072961

Purdue - Four Seed in Midwest Region

Last year's National Runner-Up hasn't had its best season this year. Finishing sixth in the Big Ten was a step back. However, Braden Smith showcased his all-around ability this season. He was rewarded with Big Ten Player of the Year and first-team All-American honors from the Associated Press. He's got a great running mate in Trey Kaufman-Renn. But where the heck has Fletcher Loyer been? It's like he's completely disappeared.

Sorry to say I don't like the direction the Boilermakers are trending coming into the NCAA tournament. High Point appears to be a huge pick to upset Purdue in the first round. Though if Purdue plays to their best ability, I think the ceiling is the Elite Eight. The floor is the third first-round exit in the last five seasons.

https://twitter.com/BoilerBall/status/1901429356980818073

UCLA - Seven Seed in Midwest Region

The lowest-seeded Big Ten team will need to be firing on all cylinders for coach Mick Cronin. Toughness has been a question mark for much of the season, but the Bruins have the talent to make some kind of run. Having a guy like Tyler Bilodeau who is averaging 40 percent from the three has to make them feel hopeful. Not to mention Kobe Johnson has been really strong defensively.

UCLA will have to dig deep and find some toughness, especially with the Utah State Aggies as their opening foe. The ceiling for this squad is the Round of 32, especially with Tennesse as the two-seed in their part of the bracket. The floor is losing their opening game against the Aggies.

https://twitter.com/UCLAMBB/status/1901430631462244830

Wisconsin - Three Seed in East Region

Despite falling short after going ice cold against Michigan in the Big Ten tournament final. Wisconsin still has a great lineup. They are the true definition of life and die by the three. John Tonje is a superstar, but can he make the shots like he did against Michigan State in Indianapolis? This team cannot afford to go cold from three. Like the Spartans, a deep run is there for the taking.

John Blackwell proved to be a huge second option behind Tonje. The Final Four is likely the ceiling for the Badgers. As for the floor, I think the Sweet 16 is very reachable. They could even push Alabama for the Elite Eight.

Wisconsin – Three Seed in East Region

First Four to Final Four: Is There a Miracle NCAA Tournament Run? https://lastwordonsports.com/basketball/2025/03/18/first-four-to-final-four/ https://lastwordonsports.com/basketball/2025/03/18/first-four-to-final-four/#respond Tue, 18 Mar 2025 15:35:04 +0000 https://lastwordonsports.com/basketball/?p=129372 The NCAA Tournament expanded to 68 teams and added the First Four in 2011. Since then, teams like VCU in 2011 made a run from Dayton to the Final Four. UCLA nearly ended Gonzaga's undefeated season in 2021 if it weren't for a buzzer-beating heave from Jalen Suggs. There will always be much debate about who gets into the tournament, but these teams often make runs more consistently than other seeds do. There is something to be said about the momentum a team can pick up when playing a similar-level opponent. A 13-seed doesn't get the chance to play a fellow 13-seed before they play a four-seed. These matchups allow momentum, something that becomes dangerous to all higher seeds.

North Carolina squeaked their way into the NCAA Tournament. San Diego State lost three of their last six games to find their way in Dayton. Texas finished 6-12 in SEC play, earning their spot because of two wins in the SEC Tournament. Xavier earned their bid by winning seven of their last eight games. However, each of these teams has an additional chip on their shoulder. Most of these teams have had arguments against why they should be in over West Virginia. For that reason, it seems entirely possible that these First Four games have plenty of drama, and possibly see a miracle run to the Final Four from one of their victors. So who is most likely to make that run?

First Four to Final Four: Is There a Miracle NCAA Tournament Run?

4. San Diego State

The Aztecs showed early in the season that they could beat top-tier opponents by beating Houston. However, those games in November seem so long ago. The Aztecs have amassed only one Q1 win since that time. They play in the weakest conference out of the First Four teams, and they haven't been playing particularly well against them either. San Diego State has made miracle runs before, making it to the championship game in 2023. However, this team is not that squad. San Deigo State finished that season with the fourth-ranked defensive efficiency, according to KenPom. They sit at 13th this season, which is still a great number if their offense didn't rank 111th. Defense wins championships, but that offense is the worst in the at-large pool and worse than several of the auto bids in the NCAA Tournament.

3. Xavier

Xavier certainly doesn't have a glaring weakness like San Diego State does, and they have been playing well lately. However, these Cinderella runs often come from an elite offense or defense. Xavier is 52nd in offensive and 44th in defensive efficiency. Neither is a glaring weakness, but neither will put them over the edge. Only the proven ability to win big games would convince me to rank this team higher. However, Xavier is 1-9 in Q1 games. They haven't been able to pull off any big wins recently and rode their way into a tournament on a long win streak against Q2 and Q3 opponents. Teams always surprise me, and Sean Miller is a great coach. It just doesn't seem like this year is their year to make a deep run from the First Four.

2. Texas

There will undoubtedly be some controversy about this one, but my logic is consistent. That is besides the fact that Texas and North Carolina are incredibly close to each other in this ranking. They both could make deep runs. Texas marks the start of the legitimate Final Four threats because of their ability to win big games. They racked up seven Q1 wins.

However, one thing puts me off: they have a losing record against Q1 and Q2. Most teams end up with a losing record against Q1, but they usually make up for it with a great record against Q2. Texas is 3-5 against Q2 opponents. They can beat most teams in the NCAA Tournament field, but they also could realistically lose their First Four game on Wednesday. Nobody would be that surprised. Do we get the team that lost to South Carolina by 15, or the team that beat Texas A&M in the SEC Tournament?

1. North Carolina

I wouldn't have been surprised to see North Carolina out of the NCAA Tournament field, even though I did predict their inclusion on Friday before they played Duke. I also wouldn't have been surprised if Hubert Davis was fired if they missed the tournament only a month ago (before they came out and said that he would stay). However, North Carolina finds themselves in the First Four. In one sense, their 1-12 record in Q1 doesn't make too many people worried about a run. On the other hand, they certainly had their opportunities. They lost at Kansas (7-seed) by three, neutral-site vs. Michigan State (2) in OT by three, neutral-site vs. Florida (1) by six, and neutral-site to Duke (1) by three. The Tar Heels haven't been able to close the door. But the talent they have shows that they can beat virtually anybody in the NCAA Tournament field.

Will an NCAA Tournament Team go From the First Four to the Final Four?

I would give it about a 15% chance of happening, which is high for those who doubt it. North Carolina and Texas have a chip on their shoulder with how they received a bid. They have the talent and ability to beat virtually any team they come across. Don't be surprised if they make it to the Elite Eight. However, this set of one-seeds is incredibly tough. North Carolina would need to beat Auburn, a team they lost to by 13 if Auburn wasn't eliminated earlier. It's unlikely. Texas would need to beat Houston, a team that has lost one game since November (by one point). The hope for them is an upset. Louisville or Creighton will pose a tough test for Auburn and never count out Gonzaga against Houston.
