Liverpool, serial winners of various cups and trophies, go up against a Newcastle United side who haven’t won a domestic trophy in seventy years in the Carabao Cup Final at Wembley on Sunday. With a few selection headaches through injury and suspension, here’s a look at how we think Eddie Howe will set his team up for this one.
Newcastle Predicted Lineup vs Liverpool for Carabao Cup Final
How Newcastle Have Lined Up Recently
He’s been in and out of the side recently, but goalkeeper Nick Pope was given the nod in a strong side Newcastle side that got a vital win over West Ham in their last game before the final. With Lewis Hall facing surgery on a long-term foot injury, Kieran Trippier has come in to the right back slot while Tino Livramento moves across to the left.

Dan Burn’s outstanding season for Newcastle has resulted in a much-deserved call up to Thomas Tuchel’s first England squad, a real boost for the player going into such a showpiece occasion. Yet another clean sheet was gained at the London Stadium against West Ham where Burn played alongside Fabian Schar. Howe will be pleased that his preferred midfield trio of Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Joelinton came through unscathed against West Ham. These three can compete with the best in the Premier League.
Anthony Gordon A Big Loss
It’s a huge blow to Newcastle’s hopes of winning the trophy that Anthony Gordon will miss the game through suspension. However, it opens the door unexpectedly for Harvey Barnes who was given almost 80 minutes against West Ham. Hopefully there will be no reaction after his recent layoff. Jacob Murphy has been so consistent for Newcastle this season on the right-hand side and his understanding with the main goal threat, Alexander Isak, is crucial for a Geordie success story at Wembley.
Newcastle Recent Form and Tactics
It doesn’t bode well for the Magpies when you think that in recent games, they have lost to both Manchester City and Liverpool away from home without scoring a goal. They can only hope that the experience of playing at Wembley will help raise their game. Beating the Irons after the loss to Brighton in the FA Cup was a huge win.

Howe managed to get his strongest starting eleven on the pitch and the win will boost their confidence. His preferred 4-3-3 system will rely on the full backs, Trippier and Livramento to get the better of Mo Salah and Luis Diaz, as well as Murphy and Barnes supplying the chances for their potential matchwinner, Isak.
Newcastle United Injuries to Consider
It’s doubtful that Hall or Sven Botman will be available again this season following surgery and they’ll know how centre back Jamaal Lascelles has been feeling after his long-term injury. Anthony Gordon is suspended following his red card in the FA Cup tie against Brighton and the cup final will be the second of three games he’ll miss.
